Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

you can do it by either screwing in or out the adjusting bolts on the bottom. turn both sides the same amount of turns to keep it level. or by doing a suspension swap and adding drop springs and spindles. or air ride

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

They do make 60-62 drop spindles for the torsion bar frames.

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

You may want to check out "Belair Tim" on Ebay...he handles these spindles and they are USA built by McGaughy's...very high quality built in Fresno California and they will take care of the disc brake conversion for the front as well...

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

Best drop spindle for the money are from McGaughy's. I have installed some of the generic spindles on customer cars and trucks and they suck big time. Generally the cheaper spindles need work to make them perform the way they should. Such as - grinding the control arms for clearance, grinding the spindles for clearance, changing tie rod ends to get enough room for adjustment.
I have used several McGaughy kits and get the best fit and turning radius without any problems.

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

If you want McGaughy's, PM me and I will give you Tim's cell phone number. He's also the manager for McGaughy's manufacturing here in Fresno. He has an EBAY site which is how I first found him...

I think I paid about $525 for the drop spindles with disc brakes conversion...they were all built in Fresno...he even installed the whole set up for me out of his own shop in Madera. Very nice guy...

Have you installed them on T-bar trucks?
Looking to see how they do on the turning radius, and fender clearance.

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

I just made a set of dropped torsion keys for my buddy's 61 'Burb. After a little extra clearancing up front and relocating the shocks, the ride is outstanding and the keys aren't dragging on the ground.

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

Brad,
My 61 has the t-bars. I don't think the turning radius changed...the 15 inch wheels I had on there previous will have to be changed as the end of the tie rod only has about 1/4" clearance. That was the only issue.

I just wanted to give a Kudo's to McGaughy's out of Fresno...all american built right here and 55BelairTim who sold them to me, refused to use anything but American parts on anything he did during the install. Cost a few bucks more...but he obviously took pride in what he did.

I was treated fairly...

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

I have been looking for torsion keys for my 62 like the ones WCHLVR has made. Does anyone know if anyone makes them, and if not, what are the rules about seeing if WCHLVR could make me a pair.
Sorry I don't know how to respond to WCHLVR's post directly, so hopefully he or someone can help me out with my question.

What do you plan on doing with the torsion bar keys?
I'm trying to design a key that provides different drop heights, but I need a loose key to get my measurements off of.

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

Mine are still in, for now but I will see if Tuckers got some in the bone yard. Like everyone else they have been scraping these front ends. I have some more parts to gather up before I tear down. I have to make some room for this. I plan on cab off but it might have to wait.

Re: Best way to lower torsion front suspension?

I would get the drop spindles and then start using the torsion bars to lower it. It will give you a better idea of how low you want it.

Too late, way past this. If you poke around there is a shot of mine next to one with drop spindles. Lost My 65 the last ones are gone but if not in a hurry mine will be off soon. Vacation checks and Turbine work soon, so I can spend it all on the mistress.
