The $200 70' GMC...
Sometimes in life (at least for myself) things just work out for the best...
I'll start with a short backstory....was on the search for a 73-80 GMC 3/4 ton 4wd 4spd longbox. Sure enough find one a boat ride away...contact seller, speak to him ask to send me detailed photos. Sends photos, I call him back, I tell him I'm interested and will send a deposit via e transfer to him on Monday...well without going into all the fine details he shoots me a text a day later saying he sold the truck......guess he couldn't wait a day. So now I'm a little PO (that doesn't stand for previous owner)...haha. Exhaust all my leads on the usual buy & sell sites craigslist, kijji,ect,ect....it's getting late, so I decide to try Auto trader a site that I never check out....Low and behold I find an add that was posted earlier that day, it's around 1:30-2:00 am in the morning now and I'm trying my hardest not to call the seller.... Around 8am I call the seller, sure enough still for sale but tells me he has had 4 callers before me. Oh I failed to mention he was also a boat ride away, told him would call back in 10 min. Frantically I call everyone that might have someone in the sellers neck of the woods....nothing... call the feller back and tell him I give him my word I will take it. Just need to figure out a truck & trailer to haul back. Seller says your word is good with me and will consider it sold......2 hours later had a buddy on route the next day to the island picking it up for me..... Sure is nice in today's world that giving your word is still solid.... Behold.....the $200 GMC......... http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psrnttzk7x.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pstkytt4ly.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psachs4xwn.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psnul7vxg6.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psgonyi8gl.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9yq0uici.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psyt8ikc0p.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psh8x4xkgx.jpg |

Plans are as follows...2wd to 4wd, auto to manual, 6'' lift 35s. Picked up a donor truck 71' Chev 3/4 ton 4wd, manual, 4'' lift, with another set of F/R diffs 8 lug D44 14B FF. Also got a good deal on this $600
Hauling the donor home http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psieifasa2.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psazp9ehrz.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5virsrrl.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psup73polg.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pspv3kr0ot.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psi1gqbgkr.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psrmayxobi.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psc2uwfhgw.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psito09rp1.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psbgmhjbwh.jpg |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Nice score. That may just be the deal of the century.
|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Tow hooks even!!
|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Man for $200 you scored!
|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
I am so jealous, happy for you,ha ha, what a steal on both rigs!!!! the gmc is so clean, and the donor truck was the perfect truck! sm465/205 tcase, big blue hubs, and tow hooks,I think you hit the jackpot!!! and it runs! can't wait to see it finished, I love K20's, especially '67-'72.I guess it was a blessing that you didn't end up with the '74-'80 that you originally wanted,I have both, but really prefer and love my '72 K20

Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Are you sure you want to tear the GMC apart? I really like what your plans are with the two, but dang that thing is nice. It cleaned up great.

The frame off the donor will get stripped down, sandblasted, epoxied prime & painted. Will replace the body mounts, brake & fuel lines. One thing I forgot to add was the GMC came with BNIB front & rear chrome bumpers from LMC. Found a receipt in the box for the front bumper for $189....so i figure I bought the front bumper and got a truck & rear bumper for free...... |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
You probably don't feel guilty about the bumpers either? just kidding, maybe you should buy a lottery ticket, you are so lucky right now!!!
|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
You gotta be kidding me!!!!! Never seen such a score on the forum. Even the wheels are good ones. Wow! It may never get this good again. Enjoy it!
Really nice truck. Really good donor. Really nice day! Chris |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...

|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...

|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...

So I need some input from you fellers....should I keep the factory diffs or swap them to the D44/14FF that also came with the donor. I know I will have to move the rear perches in on the 14B. This truck will be used for light off road, camping, some towing.... would like to run X over steering but do not have flat top knuckles on the factory set. Thoughts??? Oh and a pic of the bumpers....like it couldn't get any better... http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pswpjmds0e.jpg |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Nice truck you are putting together. IMO I would keep the stock diffs especially since the front still has the spicer hubs.
|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
You lucky rascal ,CONGRATS .
|
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Unless the axles in the truck now are wore out or not geared the way you want I would run the ones in it. Those old Eatons are very tough plus the cool factor of original. If you do change them out the blue lock outs will sell very fast.

Re: The $200 70' GMC...
I am soooooo envious right now the GMC is the same color combo of my first truck wish I wasn't so stupid back in the day 70 GMC 2wd swb but nooo I had to have a 4x4
Looks like your living right! We have always said that the bronze color has something to it as most are not nearly as rusty as other colors Congratulations man cant wait to see it finished |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
It's just rust colored to begin with! Actually, it's one of my favorite colors for these trucks.

Re: The $200 70' GMC...

Pulled the tires of the rims due to the fact I'm going to turn them around to have the raised white letters showing....some dig it....some don't...me I just like the look. So I figure while tires off good time to put in a little elbow grease and polish up the wheels. On the last photo, spent a couple of minutes with the mother's power ball & metal polish......think they'll shine up real nice. http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5x22wehl.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pshpmsq9gm.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pshvinj3ap.jpg |

on hold for a bit. Well nothing exciting to really post. Pulled the motor/tran/tc today. Wanted to strip frame down and get it over to the sandblaster.....but that didn't happen. Was a nice day today after many days of rain around here. Spent some time at the shop then the rest of day working around the house. Couple pics of today's progress...always nice when you can borrow the neighbours forklift... Last two pics are a before/after of a 72 GMC I did for a customer last year. The white was from a Mercedes & orange was from Audi. http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psleigjqmv.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psdyjfq5ux.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psvf2oxhld.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6e49b91b.jpg |

Myself & a buddy went in on a car trailer, to save money from all tow bills. Ended up driving from one side of the Island to the other. Bought trailer in Crofton then headed to Victoria (all that are familiar with these areas) to pick up a 71 Burb 2wd for a buddy...already putting trailer to work. Ended up missing 3:00 ferry, 5:00 was full, ended up getting on the 7....made for a very long day BUT worth it. http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psl4ymm60h.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8dkcabou.jpg |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Frame back from the sandblaster. Sent it in Saturday morning back the same day, always nice...
Into the booth for some epoxy and paint. http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psjftuvxez.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psaxyc4hrw.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pslkqholui.jpg |

Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Time for a small update....been busy with customers projects and no time to work on my own...So I made an exception, it's may long weekend and I'm finally making some progress.
Had a custom 6'' lift made from Carrier Spring, all spring no blocks. Took my axles in to get sandblasted, got them back, epoxy prime and painted. New u bolts made up and painted. Started assembly on the frame, got my rims shined up and my raised white letters showing on my tires. Should have a rolling chassis by tomorrow.....:metal:...and onto the photos... http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psdkb0nimy.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8aej71nt.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psb8wrh5h6.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psfoy22uhr.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psxyjmweba.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pswunnooky.jpg http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pstlrfoqwv.jpg |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Nice stuff.
I like those weld wheel rims. Too bad they are 16.5s. I just bought some new Eagle alloy 058s 16x10 to relpace my 16.5x9.75 American Racing Outlaws(look like centerlines) http://images.aewheel.com/images/whe...e_std_3001.png |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Why did you remove the rear spring perches?
What kind of epoxy primer and what kind of black paint did you use? I see its Nason brand looks like |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
Quote:
The epoxy i'm using is Nason, the black is Valspar flat black, I'm thinning the black 10% to spray it through the gun eaiser. http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psph6xi70j.jpg |
Re: The $200 70' GMC...
It's been a productive day......too bad I will probably not be able to touch it for another 2-3 weeks.........
