Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

I need help! The only outside emblem, I left was the CHEVROLET Letter on the hood. Unfortunately the holes seem smaller or missing do to possible bondo and body work. Can anyone give me any pointers or a template to ensure correct placement on the letters. I know I may have to put tape on the holes and re drill them. The question I have, does all the letters come with 2 holes? I searched the forum, but no luck...

Can't really answer your question right. However, if that was a bondo job, you might be able to grind off the bondo from the back side and find the original holes? Easy to prime and paint the inside compared to the outside.
Like you said use tape, and I'd put it on before grinding bondo and be careful not to make a lot of heat.

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

Sorry for not being more clear. The truck is actually painted now. I'm trying not to ruin my paint. You can see the holes but the pegs don't fit in them and some seem to have two holes for each letter and others only show one hole for each letter which is strange because all the letters have 2 pegs.

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

Normally, the assembly manual shows emblem and molding locations and hole spacing. Unfortunately, I don't have mine here to check. Perhaps someone can check and post a picture for you.

In the meantime check post 12 here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=329097

EDIT: OK, I admit I am not familiar with the letters, but the pictures in the old for sale thread below seem to show only one stud per letter that take a speed nut. The other studs seem to be smaller and only serve to keep the letters properly positioned.

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

Two holes per letter, one is alignment post the other accepts a speed nut. The large hole is always on the left, small on the right. A quick check with my calipers on an original hood with one re-spray I got .150" for the large and .130" for the small. Here's the hood I checked.

Dan,

Could you make me a template? Lined to the bottom of the hood and send it to me? I'd pay for the postage.

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

Your best bet is to access the holes from the back of the hood

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

Are you getting a template? I have a hood with the letters off. Might can help you with that if you cant get that from someone else. Good luck.

A guy said he would send me one. I'm sure he will. Maybe just got side tracked. If he doesn't, I will be sure to take you up on your offer! Thanks a lot!

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

I saw on your build that BOOSTED said he would make a template so I figured you were taken care of. If you still need I can make something up this weekend. Let us know if you get, or still need something. Later

Thanks!

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

A bit slow and somewhat hyper anal...... here is what I have accomplished so far. This is much more involved than it seems.

First step, I measured the angle of the hood lip and sheared a couple pieces of steel and formed a short flange to hold the distance from the lip of the hood.

I clamped two pieces in place and started marking holes with a scribe.

I then scribed a line on the hood just to get a visual of how/if the holes were in line with each other.
You can see here that the O L E and T screw stud hole are all aligned. easy peezy

BUT... the C H E V R are not, why make it easy....

(Note, if you are like me and leave your pristine hood outside in windy Oklahoma the tip will end up damaged like this one...)

SO here we are all marked up for the mounting stud holes. Now I will take these to work Monday and punch the holes then mount to the hood with machine screws. I will then have to use an angled scribe to mark the alignment pin holes since they do not have an access hole like the mounting stud.

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

Wow bro! I figured you just take some sheet of paper and make the marks lined on the angle of the nose. I had no idea you would get that detailed. I gotta give you something for your time and effort.

Re: Question about CHEVROLET hood letters

No prob. I finished these templates and since I see you have at least the "R" you can use those holes and the hood edge to mark the rest. The only catch is I need you to send these back so I can make a one piece template from them. Just PM me a name/address.
