Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

Weekend progress was pretty good even though my time was limited more than I had hoped. Korbin brought a block, oil pan, and two heads over. That gave me something to work on. So, Owen and I mated it up to the transmission and worked on getting it mocked up. Got it in and the mounts all tacked up in a position that I like. after getting that in, I added the heads, intake and headers. Crap, the driver's header hits the frame stand...

So, I move on to the wire routing and connector repairs. Got the wires where I like them, so now I need to splice in the injector harnesses that I made up since this OEM harness was missing those. Its all laid out how I want it, but I don't have enough of the loom that I want to use. I will pick up about 3 feet of it today for the injector harnesses so that maybe I can finish those up today. I think that for time constraints, I will leave the rest out of loom for now to get to LST.

Here are pics from this weekend. Mostly after I got all the work done, no in progress shots..

While I worked on the wiring, Owen wire wheel the core support and got a coat of satin black paint on it. Turned out good for what he started with. I really should replace it, its kinda beat up, but it works for now.

Here is a link to the loom I am using on this. The first on is a expandable sleeve that is not split. I use this one on the wires that I have to terminate at least one end of the wires. I can slide it over before terminating and looks better in my opinion. The second on is the same look, but has a split and an overlap that allows it the be put on bundles of wires that already exist.

TechFlex 1/2" Braided Cable Sleeve

TechFlex 1-1/4" Split Braided Cable Sleeve

It comes in many sizes, so far for the first type, I have used 3/8" and 3/4". For the split stuff, I will need a bit of 1-1/4", 3/4", 1/2", and 3/8 or 1/4" stuff. It gets a bit expensive when you have to buy 10' and only need 3' of it...Amazon seems to have the best pricing if you have a Prime account.

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

Last night I was rocking along getting some small items knocked out. Got the transmission crossmember finished up and ready to go back in. Got the battery tray bolted to the core support, marked the flanges of the radiator to drill the needed mounting holes and got two of the bed mounts repaired.

Moved on to soldering wires together for the injectors. Got Injectors 1, 3, 5, & 7 done and heat shrink applied. Tie wrapped that section together and moved the harness around to get to the other 4 sets of wires.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbarcantk.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmjqtkdyy.jpg

I had unplugged my soldering iron to plug in my heat gun for the heat shrink. So while I was moving the harness around, I had plugged in the iron to let it heat up. I got the first set of wire ready to solder with the control wire twisted together, grabbed the iron and it was still not hot. Looks like my soldering iron died on me...well crap. So much for finishing that part of my project. :waah:

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psaxkg7gwv.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstausbwpy.jpg

Well, I moved on to fuel lines. I had bent up the two metal lines that go thru the bed floor and got those installed. Measured out the line length to cut the supply line to length. But my idea of pushing in the fittings did not work, so I called it a night. I found a thread on a homemade way of pressing the fittings into the line, so I will copy that and get some pics of what I'm doing with the fuel lines...It kinda took the wind out of my sail...maybe tonight will go better.

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

Got a replacement soldering iron yesterday, so I completed the wires that I could last night. I also worked on routing the harness a bit more.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmzbhizat.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pscd32l176.jpg

After the wiring, I mounted the radiator to the core support and mocked it back up to check a few things. I also mounted the power distribution block and the power wire from the battery into the core support. Since the CS has to come back out, I did not mount the terminal block or run the wires thru it yet. Getting closer...

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psth75chre.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps17xdrtoy.jpg

After that, I laid under the truck to study the drive line. I believe that I can make a 3" dia. one piece driveshaft work and clear the trailing arm cross member. I will get a couple more measurements and mock ups this weekend, but plan to get the DS local and have them build it Monday or Tuesday.

After I called in a night in the shop, Korbin came home and surprised me with a load of engine parts. I have almost everything I need to get the engine together this weekend. Plans now are to get the mock up done and finalize my DS layout on Saturday so that I can pull out the engine mock up Saturday night. Korbin and I hope to get the short block together on Sunday. Maybe even the long block if everything falls into place.

7 days left...

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

I wish I could pull some all nighters, but I have a job and 3 kids so that's not going to happen...lol.

I still think I can make my goal. This weekend was productive...and expensive...

