Re: GRIZZ’s English 2001 S10 Extra Cab 4.3 V6 Truck

Got to go back to Friday.

When the wheels were being machined.

A few pics and a short video to add to the information about the process.

Being milled.

Click video link.

https://youtu.be/M1Lr_CGuZBE

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(161).jpg

Followed by more machine polishing.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(162).jpg

So today I gave the new lodger a ride to the station after meeting number 3, also stopping to drop off the new tyres to be fitted and balanced by Kerbed Wheels

I was talking to Thomas about the wheels on the Rezin Rockit and before I even left, the first tyre was fitted and balance.

Big grin, this guy really loves his job.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(527).HEIC

So I left the wheels and tyres to be fitted while I went to buy some food and drop the lodger at the station as he was headed home to Wales.

I also bought some chocolate as a desktop thank you for the guys, beers would not be appropriate

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(533).HEIC

When I got back, the wheels were waiting and another chat about mate Bills wheels in Scotland, which he wants them to do when he has settled in his new home.

We loaded the wheels and I headed back home, big grin on my face.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(531).HEIC

Unpacked the food and was caught out by evening creeping in on me.

So nothing fitted, I also need to order some new chrome wheel nuts.

Thanks for checking in and thanks to those of you commenting.

Much appreciated.

Well....

More pics later as a tease.

I actually was on the driveway at 07.00 today, before starting work.

Have fitted and photographed two on the truck.

Some new wheel nuts needed, and centre caps to be figured out as the front hub centres protrude by about 70mm or so.

And more importantly, before selling off the Cragars.........

A SERIOUS BURNOUT VIDEO NEEDS TO BE MADE.

I really wish I had someone with a drone camera to film overhead and then it could be turned into a very short, well edited video with two or three angles being filmed.

The tame stunt driver would have to be @pauly as he knows how to rip the assssss out of assphalt

Remember this???

Paul came to fetch a work bench, note all the furniture on the rear.

Re: GRIZZ’s English 2001 S10 Extra Cab 4.3 V6 Truck

So I got the wheels home.

Unpacked and rolled them around back.

A few random pics and my observations.

Firstly, the need a clean to remove the “glide soap” from the tyres.

Front and back. Powder coating allround. Only mounting faces left fresh n clean out the blasting cabonet.

Thomas told me the cabinet took 14 minutes to do a complete wheel.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(535).HEIC

Front side.

Note the way the light actually plays and lightens the dark Anthracite

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(530).HEIC

Rear faces. Love the dark rim, great for brake dust and road grime cammo.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(529).HEIC

Also tried it with a repainted centre cap in place.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(163).jpg

Then mocked them next to the truck.

They are quite a lot taller than the 17” Cragars. Around 45mm so a gain of 20-ish mm

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(528).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(534).HEIC

All done.

Nicely stashed indoors. You dont want them to get wet now, do you ?

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(532).HEIC

I must be honest I wanted to fit them but failing daylight was my excuse.

More later.

Your center caps look good on those wheels Rian! Once they are mounted I think you will have a super looking combo on the truck. I like the taller tires myself.

Thanks Bill.

I am a fan of comfort, and low profile tyres can be pretty uncomfortable

Ready or not.........

07.00 this morning I was out there, the night had been long, waiting to get up and test fit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(540).HEIC

Couple of things became apparent, brakes have not worked for a while, pushing and pulling the truck around on the driveway.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(541).HEIC

Also, top and bottom control arms need to be serviced and greased, just like my 1966 C10 grease nipples everywhere.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(538).HEIC

And the turning circle may be impaired by wheels that are too wide, compared to OEM fitment rubber.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(539).HEIC

Then, on to the front and rear hubs.

Fronts now show why we have those huge Mexican hats as centre caps.

Needs around 60-70mm tall caps/cups up front, there is also space for a spigot ring, or for the cups to become captive from behind.

Maybe a spigot ring is not needed, but the wheel is sitting nice and loose.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(164).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(536).HEIC

Rears fit tight enough that it needed to be whacked to remove after the test fit.

So some flat cap will work here.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(537).HEIC

The truck also came with locking wheel nuts, something I dislike intensely, and I did not get the socket that unlocks it when I bought it.

Thankfully I managed to get both loose, one was quite loose, possibly finger tight.

So getting decent new nuts makes sense

I am still in two minds, there are a few options at this point.

