Longbed to shortbed conversion

I want a shortbed c10 but they're so expensive. i am thinking about getting a longbed than having it converted to a short bed. Someone to cut the frame and bed and weld it all back together. How much would this cost me? Does anyone know where i could get this done, I live in costa mesa, Ca?

Re: Longbed to shortbed conversion

Keep looking for a short bed truck. If your gonna have it done you can buy a short for the money difference it is gonna cost to change. If your gonna have some body cut down a bed as apposed to buying a bed you looking a large money there too the job is not all that part intensive as you can tell, it is labor intensive as he??. I own a body shop I see your new here so welcome to the site. I rebuild wrecks [late model] trucks and SUV's for a living, and restore old muscle cars and old trucks for fun. I have two trucks that are long that I am building back as shorts but I am not cutting them, frame or bed. One reason is I don't I don't have that kind of time to do all the metal work to make the 10 cuts and welds on the bed and the 4 that the frame take are no biggie but I replaced both frame and bed with used stuff that the condition was such that it was in my favor to use. How handy are you? I just finished mine. Ended up cutting Down my bed which wasn't that difficult. Found a shortbed frame for $400 and paid someone to swap everything over.

Re: Longbed to shortbed conversion

The shortbeds are out there the lwb trucks that have made it this far deserve to stay lwb trucks.
And like above if you need somebody else to do it the cost of the conversion will most likely end up costing more than if you just bought a shortbed in the first place.(depending on what you buy)

Re: Longbed to shortbed conversion

This debate will rage on forever , long bed trucks and four door cars are or at least they were usefull vehicles that's why they were made but today older cars and trucks are toys and everybody wants them for the way they look , they are some longbed trucks that are collectable the longhorn models with a lot of optiions and some of the custom campers with lots of options but for the most part people like short bed trucks and two door cars , they are some great threads on here that show you how to cut down a longbed and do it correctly , good luck !

P.S. look for a solid rust free long bed you have already figured out that longbeds are a 10th of the price of a short bed now focus on condition you will see that you can find long beds in great shape they were just better taken care of and had older responsible owners ,,,

While it is a labor intensive project they can turn out nice. But to pay somebody to do it...cheaper to buy another truck if it's done right.

Re: Longbed to shortbed conversion

I like everybody's post but I think it could be worth it to cut the frame a guy by my house is selling his long bed in very good condition for $2,800, the shop by my house will charge me a 1,000 to cut the frame and do all the other extra that needs to be done ,to buy a bed will run you about another $1,800 everything included. To get it put on is included in the $1,000 price.so for about 6-7 k you can have a short bed yeah you can probably find a shortbed for about 10 grand the cheapest but good luck.I have a 70 c20 that I plan on doing this to .

I'm in LA and search for months for a short bed I ended up buying a conversion from a guy in Arizona. He buys decent long beds and converts them. He's done a bunch of them. I have had no issues with the ride or fit or anything. Saved a bunch of money compared to an original swb. He did the 5 lug conversion, pb, ps,frame and engine painted, new bed sides, and rockers. Just enough to put my personal touch on it now. Still have a ways to go to finish it but getting there. I had it shipped from there for about $300. Probably saved myself 3k from an original swb in the same condition.

This guy is funny!

My rule of thumb.... Any two wheel drive truck or rocking a lowering kit looks better in the short bed fashion, this goes for many generations of Chevy truck. 4x4 stock height and lifted trucks pull off the long bed look better IMO.

Aren't you supposed to also shorten the frame on the long to short conversion. This is weird looking with the rear wheel at the tailgate. Something just looks wrong on this truck. It's paint is awesome, but I can't get over the placement of the rear wheels.

Re: Longbed to shortbed conversion

Frame is 12 inches shorter. The difference is just in front of the rear suspension control arm mount cross member. Suspension components are the same, short or long wheelbase.

Re: Longbed to shortbed conversion

My question is this; as I am new to the 67-72 Chevy/GMC truck I don't want to cut up something that might be valuable. I am buying a 71 long bed step side, is this something that should be left alone or are there many of these trucks around so it won't matter?

Equating long bed trucks to a 4 door car is about as ridiculous a statement that can be made in the classic truck hobby.
The reality of value and desireability is utterly different...this site proves that out every day.
Try again...

Just type in Key words like Longbed Stepside, Long bed Step, Longbed production numbers, Longbed's produced, ect.also search for posts or threads to further refine. only draw back is having to wait a minute between searches.

If in good shape I wouldn't shorten it. Buy the shortbed and shorten the frame. You can swap your fenders onto it too. there is likely interest in it if you advertise and sell the long bed

Thanks for the help. I have not decided what I am going to do. I do know that if I don't use that bed I will preserve the entire bed and put it up on blocks until I decide what to do with it. Maybe it can help fund the build.