This weekend, I got the block all cleaned up and installed new cam bearings with my homemade bearing installer for LS engines. Worked pretty good.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pspwsrcx74.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psw8pgbnjf.jpg

Got the short block all together, some of you might not agree with this, but I am trying Mat Hapel's way of Sloppy Mechanics. Reused all the 240k mile bearings on this assembly. I won't call it a rebuild since we just cleaned and reassembled with the old parts...I think the bearings look pretty good for that many miles, another reason that I am sold on LS engines.

Here are the main bearings:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslqa95ien.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pspm7xkgkm.jpg

Could not put on the heads, because the dowel pins in the deck are MIA. So, maybe I can find some today and get the long block finished up tonight. After that, I just need my new gaskets to put all the cover's back on. They should be here tomorrow. Korbin and Owen both helped me out putting it all together and we had a bit of father/son time and had some fun doing it. Hard to believe that this is my FIRST V8 I have put together...In the past I was the detail, paint and body and general mechanic work guy and had others do my engine work if involved more than external gaskets and cleaning.

Short Block:

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psywhhntur.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnqg5qqy6.jpg

Since I am waiting on my seals for the rest of the engine, I will finish up the trans seals, flex plate modifications, and some other small items that need attention during tonight's shop time.

The expensive part of the weekend, was late yesterday. I had to go buy a new refrigerator. Ours died some time during the night before. I cleaned the coils and that seamed to help, but by 6:30 last night it was running, but not cooling at all. So I had to run the Lowe's and drop a cool grand on a new one for the house. Oh Well that's life.

I have 4 shop days left...

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

:waah: I have always heard that bad things happen in threes.

On my way home, my wife calls and tells me that the clothes washer keeps showing an error code and that she just left the vet with our dog, Daisy. Well Daisy has a torn ligament in her hind leg and being a young working breed, she is very active and would rather chase a ball you through then have you pet her most of the time. She has to have surgery to repair it and has to stay off her leg for 2 weeks after the surgery. We love our dogs and treat them like family. So, she will have surgery next week.

I get home and start checking on the washer. The error is for an unbalanced load. I go thru the normal steps for that code and start it again. The basket is not turning... I pull the rear cover off and the motor is turning, but the basket does not. Get on the phone with a service tech and decide it is what they call the "spider assembly", I call it a coupling between the motor and the shaft that turns the basket. Get that on order, over $100 shipped to the house, it will be here Wednesday....

Ok, while I am diagnosing the washer, Korbin come over with the dowel pins for the heads/block. So him and Owen head out to the shop and start getting head bolts and part rounded up. I head out there between calls and give them some other parts that I picked up yesterday. Owen takes and installs the front shocks while Korbin and I go over the heads/bolts/block that we plan to get done tonight. He needs to go help a buddy with his truck that is scheduled to go to LST also, so he leaves and I go back in the house to update my wife on the washer, we also discuss me skipping LST for financial reasons, but she urges me to keep my promise to the boys and get my truck together and go to the show, got to lover her for that! I grab a bite to eat and after that I head out to the shop. Damn, I am already worn out....

SO, out to the shop I go. I get the heads scrapped down to remove the old head gasket and clean them up the best I can. Put the dowels in the block, wipe down the deck, the MLS gaskets and get the heads on. Get all the bolts in the correct holes and torque them down. Next, I go gather up all the push rods, the rocker stands, bolts and the rockers. Put a drop of lube on the end of the push rods and drop them in place. Cleaned up the stands and placed them on the heads. Get the rockers out of the box and they are nasty, and I only have 12... So, I drop them in some solvent to soak them over night, Korbin says he has 4 more. I primed and installed the oil pump before calling it a night. Little earlier than I planned, but that's life.

Engine at my stopping point for the night:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstaycseww.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psro1k3hra.jpg

Owen got the shocks on:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5w2nhqt3.jpg

While I was looking for the rockers and parts, Owen pulled out the rear shock crossmember and got it cleaned up to put in. We will do that tonight.

My gasket set and the new knock sensors should arrive today, so the plan is to work a bit latter tonight and get the engine all put together and possibly mated to the trans and put back in the truck. Stay tuned!