@forddan68 and @freshandminty are possibly along with a few others the guys to ask about this.......

Wheel protection.

One of my friends, Paul, off a bike forum suggested I consider protecting the wheels with the following product.

And Henry @rider51 suggested ceramic coating.

Now in my wildest dreams I never thought there was a way to protect the protection on the wheels, but there is a learning in every day.

What is the consensus here please

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(165).jpg

I was looking at some really manky wheels in Romford, supposedly from a Cobra (Replica?) that were Ex Jaguar to possibly run as winter wheels.

Seller reckons the tyres are good, I am not convinced.

I showed him the rears on the truck, even the central moulding stripe has not been run off, Nankangs, and yet, in my book, only good for destruction.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(542).HEIC

These do look pretty rubbish for £50.00 but could they be a chance worth taking @rider51 ?

Imagine them blasted, painted with Hammerite or some bronze type colour, winter wheels.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(166).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...ix/001(54).PNG

And finally, pics taken this morning.

These were removed again after the photoshoot, done for the pleasure of those of you who do take the time to write, click respond, share knowledge.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(543).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(544).HEIC

And the rear view.

Really happy so far.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(545).HEIC

Once I figure the wheel nuts, centre caps etc, we should be in business.

Next job.........???

Grizz1963 02-25-2021 04:39 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s English 2001 S10 Extra Cab 4.3 V6 Truck

Man in a brown van rang the doorbell.

I was made happy.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(134).JPG

Thanks to Robert Pilgrim for selling me an original airbag leather covered steering wheel for the truck, as a standby to replace the Grant wheel fitted, originally wanted to replace it, but have got used to it now.
So it will be stashed along with some other original parts just to keep the truck as original as possible.
At £40.00 for the steering plus airbag charge, he did me a massive favour, and courier was £15.00 so a total of £55.00

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(167).jpg

Also included in the parcel was an intact top cowl for the radiator as mine is in bits, including riveted pieces to keep it together. Chuffed to bits to be able to repair this.

When my battery started to fail, I replaced it, and on removing the old unit, I realised the tray was filled with holes.
Again, Robert found me one on his outward bound steel scrap pile. FOC
This needs to be media blasted and then primed and painted.

Most importantly.......

Alongside the new wheels I bought, there were no wheel nuts.

And these trucks use a specialised wheel nut to go with the centre caps.

Look at the detail. 20 vital parts.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(169).jpg

So threads on the outside as well,.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(168).jpg

The plastic caps screw onto the wheel nuts, holding the centre caps in place.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(163).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(547).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(546).HEIC

Sold the 5 Cragars to a good friend last night for his 80’s Dayvan build.

Tyres, as mentioned before were great as far as tread is concerned.

Rears are good for burnouts...... @pauly is on standby.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(542).HEIC

And fronts, not really good for a jolly to the coast, are they.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(548).HEIC

Today I wanted to tint the side glass, but between the weather and the day job, all I got done was to give the stuck a decent wash, and it does like to be clean and shiny.

While washing, I noticed the exhaust tailpipe........... made me wonder if this is all one system, recalling the video @pauly made the day I departed in it.

Little jobs

Little jobs

All get done, eventually.

Some sooner than others.

This one is a pain in the butt, because of the amount of dismantling needed to get it done, not quote the same as popping a new toilet roll on, though I believe even that is a struggle for some.

So Rob sent me these bits.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(167).jpg

And the battery tray, though a lot better than mine, still needed work.

Rough as a badgers bum.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(170).jpg

So I thought about it.

Wire wheel, or blast it, except my blasting cabinet is 80 miles from here with Craig as he is cleaning small bits for his sons Mk1 Golf Rabbit Cabriolet

So plan B ?

Take a chance and run down to the industrial estate to Kerbed Wheels to ask Thomas how much t do it. “Leave it here, come back tomorrow” was his reply.

So yesterday at about 4.30 I ran down there again to find he had blasted it for me, Cost? No charge, because he had done it after they shut down shop on Wednesday evening.

Pleased with that.

Loads of pitting from all the rust, I guess the are cheaply made parts and are also exposed to weather and having a concave shape, water may stay there a bit longer and drive the rusting process. Add to that, cheap mass produced paint, and you certainly have a recipe for disaster in the long term.

Result.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(552).HEIC

By the time I got home it was 5.30 so I decided to get the etch primer out and my heat gun.

