Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

I didn't really get anything done on the Suburban today other than pulling parts off so I can do rust repair, but I did get an itch to do some concept sketches. I am leaning towards #3 or #4, not sure yet. Input?

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

I appreciate the input on the paint schemes! Thanks!

I keep forgetting about a problem I noticed when I started looking the truck over real good for the first time. The headers don't really fit without clearance in the frame. The headers are dynomax, I was planning on keeping them, I just dont like the idea of a cut frame! Anyone else run into this issue?

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

I have been working on re-gearing the axles. The front has a PowerLok. maybe I will keep it, I don't know yet, it is still an agressive diff for the front. I can re-use both of the diffs if I want. They are both series 3 carriers. The rear has "thick-ring" 4.88 and the front uses a spacer.

Update: got some time between work and drills to spend some time on the Burb. It's the point of no return!

I like #3, especially since that's how I painted mine, :D. Good news for you, Mar-K out of Oklahoma city now makes the correct length upper trim for the suburban (I should have pictures in a week or so). Also, Rokcrwln has a good write up on making the 4th door here: http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...=188993&page=3.

:agree:

Rokcrln's 4th door got me going. I wish mine had less rust like yours.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

I really need to get a hitch for the White Burb! I was supposed to go get the parts cab this week. I ran into a problem on the way up the hill though. The Yukon just rolled over 200K a week ago and finally said that's it! I'm tired!

Or maybe she was jealous that she got kicked out of the garrage every time I worked on the Burb. Whatever the case, the garrage is full, and I have no way to go get my cab at the moment!!! Maybe I will replace the 3rd gear synchro while I have the engine out...

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

BAD DAY!!!!!!!

I am pulling all the glass so I can do rust repair and don't do any dammage with the grinder or welder... This is the first windshield I split durring removal. On the plus side, once it was cracked, the size 13 sandal made removal a snap! I still upset about making a stupid mistake (check inside trim for silicone!!!!)

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TC...0/DSCN0769.JPG

I did have water in my windshield trim...

my rust issues aren't very bad in the windshield frame... that's a plus!

There was some sealer, just not enough.

Oh man nice ride! Our 02 Burby is nice, but that is the cat's @**! Good luck on your build, and nice Silverado you had. Details on the kit for the SFA would be cool, or did you built that?

No, I used the ORU kit... I was in a hurry to get done with the project! If I did it again, I would have built everything myself. I built the axles myself though. The front springs are 4 inch from a 73-87 chevy truck, and the rears are 8 inch custom made... I wish I could remember the name of the place I got them made. They cost me $100 per inch which is a real good price

I need to remove all pictures of that truck... I really really really really miss that truck!!!!!

That, or I need to get the Burb done FAST

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

Well most of us probably enjoy the pics and would like more, so you better just get the burb done to enjoy a tuff 4x4 again.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

Well it has been a while since I have had any time to work on my truck, especially with the Yukon down. I did get back to California for my Sister-in-law's wedding. My wife took pictures of family... I took pictures of my brothers 70 Chevy and 68 parts truck... After this weekend I should be back in the garrage for a few days, I have some work to get done on the Burb!!!!

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TJ...0/DSCN0869.JPG

I found another issue with the frame... it is fixable if I keep this frame.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TJ...0/DSCN0862.JPG

I am waiting on machine work to get done on the block for the Yukon, so I had some time to spend on the body of the Burb. I started by checking the cancer on the drivers side floor. I knocked several holes through the metal with my wire wheel. On the passenger side there is a screwed-down patch that was hiding under caulk and insulation. So along with the 4th door the Burb is gonna get a whole new floor and rockers...

Then my distraction woke up...

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TJ...helper%203.jpg

I am really procrastinating getting my welder working... I need to get the body braced before I cut anything out.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

Ok, so I know this is probably no big deal to most, but I am real excited...

I HAVE POWER IN THE GARRAGE FOR THE WELDER!!!!!!

That's right, one year after buying my welder I hooked it up! I can't believe this year has been so busy! I actually went to look at my burb the first time with the welder in the back of the Yukon!

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TM...0/DSCN0987.JPG

I grabbed a few pieces of scrap to run a few beads on to test it out. I was too excited to clean off the work, so...

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TM...0/DSCN0989.JPG

I have a side project that is paying for the Yukon engine going on right now. This is a Dana 60 semi floater housing from an International truck. I am building it with 3.73, POWR-LOK limited slip and 35 spline axles. The axle shafts will be drilled for 5x5 studs and it will be set up for disc brakes. The WMS spread on this axle will be 62 3/8" without the discs installed. As you guessed, it is going under a 70 Chevy pick-up so it will get chevy trailing arm mounts. The truck is using a full length trac bar. Thought you guys would like to see it!

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TM...0/DSCN0988.JPG

Also, I pushed the third seat for the burb all the way back and its become my chill out spot...

Oh good you have your helper ready too. You already started cutting, now you can start putting it back together.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family

very minor update. got the first donor door... I'm still looking for a donor right truck door to cut up. I want a right one for the contour. Truthfully though, I haven't been paid this month so I am broke and out of shielding gas. So I am waiting on that before I start welding anything back together.

Being out of gas gives me a chance to get the metal fit perfect.
