Mobile trash smasher (open dumpster)

Have any of you guys seen this?
These guys came to the shop a couple of months ago giving "free samples" as a promotion for their business. This big truck smashes down the trash about 50% or so, depending on what you throw in it and how it is stacked.
We have been separating cardboard and recycling it for quite some time, so most of what we do throw out is wood off-cuts, stretch wrap, plastic/metal strapping and the occasional broken pallet.
This thing compacts that stuff pretty well. The rollers are not just rolling, they are hydraulically powered too. It costs about 25% of the cost of swapping in a new dumpster, so it saves more than enough to pay for the service.
I had never seen or heard of such a thing, until it showed up one day. Today I remembered to take a few pics.

Okay for light stuff ... when we rented a big dumpster they specifically told us that if it was too heavy there would be extra fees.

Worse they told us that it would be our responsibility to unload it back to maximum weight, which would have been a hell of a deal after we were hundreds of miles away!

Re: Mobile trash smasher (open dumpster)

There's a local large commercial glass company here that ships commercial glass from West VA to Knoxville in large 12' x 10' / 12' x 12' crates using 2"x8" / 2"x 10" and 2" x 12" # 1 pine crates . They are happy to give away all the boards otherwise they go in the dumpster . I've used multiple loads for concrete forms and the such . With the price of lumber right now I need to go load up a few more times .

A person could build a nice house with that stuff. If it's free, who cares if the studs are extra deep? There's more room for insulation! I should check around here for a deal like that!

The company who handles our dumpsters has been with us for more than 10 years. They used to be next door to us in the old location, so we know them pretty well. They have never cared about weight, just volume. The drivers complain if stuff sticks out too much, because it is too hard for them to get the tarp over it. There is a law here about covering the load in open trucks like that. Smashing it down with this device not only compacts the stuff, but spreads it out better too. We can't access the open top quite as easily as we could before, so it gets loaded heavier toward the building. So it's a win for everyone, at least in this specific case.

That looks like it would work great for cars that are illegally parked in handicapped spots...
