4x4 tires

Hi all,,,

I'm looking for tall slim 4x4 tires for my 71 K20. Need tires badly and want to spend the money right!!!

It is stock height I believe. Not sure what size would fit. I like the tall thin look, but not seriously lifted tall, just enough over stock to fit the tires nicely. Would like tires that would fit and if I need to do a lift I can do it later.

Would like an aggressive tread look but also a radial road tire that rides very nice.

Price is an issue, but I'm not a cheapo. If the tires are worth it I'll pay.

Would like to use stockish steel rims for a factoryish look.

What are the ideas???

Thanks...

I don't think my truck is stock height, but I don't have a lift kit. The PO may have a homemade body lift...

Anyway, I also am a fan of a tall but skinny tire, and BGF was the only 33X10.5 I could find in both the AT & MT. since I will see a fair amount of highway travel, I bowed out, and went with the AT's, and love them

I think there is also a Thornbird? tire that size, but I've heard they wear quicker than the BFG's

Here's what she looks like with em, sorry don't have a good front shot yet...

Try 255/75R16 tires, BFGs all terrain or mud terrain, 7" wide rim and are about 32" tall.

Welcome to the board!

Thanks a ton,,,

The pics are just about the look I am shooting for. A taller tire would be really cool. Any idea what the tallest tire that would fit on a stock hieght is???

Thanks...

I have Goodyear MT/Rs. 265/75/16. Them come out to be 31.8 on a 7-8 in rim. 235/85/16 come out to about the same height but a 6-7in rim.

Here is BFG's sizes:http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/asset...rain_ta_kd.pdf

for the tall skinny look i would say go with 235/85/16. they are supposed to be about 33 inches tall on a 6 inch wide rim from what ive heard (popular dually tire size-- skinny wheels) i have 285/75/16s on my 71 k20. but they are more of a wide decent height tire. the 265/75/16 is also a skinny tall tire on a 7" wide rim.

in these pics-- one on the left is with no lift and 265/75/16 Mud Kings on 16x7 whitespokes, pic on the right is 2 inch front lift and 285/75/16 Buckshot Maxxix Mudders on the same 16x7 whitespoke rims. bottom pic is a couple weeks ago with the same 285/75s

These are 9.00/16 Power Kings on 72 K-5 and 86 K-10 ones on K-5 were on my dads 84 K-10 for 5 or 6 years. Ones on the K-10 have a pile of miles and this makes the third truck they have been on in 4 years.
Both have stock suspension and no mods to fenders.

Just FYI, 255/85R16 can be had in a number of good options. BFG makes a MT, I believe Cooper makes a nice AT in that size. There are others, but the selection is not huge.

That size runs 33 to 34" actual diameter. I love 'em as winter tires. Tall and narrow. Can you get them on at stock height? I don't know. They're tall, but a tall narrow tire is a lot easier to fit than a tall wide tire.

Do yourself a favor and skip the Thornbirds. I have yet to see a favorable report on them.

www.tyres1.com sells a General Grabber MT in a 235/85-16 for $105. I have General Grabbers MT's in a 35/12.50-16.5 and they are an awesome tire. I don't have many miles on them because they are on my old '79 that doesn't get drove very much, so I can't give a milage/tread wear report.

I'm not sure about what size will fit your truck, but I have BFG Mud Terrains on my '98 Z-71 and they are super. They are pricey, but they are worth the money. I'm pretty sure 32's will fit.

Jim,
Those are Power King Super Traction LT. The tire size is 7.50-16LT. The outside diameter is 32-33 inch. These are bias tires and cost about $100 each. I bought them at Discount Tire.

235/75 R15s on my K10 must be stock height because the speedo, when checked against a GPS, is right on.
I'll look for a picture...

BARRAZA, How much lift? I like the looks of that. I was thinking of the 9.00-16s but hell might as well go with the 11.00-16s myself!

I did a search on All Terrain tires and this looked like a good spot to post. I just bought a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers for the work truck. LT285/75R16D1's for 121.99 each at Discount tire. I have it in the shop right now getting an alignment and brake job. Once I get it out this afternoon I'll post some pics. I was running Goodyear Wranglers (265's) and got around 35,000 miles out of them. They handled well on the highway (which I get a lot of windshield time) and did good offroad. I was looking at moving to the Goodrich but, they didn't have any 285's in stock and I wanted to see if the meat would fit under the fender. They showed me the Nitto's and they looked like they had a good tread pattern.
We'll see how they do. I'm heading up to the north Louisiana area next week so, I might get a chance to see how they do in the mush. I know east Texas was REAL mushy this week. That's why a came back and bought some new shoes
