Made a little road trip to Steven's (Smbrouss70) this morning to do a little tuning on his GTO and to check out progress on gringoloco's truck. Visited with Kevin (65streetcruiser) and Steven for awhile.

Me too Bill it's been too long since I've seen you, hate I missed you at the meet. I am gonna follow your lead and retire soon, missing too much truck stuff. Hey I don't worry about the bugs on this one like I did on the blue truck lol.

After running this thing awhile the AC is not doing so good. When you get it charged with the right amount of 134A the pressure falls to zero when the clutch engages after about 10 seconds. Acts like something is plugged. I called up vintage air and they gave me a couple of possibilities. The one thing they thought on top of the list was a plugged expansion valve from the "crumbs" made when you cut the hose. So i pulled it all apart and changed the expansion valve. We'll see what happens when I'm done.

That's unfortunate. Hopefully that solves your problem and your back on the road asap.

Thanks Kyle. I still haven't got it cooling right. I am in Waxahachie Tx for the Classic truck nationals and Vintage air was there. They gave me a few more things to check and i will be speaking to their tech guys tomorrow on how to troubleshoot the controls. They are great folks to deal with. I also ran into our old buddy Mike Losh yesterday, he does the slosh tubz and I got to check out his reproduction buddy buckets in person. Man they are nice. If someone needs a set he is the man, he also has them for square bodies. I wish I would have taken photos but my phone was dead.

just read through this thread. Nice work and such a good way to use good parts off the blue truck to build this one up. Hopefully, I can check it out at C10's in the Park next month. I must have missed it at the Classic Truck Nationals.

A couple of updates. I had a nagging problem with overheating in traffic. After trying 2 different aluminum radiators I got a local radiator shop to see if he could get me an old school copper brass 4 row radiator. Scored one but was expensive however it cured the problems I was having. Also switched out my AC controls for this slick vintage air unit. I needed the room behind it to clean up the clutter and this did it. AC is working ok but the test will be this coming weekend on a trip to C10s in the Park. I hope I get to see some folks off here, there is a big crew coming from Louisiana with us.

I guess I missed you and the truck this weekend. I know I did not see all the trucks. I have seen pictures on social media of trucks, and thought "I never saw that one"...

Sorry we missed you Karl, I saw where you saw Gringo and Steven's trucks at the event Friday night, we were late getting there because they screwed up our hotel rooms but did make it. Maybe we'll see you next time.

I finally got around to cleaning up the bed floor. Gave it a acid wash. I used Ospho and a brass bristle brush, scrubbed it good and neutralized it right away with water. It's amazing how much paint was hiding under all those rust stains.

Your truck is so cool. The coolest thing is you guys have such a good group of friends that work together on your projects. I'll be through Natchitoches Thursday around 10 or 11 am. Just bring Gringo's truck so I can drive it around the block! Lol

I've been meaning to post this for awhile. I found a really good used sliding rear window, thought I would give it a try. It's been years since I've had one of these.

The truck really came out great. I have given up on having a perfect truck, so I always really enjoy seeing somebody else's approach to turning something beat up into something nice without fixing or replacing everything, all new paint, etc. Like the rear slider! Looked back through your thread and found this picture. I wondered if you could point me where to get one of these multi-sized cup holders, haha.

So what ended up being the cause of the Vintage Air unit not cooling properly?

Well it's still not for sure but Vintage Air told me to pull the temperature probe out a little at a time untill it pulled down colder and it seems to work. I ran the engine at 1200 rpm with a big fan blowing on it and eased the probe out a little at a time untill it pulled down to 40 degrees, it kicks out at about 46. They thought maybe the probe was shoved into the evaperator core too far. I put a dab of silicone on it to hold it. Doing my first road trip since I did this, this coming weekend so we'll see.

Re: “Castro” my new 72 build

Happy to report the Vintage Air is working nicely, the problem was the temperature probe was shoved into the evaporator coil too far. I made a hour long road trip to a car show this past weekend and had 42 degree air with the cruise control engaged and the stereo cranking. It was awesome!! I think I am ready for Power Tour.

Re: “Castro” my new 72 build

Good to hear Mike. I'll have to keep that in mind when I do the Vintage air on the 70.

I love what you did to your new truck, very sorry for your old truck(my biggest fear for my truck). I was wonder what headers where you using, I currently have Hooker long tube angle plug headers, and I do not like how low they hang down from the frame. Do yours hang low and can you use them with angle plugs and a sbc 400?

Thanks for the kind words. I have a big block so no you could not use my headers with your sbc. They are for a Chevelle and they tuck up high. 2455 Hooker. I'm sure some of the guys are running car headers so you may do a search here and find out what to use.