Warmed the piece up, primed it one side, dried it and turned over, repeat.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(554).HEIC

Then on to three coats of satin black, again lighter than usual, but dried with help inbetween.

First coat down.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(553).HEIC

And then three coats later, it looks glossy, is actually dry, but it is a high impact wheel paint, so surprised me with the final finish.

The pitting is very obvious now as well, but does not bother me, as it is an improvement, and will be going down under the battery.

As an add in, I will add some strips of rubber (maybe old inner tube material) to absorb some of the movement when the battery is bolted down.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(555).HEIC

Little jobs indeed.

Nice work on the battery holder Rian. Between quality of parts and the ooozing of batteries, they do get pitted . Luckily the battery hides most of it.

I suspect they are very much bargain/budget parts.

Great advice from @jamesd1972 to add a coat of underbody protection in stead of a lump of rubber thats liable to hold water in place and promote rust.

So during a work meeting, I went and painted it quickly.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(556).HEIC

While doing another little job today, I also crawled under the truck to take a look at the exhaust system.

Seems we have a lot more Magnaflow stainless parts under the truck.

Someone in the past spent a lot of money on this truck.

I guess I am also doing the same, spending chunks of money on seeing it right as my long list of fixes continues to grow,

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(171).jpg

I continue to be pleased with the truck and what it is proving to be.

The extras and upgraded parts on the truck when added up are approaching 60% of the price I paid, crazy man maths.

Grizz1963 02-26-2021 03:40 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s English 2001 S10 Extra Cab 4.3 V6 Truck

More haste, less progress.

I wanted to do the side glass windows tint today.

FAIL FAIL FAIL.......

I was not patient enough to wait for Saturday till Sally could help me by holding the films one side.

So I cut a piece to size

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(563).HEIC

Then I laid it out on the film on the outside of the door, remembering to place it so that once cut to shape, it could be stuck to the inside of the glass.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(560).HEIC

Then proceeded to removing the backing film, and using water (should have been soapy water) to place it, out in the sunshine with a very gentle breeze.......

Guess what.....??

Massive failure here. As the wind twisted it, alongside static pulling it about.

So I removed it.

Laying what was left of it, once removed, on the counter top, in order to copy it.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(562).HEIC

Thought I could copy a second one, then called over the hedge for Mickey to come hold one side........

And cut a copy of the failed item.

BUGGGERRRRRRRRR !!!

Cut it about 8mm short.

Close up.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(558).HEIC

So I removed and binned number two

So the outcome of the window tinting was good though, and this is the before ad after pcs.

Soon to be corrected.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(561).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(559).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(557).HEIC

Ordered some more film tonight after work, £10.99 wasted on education I guess.

Maybe I can fit the battery tray and radiator cowl over the weekend.

Little jobs we said.

You have probably done way more than me, but I was taught to and also remove the inside door panel (card I think you folks call them) before I do the tint. Gives me room to get it below the door wiper. I have never had much luck getting them on correctly the first time and the big issue I seem to always have bugs between the film and glass.

I am amazed that I failed twice.

But it happens.

Next time, 4 hands, and spray the film as well, stops it stu]Viking to itself.

Re: GRIZZ’s English 2001 S10 Extra Cab 4.3 V6 Truck

Some days start good.

Today started a lot earlier than I wanted, but hey ho...... sleep when we are dead ehhh.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(565).HEIC

So had breakfast then drew the truck down to the shop.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(567).HEIC

Battery out.

Wonder why these trays rust so badly.......?

Water access is easy from the front.

And putting a rubber mat under the battery, not ideal I would think.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(566).HEIC

Holes and probably more out of sight.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(568).HEIC

Old n new(er)

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(173).jpg

Battery back in.

Then removed the radiator cowl.

Old vs Replacement

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(569).HEIC

While in there, I also noticed the new radiator that I had been told by the lady who owned the truck before, had been fitted.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(564).HEIC

I also dismantled the underside of the dash to look at the fog light switch..... completely broken, possibly kicked at some point.

So I just put it all back together. I will fix it another day.

It was time to head out to the shops for food etc.

Silly grin, and a distinct difference in response since I cleaned up the air filter and breathing system.

Headed home, Sally chuckled and said I looked really happy, which I was.

I have to keep reminding myself not to drive like an idiot, but it feels and sounds so nice.

