Starter/HEI help please!
hey guys--posted a question a while back that I was having intermittent starting problems, was thinking it was the solenoid. It seemed to not start only when the engine was still hot. Wouldn't try to turn over, nothing. Let it sit for a while, started up fine.
Well, I just remembered that in my 76 I had a similar problem, and a friend told me it was the HEI, and to replace the dizzy cap/rotor/coil, and that fixed the problem. Any ideas?? Starter or HEI??? Not that keen on electrical systems, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks! RainDog

I had that problem in a 64 Belair that had a 455 Pontiac in it,and that starter was real close to the 2 1/2" exhaust,if i drove and shut it off,i had to wait for it to cool.it was the starter sylenoid,put in a new HD one never happened again

If it only does this when th motor is hot, 99% chance of it being the starter.
Do you have headers? ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. If you had a HEI problem,,it would still crank over. My guess is starter/selnoid problem.

Sounds like starter. Try a starter heat sheild.

just had the same problem, went to autozone and picked up a solenoid for about $11. also might want to check the brushes in the starter, I got them for about $1.50. But if ya don't want to tear the starter apart, a rebuilt lifetime warranty one was about $35.
Might also want to check your battery, I have found that these starters like a lot of current, so you need one with at least 600 cca, but one with 650+ cca would be better. Im not a mechanic by no means. Had same problem w/a 72 chevy wagon, 350 4bbl. Everytime I took a long trip (engine hot) starter wouldn't go. Smoke a cig or 2 off we went. Fix was a HD starter. The 'normal' ones wont do. Never tried a shield tho.

I had the same problem w/ my '70 350 and it was the starter/ solenoid. I replaced my '73 starter w/ a '76 (I learned that was a heavier-duty starter) and haven't had a problem since. I don't run HEI, but I wouldn't think that would be the problem.
