Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I started Saturday morning off by stripping this fat girl.
A couple hours with the wire wheel and it was looking pretty good. Next step was more POR15 metal Prep. I love this stuff, you can actually watch the rust disappear. Then it was time for some paint and reassembly. I guess I didn't get a pic of the dressed up fat girl by itself...sorry. Then I realized a problem. The rear is way too soft. I took 4 leaves out of the main pack and now I can bottom it out against the overloads with little effort. I guess I need to clean up a couple more leaves. |
Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Looks great. How did you scuff the POR15?
|
Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I did not scuff the POR15. I sprayed the top coat before it was 100% cured. Hopefully that works. :)

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Got all my body parts ordered today from a local place. They had a couple parts on hand and the quality seems good. I ordered 2 sets of rockers, inner rockers, cab corners, and floor plans. It should all be here next week so I can start the next phase.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Cool who is the manufacturer?

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I have no idea. I'll find out when I get them I guess.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I added the two lower springs back into the pack and think I am a lot closer to where I need to be. I will know more once I get a bed on the truck.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
That looks a lot better.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I started cutting out the rusty floor and rockers and started fitting panels. This is going to take a while to get everything fitting g correctly.
Don't worry, the doors will go back on before welding so I can be sure the rockers are lined up. |
Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
A little more fitting tonight. Anyone who has been here please feel free to chime in. I think the rocker is pretty close, but the floor appears to be way off where it nests with the rocker. Am I missing something or are these panels just that much off. I can make them work, but before I start cutting them up I would like some opinions.

Just went through that on a passenger rocker, maybe these pictures will help a little. If I lay a straight edge across the original floor / inner rocker it sits roughly 3/8 to 1/2 inch above the new outer rocker seal lip / edge.
I didn't have to replace my inner rocker or floor. I lined my rocker up by hanging the door to check the lower gap and also using door measurements off the drivers side from top of door frame to rocker sill. That gave me a pretty good idea of where the new rocker needed to be. Hanging the door was the most beneficial. |
Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
The pics do help. At least I have some reference. Thanks. I will re-hang the front door tomorrow before going any further.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I put the front door back on and verified the position of the rocker. It was 1/8" low in the front. I ran a couple screws to lock it in place. I then focused my attention back to the floor. I build a patch for the transmission tunnel and got it tacked in. I need to clean up the underside before I weld any more. I don't like fires. :) The floor pan should work out with a little more trimming and persuading.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Finished the transmission tunnel patch and started burning in the floor. I have to make a couple fillers. One because the new pan just didn't get to that area and one because I made a bad cut. Oh well, it's just 200 extra spot welds :)

Nice work man. You are getting after it. Going to meet your April deadline for towing your jeep?

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Looks good, that is a lot of work to get done. After doing your own rust work you start to understand why body shops charge so much.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Floor pan is fully welded. I could grind the welds more, but it isn't worth the effort. It will be under sound deadening and carpet anyway.
The fillers were a bit of a pain, but they came out just fine. |
Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Cut, weld, grind...cut, weld, grind...cut, weld, grind. That is all I seem to do anymore. The drivers side front floor and rockers are done and the rear rocker has been modified and is ready to weld in.
For those wondering how to do complete rockers for a crew cab using 2 front sets, here is my take on it. So much fun look good thanks again for the frame pieces

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on the truck this week. I did at least get the rear rocker in place and started blending in the voids and blending the rear into the front. Hopefully I can finish up the drivers side this weekend.
