Project "Homewrecker" has begun - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My buddy Jim and I purchased this 70 GMC wrecker right here in NJ from a local body shop. The truck has only had 2 owners before us and is currently showing just a tick over 17,000 miles on the odometer. We believe this to be true and accurate as the title states the same. She needs alot of work but did run and move under her own power when we brought her home.
She's sporting a small block 350 with a 4 speed stick along with a beefy 1 ton suspension.
Options are pretty sparse but she does have a padded dash, custom package, am radio, heavy duty alternator and radiator.
Plans are for a full restoration back to her former glory with a small twist. You see, we have a buddy with a 69 Charger General Lee and a 75 Plymouth Fury 4 door police car. We plan to turn this old girl into a Hazzard County Garage tow truck sporting Cooter's favorite red, white and blue paint scheme to compliment his display at car shows.

We expect it to be mostly a show truck to compliment the General Lee. It may see occasional tow duty but not much. We consider her retired

Well, we got the cab off the chassis and removed the last of the under hood wiring. Also removed the exhaust after the ram's horns.
We fabricated a new mount for the center carrier bearing as this section was rotted beyond repair. It's not the prettiest looking thing but it is rock solid and should work just fine.

The General actually belongs to a good friend of mine. Other than paint, he built the whole car himself from a stock triple black R/T.

Just a few updates.....Motor is now out and is in need of some attention. Seems it has a bent pushrod and atleast 1 sticky lifter. Not sure how much more damage but it will all be fixed in due time.
The metal work on the cab continues as I have repaired both bottom corners of the cowl so far. Next up is the driver side rear floor support and then it's cab corners and rockers.
While I concentrate on the cab, Jim will be working on getting the rest of the chassis stripped and ready for paint.
All the suspension, steering and brake parts have been ordered and we await their arrival...

Well, Jim and I finally got all the correct parts for the front suspension, steering and brakes. That was a major undertaking in and of itself lol. Seems many suppliers do not know the difference between a 1/2 ton and a 1 ton truck. We finally got the truck back on it's own front tires this past weekend.
We also just got a complete inline tube stainless brake line set by way of Fedex yesterday along with the correct factory replacement clips. This will be installed in the coming weeks.
Then it's on to rebuilding the 350 motor and reinstalling it along with a new clutch setup for the 4 speed.
