Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

rocker arm was ruined as you can see and the push rod was bent. Stud looks fine I havent gone futher than the valve cover being off I drive it daily and can't afford to tear into the motor so I'm going to replace the parts I have that are damaged that I can see and try and tighten these rockers as best as I can. I'm no genius when it comes to motors though

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

I imagine it was running rough and ticking? Should be able to replace those parts and hopefully be good.

All good walking to the lazy gfs house to use her car. And not an LSX just a simple ls3 that looks carbureted. I don't have Leon money ;)

Do you need to adjust them all or just the one?

All just for safe measure postponed till tmrw I just have way too little knowledge to ruin this motor

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Well first let me start by saying that push rods don't just do that. There has got to be a reason. If you remember my build, I had the exact same issue at the Brothers show and shine. Mine was the exhaust valve so the fuel would get in but could not get out and was back firing through the carb. Yours must be on the intake side and no fuel can get into that cylinder. It might run a little rough on 7 cylinders but the big issue is WHY?

Mine was a flat cam shaft that could not maintain valve spring pressure. The shreaded lobes were distributed throughout my entire engine and it had to be rebuilt.

If you do not want to tear it apart then you will need to get a long rod and insert it through the push rod hole and on top of the lifter. Then rotate the engine once and measure the lift. You will need to know the specs of your cam to know how much it should be lifting. Remember that this is going to only be an approximation because the hydraulic lifters change size when there is oil pressure. Mine were almost round so there was very little lift if any.

Also check your oil for metal shavings with a magnet.

Either way a bent rod is evidence of a far worse issue.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

You bring up a good point Mike

NewType72 02-10-2013 01:04 AM

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

very valid points Mike and very helpful insight my current motor tuner and I deduced that the rocker arm simply failed and the way it fell led to bend the push rod.

I went ahead and made sure I found all metal chippings on the top of the head and double checked both sides adjustment looks like I'll need to have him do it one more time it puffin a lil smoke right now but it could be just cold out tonight.

got the new rocker on and had him adjust it correctly since we had to replace cylinder 2's rocker arm's completely since they were loose or fell like this one did.

Went ahead and clean her all up put her together and ran her around a little bit tonight I may do a longer run tomorrow sometime and use the sea foam treatment in the gas tank see if she'll run a tick better (I know it doesnt have anything to do with the valves but it was a treatment i wanted to try )

So final conclusion she runs and I hate that she was even down for 24 hours

Try being without for 3 days while the tranny shop drives her by your window at work :lol:
Hopefully that all that was the matter and she is good to go.

No way?! I would have some words with that shop owner!

Well lets hope that that is all it was, hate to see an engine fail because of this. Get a mag plug for your oil drain plug.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Well it's first show of the year week and it starts early so Thursday is my 2013 biggest show schedule I've done so far tour lol. So the Sacramento Autorama is my destination this weekend via invite by the great group over at Arc Audio can't thank them enough for the support of me and this truck. I'm no showstopper yet but I am very proud to have this truck among the beautiful cara that I will be joining this weekend so I'm pretty darn stoked about that. So now it's checklist time to be prepared.

Motor: Decent no major oil leaks has small lower rad hose leak though shouldn't be too bad
Tranny: Solid but messy
Rear end: Solid
Suspension: Has that Chevy lean but oh we'll bags in future maybe
Paint: Needs a good hand polish this week before the show will do that Wednesday night
Wheels: ^^ Same except Tuesday
Interior: Vaccum and shine Wednesday night
Needs a display rug: to go underneath the truck at show.
Door panel inserts: Should be dry and installed today with newly polished trim ring/pics tonight
Purchasing a bunch of microfiber cloths to use for drying and cleaning
Purchasing more cleaners for truck
Polish the front window trim to restore its shine (original and beat to hell)
Tighten any loose bolts in bed
Reglue trim rings on deluxe marker lights (repop junk)
Waiting for inner grill to be painted so I can re install and finish the front end
Waiting for tail gate to hopefully at least have bodywork done and white sealer applied possibly red to match

May add others as I go but there's the big ticket items so far that need to be done by Wednesday night gotta love crunch time

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Well as we speak my inner grille is drying from the silver being laid down hoping to have it tmrw night for assembly.

Also the inside of the tailgate is getting a little love on the ding of a trailer that backed into my lowered tailgate at the time so hoping shell be nice and straight. Primer to be laid tonight. and hopefully some sealer tmrw night if all work out well. then assembly either Wednesday night or early Thursday morning on the way to the show nailbitter I know but I have faith in my father and he always pulls through for me so I gotta love him for that.

Door panel inserts turned out like poopy so I'm respraying them one last time before I give up on them to look good.

Grabbed up some metal polish and new bulbs for my dash going to run 194's since they run MUCH brighter than my tired old 168's and they WON'T burn up anything and just sitting here polishing away now getting really excited :D

NewType72 02-12-2013 03:16 AM

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Rephrase that about the bulbs in my dash I'll be running 168's instead of 194's got em mixed up a bit..

Good news from my father the tailgate got it's last skim coat and is in primer tonight with good progress he should have it in white sealer by tmrw at lunch time. He also sprayed down the silver mettalic to my inner grille that I'll pick up tmrw to finish my grille install when I drop off the Red centari for a hopeful last minute spray that night. We'll see how it all goes tomorrow will be very busy it seems.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

With all this stuff going on, we need some pics :D The engine still running ok?

NewType72 02-12-2013 11:05 AM

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Most of what's going on where I'm at isn't pic worthy shoo this may be my first page without pictures  but I should be able to get some paint progress pictures tonight when I grab up my inner grille.

Motor is fine so far not tryin to stress it any till after the weekend

So I gather you'll be displaying in the Arc Audio Building? If so I'll be looking for your truck

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

A mag plug is a magnetic oil plug, if there was damaged parts or shavings that got into your oil the magnet will hold onto them until the next oil change.

The Anglia usually gets displayed anymore (not raced) ie Hot August Nights and sometimes Autorama. If you don't know James you'll probly figure out who he is during set up. He's a short little guy and everything they have is bright red.
