Wiring a kill switch

I've tried to search this out but no one gives a complete wiring description for a kill switch for an electric fuel pump. The switch I bought has two prongs on the back. I connected a positive wire to one then tapped into the positive wire on the fuel pump. Then I connected a negative wire to one and grounded it. But it didn't kill the fuel pump when I turned the ignition key to "ON". Also I put in a 20 amp inline fuse and the switch I'm using is a 10 amp. Any ideas on this? Is it hooked up wrong?

I think your switch needs to be in the middle of the circuit not at the begining or the end. It must just be a "stop" in the line. Not a starting point or an ending point.

Re: Wiring a kill switch

Ok all you ned to do is put the switch somewhere in between the positive and the pump, no need to ground the switch. if you ground it (other than if it is one with a light) your going to burn the switch, and if your lucky thats all......

Like this + ------------ switch ---------------- fuel pump positive connection

Yes like that above. The switch opens and closes the circuit.

Is there a realy in your circuit too somewhere?
If so, then you need the switch in the relay circuit.
If no... then you really should.

Re: Wiring a kill switch

So what about the extra pin on the back? Is it of no use?

Re: Wiring a kill switch

I did the above, just running the switch on the positive wire, and nada. Do I need to run an alternate power source to the switch (like to the fuse box)?

Re: Wiring a kill switch

The best place to do this would be right at the fuel pump. Connect the original wire that goes the the positive of the fuel pump to one pin on the switch. Connect the other pin of the switch to the positive connection on the fuel pump. This will allow the switch to turn the pump on and off. Make sure you tape up any of the bare connections.

Re: Wiring a kill switch

I just put a switch on the dash of my 72 Jimmy last month. I have a blue Holley pump. I put the switch IN LINE of your hot wire. NO ground is necessary. Holley only called for a 7 amp inline fuse. 20 amp could be to high.

Re: Wiring a kill switch

So I should use a lower amp inline fuse? Also, should the fuse go in between the power source and the switch or in between the switch and the pump?

Re: Wiring a kill switch

As close to the power source as possible, that way it protects the wire, the switch and the pump.
