Epoxy Paint VS. Automotive Paint. Please help

I bought a used Jet Ski trailer and want it to look good and stay looking good. I have sanded down all of the rust marks and used a martin senior etching primer on all of the bare metal. Tonight I am going to do a light sand and apply a coat of primer filler. I want to go buy some black finish paint now. So here comes my question, For a trailer that will be in and out of water what is better, epoxy paint or automotive? I can get a good deal on Martin Senior paints but want to use what ever is best for this application. Any advice would be appreciated.

Use POR-15! This is almost a ceramic coating. This will last and look the best for longer than any spayed paint.

To use the POR-15 you will have to remove all paint. It has to have bare metal to adhere and do it's job.

Have you considered shooting with an epoxy primer? Then you can use the MartinSR paint. The only thing I don't like about epoxy topcoat is that it doesn't polish. If you aren't super-critical about a high gloss, go with the black epoxy.

I would do por-15 but dont have a sand blaster to get all of the paint off. I do want to have a high gloss shine. should I shoot the epoxy primer over my primer etcher then use a Martin Senior paint to get the nice shine? What does the epoxy primer layer do for me?

Doesn't POR 15 have poor UV performance? A jet ski trailer is likely going to be sitting in the sun a lot.

Bare metal prepped with 80 grit...epoxy primer...single stage urethane paint...done.

Self Etching Primer is old technology.

Now if there are some rust issues, I grind/sand out most of it and then give the metal a wash of Prep and Prime which is a mild rust converter.
Rinse that off and then on to epoxy primer.

Yes, it needs to be topcoated for sun exposure.

POR-15 doesn't work well on bare metal....unless rusty.

Hammerite is nearly the same thing as POR-15. I have used it for over 10 years in the fence business shooting wrought iron panels and such and the stuff was exposed to all conditions from 100 plus degree days to freezing rain. We shoot it up here for all our frames and suspension parts which stay out in the weather until ready for use. It can be had in up to twenty colors and Parker Paints can order it or Home Depot.

POR-15 can be good, if you follow the instructions to the T.

I pulled my GM weight distributing hitch from the 2500HD, did a quick POR-15 job on it - didn't get all the paint off, didn't prep completely...and it rusted again in under a year.

Pulled it again, wire wheeled all the paint off, followed POR's instructions, then top coated. It's holding up much better this time around.

POR can be great, but you better plan on lots of time to get the metal prepped properly.
