My gas gauge just stopped working!!! It has been working great, now it's reading about 1/8th of a tank, and I just put $20 in last night. I'm thinking there's no way I went through it that quick, but to be sure I put another $20 in just now and it overflowed! So I know my tank is full but the damn gauge is floating around 1/8 still, wtfffff.

Went to put my rear shoes on last night, got the drivers side completely blown apart only to find out that they sold me the wrong ones. Way too wide. Haha, so I put everything back together. My boy comes up and asks why I'm putting the old stuff back on, I told him that's part of wrenching lmao.



I also pressure washed the engine to chase down some oil leaks. I'm using the original valve covers so I assumed the mating surfaces were probably monked up/bent/deformed and leaking onto the manifolds. (SMOKEY BIOTCH) Well, what I found was not something I expected:





These things have become so thin that the sides were actually pulsating when the engine is running, eventually rubbing on the rockers and wearing holes in them. Crazy! So I guess the good news is I found most or all of my leaks. Bad news I can't use these badass original valve covers!!!

I have a set of original valve covers at the house. If you're interested, I'll pull them off the shelf and shoot some pics of them for you. They would be CHEAP to a fellow board member

Ed I'm still debating on what I want to do. I have some M/T aluminum ones I could use but they just don't fit the theme/look of the truck. Another option would be some gaudy ass chrome ones but ehhhh. I'll let ya know, but I'm thinking I'll have it figured out by this afternoon cause I need to drive it.

You're right, either will "work." My $0.02 => Don't put anything with a brand name on it, unless it says Chevrolet in an old school style. But that's my taste for the overall appearance of your truck. Obviously you're free to do whatever you want. So go with whatever YOU like.

Would you leave the covers black or paint them to match the engine?

Mike, your float probably has a pin hole in it allowing fuel to weigh it down causing the false fuel level reading.

Wayne the damn thing started working again yesterday, then stopped working by last night. It's definitely a short, I just have to find it.

For $25 I'm happy they look very similar to stock ones. I have some model paint that is close to the color of the truck, I was thinking about letting my kids go to town on the valve covers, but, I wanted to get em on haha so plain black they stayed. They fit good and no more leaky leak, well, maybe still from the oil pan but I'm not messin with that yet.

No, I sure haven't. I installed a hidden stereo instead, that way I don't have to listen to the noise it's making.

HA, no seriously, I haven't gotten under it yet. Thanks for bringing it up, I REALLY need to. I will get under this weekend at the latest and post my findings.

Oh crap it just occurred to me that the noise you are hearing might be the yoke bottoming out inside the tail shaft and if that's the case that is not good!
Lets keep in mind that it is less likely than a broken or missing transmission mount but not impossible.
What ever the case is you probably shouldn't drive it until you figure it out.

This is gonna be a confusing post, lol.

When I have it lower than that, or aired out, it's a particular sweet spot in the throttle that will make the noise show up. If I'm coasting in gear no throttle, it wont do it. If I BARELY put a little foot on the throttle it will do it. If I give it more throttle, like to stay at speed, it wont do it either.

If I take it out of gear and coast it will do it.

This is all while aired out or close to it. If I lift it up, I can't get it to do it at all.

Hmm yeah something is definitely still loose under there, I guess we will just have to wait to find out what it is when you get under there and investigate.
My vote is still a bad or missing transmission mount.
Just make sure when you look at it that the air ride is at a level where the noise happens.
