Interior Grab Handles????

Pretty sure I need to install these on my lifted 54. Even with the additional power running board its a long way to the ground if my passenger or i should slip and fall. I have looked at all the images and could install them in the front pillars near the windsheild. My stumbling point is how to fasten them to the closed pillars and have them strong enough to withstand full weight pulls. Something like an expanding drywall anchor comes to mind. Someone must have done this already so comments welcomed.

Re: Interior Grab Handles????

I used a old cast aluminum handle and a couple of #12 sheet metal screws. This is on my '55 2nd. The front pillar is very strong and thick I found when drilling for the screws. I only put one on the passenger side as I use the steering wheel when I get in and out the drivers side. I have a very senior friend, that I take to lunch once and a while, and he really appreciates the grab handle. You could drill and tap 1/4-20 for even more strength, But the pull is mostly in shear and the #12 screws are more than adequate.

Re: Interior Grab Handles????

Looks good. You are correct as load is all shear entering or exiting cab. Passengers do say they wish they had something other than the armrests to hang onto to lesser the "shear terror" of my driving. (old engineers pun intended) Not sure as to the thickness of AD pillars. Some have suggested the use of "nutserts". Not sure its worth buying the tool for just 4 mount holes I am i also little concerned that on the ADs your face is may be at risk if the handles stick out too far or are rigid. Also thought about folding handle on the inside top of door opening but weather strip and thin metal there seems a dead end.

FWIW I think grabbing the wheel to get in may not be a good thing. I think My 87 tilt van column broke using it this way. A fix is shown in my build link.

Re: Interior Grab Handles????

Yes, my senior passenger has mentioned a handle on the dash would be helpful, but that is not going to happen on my truck anytime soon!

Re: Interior Grab Handles????

Please understand I have not done this but it looks to me like you need something similar to the plate used for shoulder belts in the AD trucks. Here is a link to show the plate.

http://www.julianos.com/Articles.asp?ID=277

There are several methods to get the plate located. Some have used a stick, a welding rod etc. Just google installing seat belts in AD trucks and you should find several examples. Clay

I realize the examples show the plate going in the back of the cab, but maybe you could figure out something to go in the front.

Probably ok with standard wheel, if you have a tilt it will break it and the fun begins tearing it apart for repair.
