New GE fridge project

I pulled this out of an old house yesterday. Starting to tear it down. Im planning on putting new insulation in it, taking a stab at painting it, and polishing all of the trim. Im thinking some shade of green, maybe red.
I guess I will have to check around to see if someone can repair it or replace some parts on it to make it work. Its in pretty good shape, two small dents, missing some racks, but not bad. Ive got some numbers, but Im not sure what year or model it is.
Anybody have any tips?

I don't know anything about fixing them. Maybe cheaper to find one that is functional? I got mine in 1994 and its running to this day.

Looks like a sweet BEER FRIDGE to me. Some pinstripes and such. Wonder if you can put the guts from a new fridge in something like that?

Hey Ellen. Do you want to quess where I got mine? Hint;) I used to work for them at the Federal Way store. The store was closed and It was in the break room. Dennis offered it to me and I've had it since.

Thats what I figured I would have to do anyway. I dont think it would be that hard, just cutting some copper lines and making it fit. But it would still need to be charged by someone.
Anyway, most of the wires were chewed in two my rats, so after guessing which ones went were and bypassing a switch, I got the compressor to kick on. It ran nice and quiet, but there is a tiny copper tube that has been chewed in two, so it has a leak. Maybe all it needs is for a new piece to be soldered in and to get charged with new refrigerant? I hope so.

Oh, and there is two reallllly old houses on some land my dad farms. This fridge came out of one house, and the other fridge has a really old Frigidaire by General Motors in it. It just has one door and a small freezer compartment inside. Its pretty cool too.

Thats an awesome fridge you have there n2billet. This first one is going to be a low budget build, probably with just spray paint. Not sure how good of a finish I can get. I've pretty much decided on a mint green color.

Here is the other fridge I may fix up later on down the road.

My dad had one similar to that when I was in high school. Just a bit older and one door.

I air brushed it to look like a big can of BUDWISER. It was the talk of the game room.

Might have a picture, but was like forever ago.

Heres the latest. I will have to wait a while until I try to get someone to get it to cool, but it looks good right now.

Looks great. How did you spray it?

Re: New GE fridge project

Thanks guys.
I got some paint mixed at the local paint shop and some hardener and used a Preval sprayer and a few cartridges of propellant. It worked OK, I probably could have used some more advice on how to use it. But I got all the paint and the sprayer for less than 60 bucks, so its not bad. I think I will be keeping my eye out for a good spray gun for future use though.

Those are sweet! I am setting a small kitchen up in my man cave and have a late 40's early 50's Tappan gas stove to go in it. I just picked up a set of period metal cabinet base and have located a one piece porcelin sink top for it. Now just to find a fridge.

I was in a gas station yesterday and they kept their nightcrawlers in the exact same model fridge as you have. I knew I had seen it somewhere. It was plain ol' white of course.

I found a local guy who I happen to work with also, talked to him about my fridge, and he talked like he would charge it and fix the copper line for free!
Can't beat that. So hopefully in a couple weeks it will be running.

I have a GM fridge out in the garage - converted to a keg-o-rater - I cleaned it up and plugged it in - has worked great since I got it - over 5 years ago.

Re: New GE fridge project

Well bad news on the fridge. I brought it over to a guy who does refrigeration work and he went to work on it. Got it all ready to pull a vacuum on it and fixed the broken tube. When he pulled a vacuum there was noise all around the freezer. The tubes wrapping around the outside of the freezer wall had lots of spots where the aluminum was corroding and pitting.
No practical way to repair it.
So now I have a liquor cabinet, maybe a pantry or something.

Here is my beer fridge a 1947 general electric. It was my wifes grandparents they bought it new, when her grandma passed away & her dad was gonna scrap it. I was horrified by that and jokingly told him i would come after it for free, he told me come get it. I removed shelving and drawers for transport and somehow never made there way back into it. Still have all the stuff and plan on restore in near future, for now is functional. Had to post, awesome thread. Glad to see i am not alone. :metal:

This is my mom with a fridge she painted sometime before I came along in 1975. She drew the outlines for the design, then she & her friends would paint a little at a time. I remember this fridge being in Grand-Dad's "pool house*" when I was a kid. It was always stocked with plenty of cokes for us kids. And Schlitz, Old Milwaukee, and Pabst Blue Ribbon for Grand-Dad, Dad, and Art. I always thought this was super cool - we never considered preserving or restoring it once it went bad. I really admire what you guys are doing!

* The "pool house" was just a little bar with a roof and some barstools. Today I think it would be called a Tiki Hut. But this was not near as classy.

Today I saw an in-process fridge restoration project at my cousin's powder-coat shop. It's not much to look at right now, but I'll snap some pictures if I get back over there before it's gone.
