electric fuel pump mounting location question
1970 truck. It has 2 tanks on it. I need to install an electric fuel pump. I saw the holley red pump is 7psi output. My question is where should I mount the pump? The fuel lines come out the top of the tank and run to a switch. Then a single line to the front. Can I install the pump on the single line and does it have to be below the tank, and/or do I have to have the fuel line come out of the bottom of the tanks?
I tried to upload some pics but didn't seem to work. So I'm trying a link. Sorry if that doesn't work. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...2_141203_1.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...2_140354_1.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...622_140959.jpg |

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
This is from holleys website..
Should be mounted below the fuel level of the tank for a good gravity feed on the inlet side. Relay kit P/N 12-753 recommended. These are to be used with 12 volt systems only. Mounting it between your switch valve and carb should be ok..as long as its below fuel level...I would have thought it would be ok mounted above the tank but holley says different... |

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
X2!!
But you gotta match your pump psi to your carb. Edelbrock carbs don't like more than 5 psi. Holleys or quadrajets will handle 7 psi. |

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
So that sounds like I have to set it up where the fuel line comes out the bottom of the tanks, through the switch into the pump. Instead of out the top likebit is. Should i put a filter right in front of the pump?
I have a Holley carb and an edelbrock I could use. |

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
Electric pumps push but don't pull well so you need to mount it close to the tank. And you don't need to draw from the bottom of the tank, just as long as your pump is placed below the tank level it'll work fine.

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
The suction line can still come from the top of the tank..the pump is what needs mounted below fuel level..and yes ,put a filter in front of the pump..keep the pump close to tank as possible
(just got outgeezered)...haha |

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
I don't know if you'd want a Holley red/blue/black pump in the engine bay. They are noisy as hell. Mount it as far away from the cab as practical or it will drive you nuts.

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
That mechanical pump is starting to sound better all the time. I don't think there would be a problem running the fuel line from the top of the tank to an electric pump close to and below the tank. That's easy on a car, sometime ground clearance is a concern on a truck if it ever goes off road. It does sound like a lot of work for minimal benefit.

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
I would like to keep the mechanical but I can't with the lt1. Is there another pump that isn't as loud and around the same price as the Holley?

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
OK, I have never played with LT1's. They run on 7 lbs fuel pressure? I have seen Camaros run electric pumps under the tank and they must get enough fuel; most likely for carbs. My 78 Seville actually had a small helper pump inside the tank to get the fuel to the high pressure pump outside the gas tank. I guess GM didn't think the high pressure pump could pull it by itself reliably.

Re: electric fuel pump mounting location question
Yeah this ones a carb conversion I'm trying to finish. It's what came with the truck when I got it. Had an edelbrock carb on it and I have a spare Holley if I need it. I bought the Holley blue pump with regulator and a gauge. Will see what happens when I get the engine back in the truck.
