I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to design a little delay module that can turn your lights off automatically.

It would be slightly more difficult (though not impossible by any stretch) to design something like modern cars, that would leave the lights on for an additional 30 seconds or so if you turn them off after you turn off your ignition.

Late 70's and early 80's Caddies had this feature plus they had a really cool headlight chime that sounded like something out of an elevator or hospital. Trouble is, they're a little GM box with multiple inputs that don't easily relegate them to retrofitting into alternate platforms

Honestly, probably the largest cost would be prototype boards for a circuit like that, adding a small microprocessor and a chime wouldn't significantly increase the cost. You can get a simple 14-pin AVR for like $2.00

GM integrated this function into the seatbelt warning buzzer along with the key in the ignition with driver door open buzzer.

The Headlamp warning option is RPO T63.

The "extra wire" in the RPO T63 equipped trucks is from the instrument panel lamps. I believe the ground is from the key inserted switch in the column.

I found it, but didnt get any pics. It appears to be multi function with a connector for the "convenience reminder buzzer" and the cruise control module.

Ok, hats off to LDO ! He sent me one of the units he gathered from the junk yard. I plugged it in and voila! The sweet sound of a headlight chime was mine. Yes, the same sweet sound that irritated us in our youth and caused so many of these units to be ripped out long ago. Thanks again LDO.

Thanks again to LDO for the tip about the 7-prong buzzers. Got one at the junkyard this weekend for our ‘84 and it now has the headlight buzzer. No more neighbors stopping to tell us the headlights are still on! :lol:

The linked item should work perfect for a 30 second delay of your headlights. It's a rather powerful little item. I used one in designing a 12v school bell system, but have not used it on a truck yet.

Even though it's labeled for 10 amps, I wouldn't run the headlights through it directly. Instead, wire it up to control a relay.

This is how I have a 22535998 chime module hooked up on my 75 C10 to let me know that my lights are still on.

When I open the door with the head lights or parking lights still on the module will chime. I had to hook this up after coming out of stores to find a dead battery because I forgot to turn the lights off.

Run a wire from the door jamb ground switch to pin 3 and over to pin 6 on chime module.

Run another wire from the top plug on the head light switch to pin 7 on the chime module.
The top pin on the head light switch has 12 volts on it when the parking lights or headlights are on.

By using the door jamb switch as ground for pin 3 & 6 the module does not need 12 volts constant power to make a chime.

The fleet mechanics @ work used to ysnk these out without being asked, many of the drivers were pissed off because they'd forget....

Wire the headlight switch into a relay controlled by the accessory position of the ignition switch. Kill the ignition switch, and the lights go off. I really have no idea why all vehicles haven't done this years ago.

I'm doing this on a complete rewire job I'm doing, because I've never had reason to need headlights without the truck running.

My 1984 Subaru GL Hardtop and 1985 GL Wagon killed all the lights and the dash mounted power socket when I turned off the ignition. There was a way to turn the parking lamps on without the key if you wanted to... but durn if I can remember how it was done.

The 70's & 80's Watercooled VW and Audi headlamps would go out but the parking lamps stayed on.

More recent vehicles have automatic headlights. I don't even think about the headlamps on my Impala or my Silverado.

I'm a Tech Advisor to many vintage vehicle clubs, mostly oriented towards geezers like me, they're always wanting the buzzer for the headlights, I'll begin suggesting this relay idea instead .

i would try one of the factory buzzer first. I installed one in a previous build and was able to hear it. I'm fairly deaf and had no problem hearing the buzzer.

I too would keep it stock if I still had my 1976 GMC 2500 heavy duty fleet rig .

I bought it foe one job, rebuilt it stem to stern, had a nice drive up to the border and back then let it go because it was TOO DARN BIG, I miss it still ~ a 292 CID powered i6 with Muncie SM465 gearbox, heavy duty springs from new, 9,000 GVW .

I was the third owner and when I rebuilt the mangled dashboard I used all the high end factory gauges from junked Suburbans, I even sourced an original Delco AM/FM radio for it .

If only it had been a short bed step side...

The dual fuel tanks were nice too, it didn't use much gasoline but on long trips they came in handy .

In general I prefer stock to modifeid / Hot Rodded because I'm a cruiser who likes basic work trucks .

I’m usually in the yards once the weather warms up. Problem is, I’m after seats and interior parts, and I never get around or forget to grab these. I will try and remember these this year. They are super easy to remove.
