Re: Pic Thread: Not Just El Caminos
I can't get enough of these! That '57 looks like it has an under bed storage door. Very cool!

I see that now. All of these sure took a dedicated bunch of skilled work. That's for sure.

That '58 Elnomad has my eye. While I'm not a 58 fan that one looks good. The rear window/lift hatch treatment of several of these is interesting.
The pink Rambler? Well, uh, trying to be nice. Just NO. |

'58s are very truck-like... boxy wide square stout. That's why my favorite '58 is the Sedan Delivery. To me it looks like a panel truck that was customized... chopped channeled and such. The '57 cars had fins and so did the '59, so none on a '58 lends to the truck vibe a bit when compared to it's closest siblings. '58s are all by themselves for sure. They are a love or hate car. I like them for being different and being Chevy's one year of jumping in with the trend of big boxy turnpike cruisers before stepping into their own direction with the 59.60s bursting at the seam with style while being that big chunk of hiway metal.

Did you hear what that conversion added to the cost... in 1966? That was one very expensive novelty!

It wasn't a truck! No, seriously, this settles it once and for all... except those so rigid in their thinking they prefer ignorance to enlightenment. I know, OUCH! But really, who wants to argue forever? In that vid the guy called it a "pickup". That is what El Caminos are. They are absofarkinlutely pickups. Stupid argument is truck vs car. Hang up that meaningless eternal crap. A C/10 is "pickup truck", a C/60 is a "truck", an El Camino is unmistakably a "pickup". You can say it's a car if you have to because it's a Chevelle. Can't deny that. There was a Chevelle 2dr & 4dr sedan, 2dr sports coupe, Convertible, station wagon, and pickup. A convertible isn't a sedan, a sedan isn't a station wagon, a station wagon isn't a sports coupe, none are pickups except the El Camino. That's why they were made. Chevy already made all the above before 1964, then they added a pickup to the new mid-size line. In '59 there was only full-size... a term that didn't exist till the Chevy II. In 1959 a new concept was born in Chevy's line up. It's GM's light duty pickup. That's all

Spoken in my best barrel chested Mr. Big Guy voice, "A real truck don't need no training wheels". Yeah, I see them as light trucks built on a car platform. I believe they only stopped production after '87 because the 1500-3500s of '88 were going the route of car-like comfort and the S-series was a proven success for the lighter end by that time (5 years of production/sales by '87). Plus gave better fuel economy with the I-4. Isn't there something about average fuel economy across the line being the way the EPA sets their standards/requirements?
How about a Grey Poupon hauler? Rolls Royce |

I like that they didn't feel they had to make it an SS to be something. Hey, how about a COPO Camino? That would be awesome. Give the "300" treatment in one of the lighter metallics Another Chrysler Ute... '52 Correction: That's labeled wrong. It's a GM... Holden. I thought it looked too cool to be a Chrysler . Looks like the same quarters as on the Chevy Utes of the time |
Re: Pic Thread: Not Just El Caminos
in the eighties, there was an all original, one owner, 66, big block, four speed, sat in a storage unit north of here for years. The widow wanted $6,000 for it. I'm not sure why I don't own it.

Studebaker built cars and trucks. That is a '37 pickup truck. They called it the Coupe Express. And I've always wanted one.

I remember my company (idiots) bought a couple of those mail type right hand drive Jeeps and of course I got stuck with driving one. That thing was a gutless mess. And squirrely as hell. I took it on the freeway once. I was going up a fairly steep grade and it was a windy day. I felt like I was taking my life in my hands. It was all over the road. And slower than cold molasses. |
