64_c10,

here are a couple pics of the power steering unit before i installed it onto my truck. Its pretty basic the way it bolts to the motor, two spots on the head, then a supporting brace that shares the tension adjusting bolt of the alternator.....

I got this power steering setup off of a 62 chevy II that had a 230 in it. My truck has the 250, which shares the same head as the 230 so it was a perfect fit.

Murdoc,

Thanks for the info and pics. Do you have any of the engine bay with it installed? I'm still unsure of what pulleys may need changing.

I have a 65 GMC with a 230 in it as well. I am trying to figure out the colour of the motor. Mine looks like this one, that is, an orange block, a blue head and a red Chevrolet valve cover. I kinda see blue in this pic, am I right. Was this standard, or has someone pieced the motor together. I have seen motors completely blue, have seen others completely orange. From the vin number I know my truck was built in the Fremont plant in California. Any light on the matter would be appreciated.

Ken,

Yes, the blue you see there is actually from the torque converter/pressure plate cover for my powerglide transmission. the engine is a 250 from a early 70's nova, so the paint isnt period correct. I might be wrong but im almost certain that the chevy orange color never made it onto any of the 230 or 250 sixes for our year trucks, at least i never have seen it on them before. someone might chime in and help me out here...

64_c10,

Here are some more pics of the belt/pulley setup. Almost every standard, basic six cylinder had a one grove pulley for the crank, fan and alternator. A single belt connected the three pulleys and was tightened at the alternator with a bracket that's mounted to the head.

In case the pics are a little bad, ill tell ya what you'll need...

2 groove crank pulley
2 groove fan pulley
2 groove alternator pulley

http://img5.uploadhouse.com/fileuplo...008f2a8f31.jpg
My truck uses the same standard pulley arrangement as mentioned above, except the belt that runs them is on my second groove.

http://img5.uploadhouse.com/fileuplo...663f1217c5.jpg
I reserved the first groove (the innermost groove) for my power steering pulley, which just runs off of my inner alternator pulley and the power steering pulley (28" belt)

http://img6.uploadhouse.com/fileuplo...793ee18b8a.jpg

NOTE: If you have only a single groove pulley setup, you can use just one belt for all the pulleys because the power steering pulley is designed to go on the first, innermost groove. I have done this in the past, its just a pain cause you have to tension the alternator bracket, then the power steering bracket. There isn't any right or wrong way to do these, I've seen them done in several different ways.

Hope this all helps, I love my straight six, I love my power steering, I love my truck. Its been a real fun ride to drive around in. Cheers :barn:
