Shamefull underhood photo of my '65. It is pretty much "as purchased" except I replaced the Edelbrock "fire starter" style air cleaner with an open paper style.

I will give it a once over eventually, but for now it's "good enough"....

There's some nice looking engine compartments on this thread. Even the ones that aren't pretty are still cool because they RUN, which is more than say for mine right now.

Question: The guys running big blocks: Did you have any clearance issues with the passenger valve cover and the firewall? Did you have to move the engine forward? Any clearance issues with the heater box? I'm asking because I'm going to install my donor 454, and the firewall has the original paint that I would like to keep. I'd rather not have to modify the firewall if at all possible.

I'm going to be running the factory Chevrolet chrome valve covers, which are pretty low.

Here's a pic of mine when I first stuffed it in - there's about a finger width of space in the red circled area with engine mount towers on the forward frame mount holes. Edelbrock valve covers fit fine - heater box is okay; probably gave me the most trouble clearing the brake booster going in.

My '63 always had blue with a blue valve cover.

Of course, I could be wrong in your case. I'm sure someone will correct me. I just think it's supposed to all be blue.

After removing several years of grease I discovered a remanufacturer's name plate. ,http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/p.../DSCN9361a.jpg

Is there a way to match the block serial number to the VIN on a 64 C10? Rephrased, if the motor is original shouldn't they end with the same numbers? My block has the number F07I7N, which in no way resembles the VIN.

What headers did you use on your BBC install? I've got one just like it getting ready to go in my suburban.

Re: Lets see some 1960 - 1966 engine bays

In preparation for the fenderwell headers I’m going to install right after I win the lottery, I spent the last few days removing the engine compartment portion of my inner fender panels. I always thought it looked cool on the gassers back in the 60’s, and provides unrestricted access to almost everything on the front of the truck. From grille bolts to upper control arms – everything is now in plain view. For an old guy with a bad back this is a nice benefit. I left the fender and hood attaching portion, and will be reinforcing the box channel for strength and cosmetics.

Here’s how it looks today:

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/6646/post01a.jpg

The original panels were damaged in a deer collision back in the 60’s, and were starting to show rust through in spots. After a great deal of study about the feasibility, I decided I’d rather remove the engine compartment portion instead of replacing them. The passenger side was out in about 90 minutes. The driver side didn’t cooperate at all and took several hours to remove.

There’s a lot of work remaining before it looks decent. Everything from the firewall forward needs to be either done over or cosmetically detailed. Should I ever change my mind, nothing on the truck itself has been altered. I can simply source replacement inner fenders and reinstall them. That’s rather doubtful as I’m really enjoying the improved access to everything, and the truck almost never sees bad weather.
