I have had this problem for a long time now and cannot pinpoint where the sound is coming from. It sounds like an ambulance siren only not as loud. It only makes the sound after I have driven it maybe 10 miles, like it has to get warmed up first. Could it be an axle bearing? Do they go bad often? It's a posi rearend if that helps. Please help me with this. It is embarrasing.

Are the springs that go around the drum in place?
(does a '72 have them at all??)

Bearings don't usually sound like a siren. They will rumble, or growl. The sound you describe makes me think it is your ring and pinion gears. Does the sound go away when you let off the gas and coast? During a hard acceleration? Only at cruising speeds? When it makes the sound will help determine what is worn or out of adjustment. I read about this but really don't remember all the details. It had to do with the lash of the pinion gear to the ring gear.

A friends truck has a high pitch whine and it turned out to be a pitted ring gear. His truck is from AZ. It had sat for several years, probably in a hot shed. All the lube eventually came off and the exposed top half of the ring gear and it started to rust. All those little rust pits make that rearend sing. And I don't mean pfffft!

The drums on mine do not have any springs around them. The noise only starts up after I get up to around 15 mph. It does not matter if I am on the gas or coasting. Only after reaching a certain speed. It is not a constant whine but more like a pulsing sound. I have never messed with the posi rear but I will open it up and see what it looks like.