What oil pressure sending unit are you using and what did you use to get it in the block?

aggie91 02-21-2017 03:21 PM

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

The one in that pic is the stock style sending unit for the stock dash with lights, no gauges. The "adapter" is the OE Oil Pressure Sender with the top cut off and the guts removed, then drilled and tapped for 1/8" NPT. There are plenty of adapters on the market, but I had the means to make this one out of parts I had.

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

I just need one more bad thing to get to 6 for the week...

Found out our oldest dog has an issue to and went to the vet today, no real answer as to what's wrong and I get a bill for $264...:waah:

The part for the washer is the wrong one that the tech over the phone said it was, got the correct one on order now and now have to go thru the hassle of returns and refunds of the wrong one. Hope it comes in tomorrow as scheduled, I need to wash underwear...

OK, shop time update:

I picked up the new drive shaft on the way home and painted it before getting Owen from baseball practice. Last night had some help from both of my boys and Korbin's buddy, Drew. Korbin and Drew worked on the rear shock cross member and shock mounting, Owen worked on mounting up the front wheels and helped me with the assembly of the long block. Time did not cooperate with us last night, but I should have the engine mated up with the trans and sitting in the truck. I would really like get to the point of firing it up, but that might be a stretch...either way I am still shooting to make it to LST!

Here is the competed short block:

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

This might be the last update before LST...

Last night was a good night in the shop. We got a lot accomplished.

Engine, trans, and drive shaft are all in and bolted down. Shift linkage is hooked up, the engine wiring is hooked up less the MAF and the two Oxygen sensors. Need to install water pump and fan, the alternator and bracket, the belt, install the trans dip stick and a new pan gasket, and add all the fluids. I should be able to fire it up this afternoon. IF that goes well, then put on the front clip, drive around the block to check it out and then load it up for LST...

Again Korbin and Owen where out there helping the old man out, Owen has school and two baseball games today, so he headed to bed about 10:30 last night, Korbin stayed out with me till about midnight, and I called it quits at 1am. I had to come to work for 1/2 a day today.

Here are pics from last night. I meant to get some of the parts used to mate up the TH350, but I forgot...
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psel0hpvkk.jpg

Sloppy Style engine stand modifications. Turns out it did not need this much clearance, but it worked out..
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps1vkocyv2.jpg

Finished up the harness that goes to the Temp Sender and Oil Sender for the dash lights and to the starter...Purple wire to the starter, block plug to the Temp Sensor, and the blue wire to the Oil Pressure Sender.

Shortly before I called it a night. I added the plug wires after this pic and the alternator and bracket are not bolted in yet, its just to mock up...

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

Well, I did not make the goal of getting the truck to LST. We stopped at about 3:30am on Friday morning, got a bit of sleep then got back at it around 8:30 to try to start it. No luck, we trouble shot it for about 3.5 hours and not progress except to find a few wiring issues with the trucks wiring and the ignition switch. Fixed or bypassed those to crank and try to start it again. NOTHING. We have spark and fuel to the rails, the air is there too.

I gave up and decided to just head down to the show and enjoy the weekend and hangout. We headed out at about 2 and got down there about 5 that afternoon to check out the show and find our hotel. Got set up the next morning and had a great time. I will post a few pics later after I get them downloaded off my phone.

Here is what it looks like now:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfe4lx6in.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps8eqh6f3q.jpg

During the weekend, I talked to a few people and brainstormed ideas as to what could be wrong. I think the first step it to check that the PCM is firing the injectors, and to clean the injectors since they have been sitting for who knows how long. One idea is that they are stuck closed and that is keeping it from firing up. This makes some sense to me, since while we are cranking it over, we don't smell any gas fumes at all.

I am going to step away from it a bit and get a few home issues taken care of and watch a few of my son's baseball games, and attend one of my daughter's gym competitions.

Stay tuned as I work to fire this pig up...

Sorry you didn't make it. Just for giggles- check the ground in the harness at the pan rail on the drivers side. We were dead as a stone, had a tech 2 scanner saying all was well, tried different computers, etc. and I had missed putting it on. Screwed it in, fired right up like nothing ever happened.