She somehow sneaked a pic in while I was driving.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(172).jpg

It was a good day.

Grizz1963 02-28-2021 06:47 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s English 2001 S10 Extra Cab 4.3 V6 Truck

Rubbish, Misty and chilly outside today.

So what can I do to keep busy?

Not a lot as mostly I want to be outside.

So I used a cut off 2 liter milk bottle and some oven degreaser, followed by boiling water, then neat dishwashing soap on a brush and cleaned every wheel nut and cap individually, 20 nuts, 11 caps.

Rinsed them all with more boiling water, followed by a further wash and boiling water rinse for the nuts to ensure they were oil and grease free.

Grubby as can be.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(547).HEIC

First wash and rinse.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(570).HEIC

Second wash and boiling water rinse.

Dried.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(571).HEIC

Then fetched some foam] from the garage, sliced a couple of slots deeply into it and fitted the nuts in order to protect the external threads.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(573).HEIC

Painted a few light coats of satin black.

Happy with the result.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(572).HEIC

So I hear a few ask me why ??

Simply put, to fool the eye.

There are only 11 of these wheel nut/centre cap retaining cap screws right now, so visually it should look better if they are all black, than some anodised gold or silvery from damage.

Much effort, but another small visual gain.

PS. Not fitting new wheels till the Poorboys wheel wax from Amazon has been delivered and applied to the wheels while they are off the truck.

Time for another drive now.

Nice. Not sure about you folks over there, but I got in the habit of putting a dab of anti-seize in the nuts before I put them on. All our humidity and all makes them rust up pretty quick in the threads. It sure helped in Japan with all the snow and slush crap too. Keep on trucking with er Rian, she is good!

My SKY internet and WiFi was down for 24 hrs, and where I live, my mobile signal is 2 bars on 3G and intermittently 1 bar of 4G

So a struggle to work from home.

However, by 08.00 I got onto this.........

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(578).HEIC

Then late afternoon, well, just after 4.00pm I got out the Poorboys wheel wax.

Hard to believe it makes a difference, and I tried to feel if it felt any smoother, no idea.

But happy to believe that it will aid maintenance.

Once I was done, looking at how little of this stuff I had used, and that is on both sides, I was amazed at just how frugal it is.

At £14.00 delivered for the tub, I suspect one could expect to do another 50 wheels or more.

Another step closer to fitting.

I have never heard of the stuff prior to you mentioning it Rian. Is that a UK polish or pretty much global? Those wheels look really good clean and polished up.

Guess I never looked for or at it since I have had very few alloy wheeled vehicles. Almost all my wheels have been steel. Thanks Rian. I'll keep them in mind if I get some alloy wheels.

I think they will protect steel or alloy though Bill.

This week has been slow for the truck progress.

Went for a walk.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(581).HEIC

Postie came as I got home.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(580).HEIC

Damaged.

So declined to receive parcel.

Took pics and sent to seller, he has not replied.

Let’s hope he does reply and replace as eBay sent a message email to say I had received my item.

Lodger continues to be a real problem.

Scruffy, dirty, disorganised, drunk, and this morning overslept by 2 hrs, then called in sick.

I see tears, and they will not be mine.

I will be brutal.

However, good news last night from Andy in Tulsa, Oklahoma with the first print section of the RUMBLEGRIZZKIN name that he will be using in casting me a set of new side badges for the truck.

Short video of the magic happening.

I am sure the weekend will throw up some jobs to do.

It is Friday.

Very soon I suspect he will self destruct and play out his own hand.

I do not care what he does to himself.

However, when you leave taps running, all the lights on, leave doors unlocked when you go out to smoke, don’t clean your used crockery etc...... your assss in getting booted.

On Tuesday I gave him a ride to town (7 miles there) and back to ostensibly buy food and toiletries. He is extremely hygiene shy , first lodger ever to be just dirty.

So he bought cookies, crisps, sausage rolls, and two packs of sausages.

Ohhhh and a bottle of Kooparberg cherry rum, and a bottle of lime Gin that he mentioned he owed someone.

Later the evening this was how I found him....... lights all on, movie on his PC, back door open as he had gone out to smoke during the evening.

He had ordered Chinese take away (I hate food going to the bedroom, and may have to address it) there is a table and chairs in the kitchen. The plate and knife and fork took till yesterday to come down after I had asked him 3 times in the previous days to bring stuff down.

