Special Economy Truck?
1 Attachment(s)
I found this magazine ad (circa 1982) for a "Chevy V8 Special Economy Truck" that reportedly got 20 city and 28 hwy. Anyone know anything about this? First I thought it was a diesel, but the ad never mentions diesel or what size V8. Thought it was interesting.

Re: Special Economy Truck?
like any good promo add it lacks any specs.
probably the same setup my 86 had. 305, 700r4, 2.73. gutless wonder. |

Re: Special Economy Truck?
I don't think the new pick ups with the 5.3's and new 5 speed's hit 25 MPG... how on Earth could a less aerodynamic, heavier pick up do that?
|
Re: Special Economy Truck?
IDK, I barely get that out of my 4 cyl, 5 spd Nissan.
|
Re: Special Economy Truck?
That's pretty much my point. Take them numbers and divide by two and that's what the truth is......

Re: Special Economy Truck?
That ad looks familiar. :)

Re: Special Economy Truck?
At the bottom center of the Ad ---
"Your mileage May differ depending on speed, distance, weather. Mileage will be less in heavy city traffic. ACTUAL highway mileage LOWER." In other words, the big numbers are meaningless and irrelevant.... lol It all probably means 50MPH tops, drive on long stopless desert roads and do it while it's not raining. It has to have the light-duty everything on it. |

Re: Special Economy Truck?
There is a guy on another forum with a 2wd diesel burb getting 32mpg hwy. 6.2/700R4/3:08 or 2:9?
|
Re: Special Economy Truck?
back then the formula was different for calculating the MPG so its prolly that fancy old math that just dont add up
|
Re: Special Economy Truck?
Grandfather had an 86 Jimmy with 305 2.73 700R4... drove it highway at 55mph.... got 25pmg. That's what they meant.... I slow truck thats geared to the max and cant tow or haul....

Re: Special Economy Truck?
It may be gutless, but would be okay for cruising back and forth to work. IMO.

Re: Special Economy Truck?
Ive heard of this before. 305 2.73 rear end with the dodge 5 speed trans and the first attempt at electronic spark controll. Under perfect conditions its possible just not likely.

Re: Special Economy Truck?

My custom deluxe weights 3850 pounds empty on the local scrap yard scale. The 4.3/th350/2.73 drive line is perfect with an empty pickup in the mountains of NE PA. Gutless no way runs better than any 305 empty but put a 600 pound lawn mower in the bed and your wings get clipped. My fuel mileage is 17 between fill ups which equates to about 20 highway mpg.An overdrive 4 speed transmission would not be of much benefit in NE PA but if I was a flatlander I could easily achive 25 mpg highway with 4.3/700r4/2.73 combo. My 1992 had 3.08 gears from the factory with 4.3tbi and a 700r4 and I WAS getting 25 mpg highway with a 500 pound motorcycle in the bed b/4 the 4.10 swap. PS I just wanted to add that the smaller diameter of the tire the better the fuel mileage. I just went from 225/70/15 to 235/70/15 on the rear axle and at just a half inch taller the truck is working harder to rotate those slightly bigger tires. |
Re: Special Economy Truck?
that is the 6.2 diesel mag cover
|
Re: Special Economy Truck?
My old 83 305 could hit 18.5 with a nonlocking converter at 70 MPH. So yea, 20+ was possible @ 55 MPH. My ZZ4 hits 18.5 at 70 MPH. At 65, it goes up some. Not sure how much, but I can see the fuel gauge move slower. At 55-60 MPH, I could probably hit a little higher. Problem is I can't drive 55 MPH!! A diesel at 55 MPH, could make them numbers.

Re: Special Economy Truck?
Wowsers, old thread back from the dead. It has to be a diesel truck. I can pull 22-23 MPG's in my diesel with overdrive and 3:73 at 70 MPH. If I were to slow down I'm sure I could pull 25+.

Re: Special Economy Truck?
I can get 26 on the interstate, but 20 in the city is near impossible.
|
Re: Special Economy Truck?
I would've thought that add was for a diesel though
|
Re: Special Economy Truck?
First of all, when has any vehicle gotten the EPA rated MPG? It's always been a farse. Notice there's a big fat 20 in the middle of the page, not the 28. I believe it would be the diesel and they just aren't saying it. People weren't accommodating of the diesel vehicles back then. GM was the only one even offering a diesel prior to '83 and always the one one offering them in light duty trucks and SUVs.
As far as someone getting 32 mpg from a 6.2 in anything goes...people lie. Or maybe it's kinder to say "exaggerate". It just plain ain't happenin'. |
Re: Special Economy Truck?
i wish there was a big ten that could get that kind of mileage it would be the perfect truck:lol:
my 79 with a realy lean running 250 3 on the tree and 3.08's gets like 17 to the gallon |
Re: Special Economy Truck?
You guys got it all wrong... Those are real numbers, but they only sold those trucks in towns where all the streets ran down hill bothe ways!

Re: Special Economy Truck?
Red block 6.2 diesel. Completely gutless. But... 25mpg is doable on the highway with that engine. You need to keep close track of the RPMs and not lug it or over-rev...
I've gotten just over 22mpg with my 6.5L twice. My overall average is 19. My Mileage widget tells me I used 3394 gallons of fuel over the last 10 years and 65,440 miles. |

and I HAD a welded rear so my city/back road MPG was worse before I put an open carrier back in it. I guess it's the gearing. 700 junk R, NP208 junk that blows out of 2hi under hard breaking, and 3:08 ratios. I'm running stock suspension, stock tire size, every like 6-8 months I use fuel booster, I keep my side windows up as much as I can, and I downshift rather than give it more fuel. |
Re: Special Economy Truck?
My 87 R10 6.2/700R4/3.08's gets 23mpg average, mixed driving - 5 miles city, 14 miles highway, 16 miles country (a stop or turn every 3 miles or so), and 2 miles dirt.
It gets right around 28 at 56mph - just need to keep it in OD and the TCC locked up. BTW that's at 216, 000 miles, and as far as I can tell it's hasn't been rebuilt. |
Re: Special Economy Truck?
Some incredible mileage stories with 6.2s. Makes me wonder how two identical engines/drivetrains/tires can get such different (like 10mpg) mileage. My '85 Jimmy w/6.2/700r4/NP208/3.08s/235/75-15s got 22. With diesel torque you can actually keep your mileage when increasing to larger tires and going to lower gears. It now has 12.50/35 tires and 4.10s and still gets 22 mpg. So did my '91 6.2 Suburban with the same axles and tires. That's hwy mileage.

Re: Special Economy Truck?
It says it beats a competitors v8 by 47 horsepower. I don't think they could have been talking about a 6.2 diesel...
I'm not bashing them. I've driven 6.2 diesels over 200k miles and seen over 25 mpg a couple times. My 86 that I loved and drove the most would get 23 on the highway on a regular basis. My best guess is the "special economy truck" was a 305/2.73 geared truck with the manual OD trans (Its still a 4 speed by the way, not a 5 speed. It's a Chrysler/New Process A833 http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/...feature17.html) |

Re: Special Economy Truck?
Didn't GM offer a Lock up option in a TH350? Was thinking that they did in the mid 80's kinda odd... Seems I looked at a truck back 10-15 years ago that had a 6cyl / 350TH with a lock up and the guy said he got mid 20's just running around.
My 79 C-10 with a 5.3/60E/3.73 gear gets 20 on the highway. And I drive it like I am late all the time :) At least getting up to 70ish.. |