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

I just had a dumb thought, I saw your facebook post over the weekend about it and it seems that you have overturned every rock you can to diagnose the no start deal.

I have heard on some newer cars, if the computer doesn't get an oil pressure signal, it will not start the car. I have no idea if this is the case here at all but it's a thought that came to mind. On those systems, I don't know if it cuts fuel or spark, or even if it's a real system put in place. Just thinking outside the box a bit.

aggie91 03-01-2017 06:09 PM

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

Scoot - I thought about that too. On the LS with the PCM that I am using, the OE oil pressure sender does not even go to the PCM, so I doubt that's the problem. Good thought anyway...

This is the 3rd one that I have done with this year model PCM and engine set up. I really think it is the stuck injectors or the wiring that I had to add to this cut up harness, which was the injectors and the Oxygen sensors. Once I get shop time again, I am going to verify that its firing the injectors, if it is, then I will pull the injectors and clean them and verify that they open and close when hit with 12V.

Karl,
Could you tell me about the master cylinder you used?
Is it a disc/disc master?
Are you using a porportioning valve?
Did you modify the pedal pushrod or use as is?
Where did you get it from?( part number)

Thanks for you time,
Brian

aggie91 03-06-2017 03:28 PM

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

I got it from RockAuto, it is a RAYBESTOS MC36367.

It is a disc/disc manual master cylinder for a 1969 Corvette. I have used it before without a proportioning valve and will try that again on this truck. I used the stock '65 manual brake pushrod and did not make any adjustments to it. If I end of needing a proportioning valve, I will add an adjustable one to the rear line only.

I got an unexpected 30 minutes in the shop last night. I decided to pull the injectors and see what's up with them. Pulled the Driver side first and all four would not cycle using an 18v Ryobi battery. So pulled the other 4 and have them soaking in cleaner overnight, then if I have time tonight, I will get them to cycle. If time permits, I will attempt to fire it up again...

Because I know you guys like pictures...

Re: 1965 Stepside, The LST Challenge

Finally!

Last nights shop time was productive, but not 100% a success. I was still having issues with getting 2 of the injectors to free up and cycle. So, I started searching thru Korbin's old parts stash from when he turbo'd his truck and switched to Deka 80's. I got lucky, found his old set of truck injectors. I was going to just use 2 of them, but noticed that the PN on them was different than the ones I was cleaning. Instead of mixing in a different PN, I tested each of his, they all cycled. I did a quick cleaning and installed them in my engine. Got it all buttoned up, put the battery back in and tried to start up this pig. It did not like it a first, but did get it to start and run for a second or two a few times.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaCvt_ZXa8g

Anyway, I need to figure out why it won't stay running, but at least I know it does now. I need to work on a few small issues and address the truck's wiring problems but it is progress in the right direction!

Big or small, progress is progress.

Got a response from Brendon at lt1swap.com, he runs a verification test to make sure the changes took to the PCM before sending it out. He reviewed the file for my PCM and it all took. OK, so its not the VATS.

I got out into the shop and looked over the engine and checked a few things he mentioned. All those looked good. I changed the wiring I was using to start it by adding a momentary switch so that I did not have to hold wires together. I fixed some obvious vacuum leaks. Tested the fuel system to make sure it was coming on briefly before starting. I noticed that it filled the rails, like it had leaked down while it has been sitting overnight. I did not have my fuel pressure gauge, so I could not measure pressure.

Cycle the fuel pump a few times to make sure I did not hear fuel rushing into the rails anymore and assumed that I had pressure now at the rail. I hit the switch and the engine fired up and ran. It settled in to a nice idle. I did not run it long since I don't have the belt (belt I got was about 2" too long) to run the water pump to keep it cool. Check out the short video...

Success!

That accomplishment made my whole day. I was starting to just say the hell with it and push it back outside and cover it up. Glad I gave it one more try.

I'll get a different belt on the way home today and see it I can get it to fit correctly. If I can, I will let it warm up and since it is still on stands, run the trans thru the gears to make sure that it turns the tires... If it all checks out, I will fix the truck wiring so that I can start it with the key and get this front boot on Old Blue this weekend.

I just might get to drive this thing again for the first time in 17 years...