So this was what I found. Seen from the door.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(586).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(583).HEIC

Then the night before last, I offered him dinner as I had cooked enough, he had dinner, sat down here talking a load of sh!t about festivals, and his achievements of getting drunk, memory loss and ending up in medical tents etc.... clearly a kid parents are proud of. Yes, I judge them.

He then proceeded to head upstairs intermittently and outside to to smoke. Hell.... he stinks.

By 9.00pm he had fallen asleep on the couch, a deep sleep, I told him repeatedly to go up to bed, and he kept saying no.

When he did het up, it took three attempts, he could hardly stand and I was waiting for him to fall over on his face.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(584).HEIC

When I went upstairs an hour later, again, this was what I found......

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(585).HEIC

Speaking to him yesterday, he claims not to recall anything after dinner......

I see tears .......

Not mine.

Thanks for the lead.

Do they screw on and keep the centre caps fixed?

Yes. They are copies of the GM lugnut covers. They screw onto the outside of the dual threaded lugnuts and retain the center cap.

Re: GRIZZ’s English 2001 S10 Extra Cab 4.3 V6 Truck

A rare thing happened yesterday.

Sally came over by 08.30 for tea and toast and to spend some time, I rarely go to her place, as there are no toys, and she prefers to come here..

So we had brekkie together, the watched some recorded telly, and by 12.00 she went home to see her grandson and son, also to allow me to get outside as by then I was feeling very guilty.

I was chuffed though, that I had managed to sit and do nothing for a few hours.

She is a sneaky photographer and waited for me to start looking for a hole in the trucks bulkhead.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(177).jpg

I had two small jobs to do.

Replace the switch on the rear fog light with a metal item and ensure it still worked.

So out with the very broken old red unit. In with the new.

Happy.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(591).HEIC

Next job after finding a small man made hole in the bulkhead was to thread a wire through there.

That was a mistake, as I ended up removing it, and enlarging the hole with a step drill, and then running two wires in there, finding them snaking in from under the dash.

I also used some flat 3 core household wire to thread through the face of the dash, so that I could connect it to the two wires and then pull them up through the dash.

These modern cars are so compactly made, and even the threading of wires are a bit more complex as there is so much under the dash, blocking access.

Still, got it through and then got the wires back up out the front.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(590).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(589).HEIC

Next job inside was to drill a hole to take the new metal push button for the Klaxon horn.

I hate damaging the cars plastics, and mad as it may seem, I will keep an eye out for a replacement piece to stash with all the other unused parts.

Mate Kevin who is moving house soon, also popped around for a looksee, couple of mugs of tea and a chat.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(587).HEIC

Once the internal jobs were done, I needed to find a live to draw current from.

As earning was easy via the mounting bolt, and the pigs tail out the horn.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(588).HEIC

And once fitted, happy with the tidiness achieved.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(176).jpg

I forgot to take pics of the completed switches before dark. So good morning.

Thanks Bill,

I do believe the truck is worthy of the attention.

Maybe one day when mine falls in the criteria for Truck of the month, I would like it to be worthy.

It is a waste of time doing a repair at sub standard levels, I never get it why people do sub standard work or use cheap and nasty parts, like the switch it had fitted.

Went to get milk and bread in the truck earlier.

Stopped and checked in on friend Kevin, who,is building the Deusenberg replica.

It is now in paint.

Thought a few random pics up at his place were in order.

Thames river and Essex, when’re the truck was from in the background.

Daffodils.

They grow off bulbs and come back most years, at the end of winter.

Also the logo for Marie Currie cancer care.

Off Google.

Daffodils are a hardy and easy perennial that grows in most regions of North America, except in the hottest, wettest areas, such as South Florida. Daffodils are a fall-planted bulb, so plant them in autumn and they will bloom in late winter or early spring.
The traditional daffodil flower may be a showy yellow or white, with six petals and a trumpet-shape central corona, but many cultivated varieties (“cultivars”) exist today. Leafless stems bear between 1 and 20 flowers; sometimes the flowers need to be staked so that they don’t weigh down the stems.
Daffodils are suitable for planting between shrubs or in a border, or for forcing blooms indoors. They look wonderful in a woodland garden and in large groves. You’ll find that many gardeners plant the bulbs not just by the dozens but by the hundreds! Daffodil flowers also make for great springtime cut flowers.
