Someone in Grandma's family back in California opened a burger joint that eventually became the In n Out Burgers chain. Yeah.....my wife's cousins are multi-millionaires!

I've met some of them when they came to Arkansas for Grandma's funeral a few years back. Nice people. We're trying to get them to open one in Arkansas, but so far they say that its just not doable. I, personally, have never had an In n Out Burger, but I've always heard they were good. I'm a Whataburger guy, myself.

Cool story , thanx for sharing

Great thread idea Eric.

I love living in the central valley. Most don’t… But it’s a country lifestyle. 2 hours from the beach or Yosemite. Far enough away from any big cities. Just enough delta breeze to cool down in the evenings.

I grew up in norcal, but Turlock will be “home” to my kids. I’ve traveled most of this VERY big state, and there is certainly a lot to admire!

PS - random side note… I’ve lived here 40 years and never once heard a Californian refer to it as “Cali”.

I feel the same about California as I do Maryland, lots to love, things to dislike, plenty to enjoy if you choose to see it. A lot of people leave my state for many of the same reasons, and more keep pouring in.

One thing I do know is bad news travels far and wide and that's what people from afar hear. Many form an opinion on that hearsay knowing nothing more about anything else.

I'm out of time for all the things I like about California. I'll edit back in this evening

Everybody's gotta know somebody who is kinda famous (or infamous). Not related to the California thread, but my father's grandmother (Edna Roxanna James) was born in the 1870's and came to Arkansas from Missouri. Her father, Robert James, was a cousin to Frank & Jesse James. They do not believe that he ever rode with them in any of their exploits. Edna died in 1974 at the age of 96. I remember her, my great-grandmother. She wrote poetry and was hard of hearing. Would like to talk with her today about the things she knew.....

I don't mean to bust a thread but, it is said that the James boys are in my ancestry, as well. On my Father's side to their mother's side.

On my mother's side, my Great Grandmother (Rose) was a ''Lady In Waiting'' to the Czarina Of Russia. She escaped to the US before the Bolsheviks did their thing.

My Dad was born in Texas but, I was born at the Coronado Naval Air Station in San Diego. Returned to Texas when I was a few months old. California born but, a Texas Native...LOL!

California is as geographically diverse, as Texas is. I am always in awe of California's landscape. But, I have worked, lived or played in 49 states and they all have wonderful views...if you just take the time to see them.

One a side note: We have In & Outs here in the DFW area. I have (2) within less than 15 minutes from me and they are always packed. They are good but, sorry, I don't see the magic.

Eric - I hope you don't mind me putting a link to my California vacation thread from this past June, but the beauty of the pictures say a lot for CA. We encountered friendly people and great scenery throughout our trip.

Over the past thirty years or so I've travel around most of the states on my Sportster. I've found that people in small towns and rural areas all seem to be friendly and pleasant whether it be California, New York, or wherever. Nothing against city folks, I just haven't spent a lot of time there.

Re: The ‘Positive’ California ‘Thread’

My paycheck is double what it would be in another state. About 10 years I was a commercial building engineer working at Washington Mutual Bank. When they went bankrupt the buildings I worked at shut down. I received my 30 day notice and started looking for a job. The company I was working for transferred operations to Texas. The new manager called me and offered me a mobile technician job for less than half of what I was making without retirement benefits. I told him I appreciate the offer but could not take a job for such low pay. He called back and offered me another $5 and told me that was more than they were paying employees in Texas. I declined and found a job 2 weeks later at a site 5 minutes away from my house. My current job pays great and include a retirement pension and annuity. By the time I retire my house will be worth a fortune and I will collect more in retirement than I make now. BBQ must be good in the Lone Star State cuz they work for beans.

We enjoy cruising the wine country, love our deserts, anywhere on 395. Our trees and water in our "back yard" are a plus! ;)

I've not been to every state in the nation but I have been to quite a few. What I have found is if you get far enough away from the large, urban areas (NYC, LA, Atlanta, etc.) you will find people pretty much the same. May talk a little different and have a few quirks that are different but pretty well the same as everyone else in a more country setting.

I spent a month in upstate New York back in 2008, the Illion/Utica area. Made some good friends, loved the area, and would go back if I got the chance. Spent a week at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland taking a graduate course one summer and loved the Eastern Shore area.

For an Arky hillbilly I've managed to get around a bit and broaden my perspective. I've learned the south doesn't have the market cornered on ignorant rednecks and the stereotype of a typical Arkansan still holds in a lot of places with people who don't seem to know much about anything other than where they are from.

California is absolutely gorgeous and if I'd just spent months in a wagon to get there I'd think I was in heaven. All places that nice eventually draw enough people to have issues. No way around it. The prices of everything does offset the increased wages though. I've found the closer you get to either coast everything is 1.5-2x as expensive. I am blessed to be where I get to enjoy lower cost of living while having a job that pays me multiples of the state average income. I might make more other places but I'd spend it living there.

The framers of our country very well understood states would be very different and remain that way forever. That is why states rights were held in such high regard. I'll not go any further into politics than that.
