1984 c10 barn find
5 Attachment(s)
I recently bought a 1984 chevy c10. It's more than that to me though, my grandfather bought this truck new in '84, and there's only been less than 500 kilometers put on it since he sold it a few years ago. I found it in a barn where it had been sitting for about 2 years, bought it and have started working on it. I plan to properly lower it (it has a flip kit in the back, but the front just has cut coils that pretty much fall out when it's jacked up), and start building an engine this winter (right now it has a 305 4bbl with nearly 250,000 on it).

I noticed the ball joint on the lower right control arm was welded in, so I went to a friend who I know has some parts. He did have southern control arms, they were still on a twisted up old frame he had. It also had basically new shocks and some brake bolts I needed. Then he offered to sell me the whole frame for $100, SCORE! But the frame was wrecked and I obviously wasn't putting the whole thing in the back of my truck. Soooo......

Got a new alternator and replaced the control arm bushings today. Can't afford to get drop spindles right now since I'm moving for work, so it's going back to stock height until spring

Winter's nearly over so it's finally time to get the truck in the garage and pick up where I left off. So far the whole front end is out of the truck and is now going back together with new and good used parts. Southern control arms, new ball joints, springs, and good used drop spindles. I'm having issues right now with clearance on the bump stop, trying to figure out the best solution. Any thoughts?
Attachment 1517941 Attachment 1517942 Attachment 1517943 This is one of the old upper control arms Attachment 1517944 I'm not very fond of cut springs myself, 1/2 or 1 coil isn't bad. The previous owner took 2 off, so I'm changing them Attachment 1517945 This is the clearance issue I was talking about, any advice? |

I kept working on the truck this weekend. I got all of my parts and got everything put together.
Attachment 1520845 But when I put it on the ground this happened.... Attachment 1520844 So I took it all back apart and gave the springs a quick trim. Attachment 1520846 It looks much better now. Attachment 1520843 I was hoping to get a drive out of it but the Nova Scotia weather had different plans and there's half a foot of snow in the yard :cuss: Maybe next weekend. |
Re: 1984 c10 barn find
It is great you were able to get back your grandpa's truck. It's looking good. I assume you are going back to the original color?
|
Re: 1984 c10 barn find
I might someday but the paint is staying as is for now, I'd like to make the engine bay, interior, and underneath look like new or better and leave the body the way it is or all grey primer, the original colour on it is grey.

Cool! I'll tag along.

So it's been awhile since I've posted anything. The truck has basically been my daily driver since my last post, I've put nearly 5000 km's on it so far and it works flawlessly. I'm likely going to do a c-notch in the very near future though (I cringe every time a hit a bump with it), and likely some airbags, just the ones you fill if you're going to haul something, I don't want to actually "bag it". Here's some pics I got since I started driving it.

I'm riding shotgun on this as well. Kool truck.

Re: 1984 c10 barn find
I thought I already posted this but I didn't, before I started driving it I put a new aluminum rad in it, new water pump, all new hoses, changed the power steering pump since it had the wrong one, new filters and changed the oil in the diff. Should be fairly reliable now.

Glad that you are renewing that truck. Was set for a slow deterioration in the barn there, but thankfully it was under cover. Nice work on your progress. |

Re: 1984 c10 barn find
I finally got around to doing the c-notch, I got tired of hearing the rear end hit the frame. I used a 1/4" thick 5" ID piece of pipe and cut it in half, then boxed in the frame with some 1/8" plate. Then I hit some bumps that caused it to bottom out before to try it out. It works perfect.

Cool that you were able to save your Grandpa's truck and that it's running as a reliable DD for you. Good work on the C notches. Wish I could weld.

Looking great.

Re: 1984 c10 barn find
Awesome job on the c notch . I never even thought of doing that I was going to order a kit but that looks like it worked out great. Thanks for the idea!

Haven't been here for awhile but I've got quite a bit done to the truck so I guess I'll give a quick update. Last summer this truck was my daily driver. It worked great but by the fall it was leaking oil badly. I thought about rebuilding the engine, but I got a better deal when a now good friend of mine gave me a low milage and tight 305 and helped me put it in the truck at his place. I can't remember why, but for some reason we ended up using one car manifold and one truck manifold, the engine was out of a 73 caprice I think. Anyway I upgraded to headers and duals with no crossover and put some thrush turbo mufflers and turn downs on it. Soon I'll be putting air shocks on the back, as well as a new gas tank and some general maintenance to get it back on the road. However I'm working on long shifts away from home this summer, and it's proving more and more difficult to get things done during the short periods I am home. I'll have pictures to come of the truck soon. In the meantime, I figured I'd post my other 2 non chevy projects just for fun. My 1956 pontiac star chief catalina and my 1975 vw van.

As promised, some pics of the new exhaust setup. I still have to change some of my plug wires for clearance and figure out what to do with my power steering pump bracket. I'm thinking of making a spacer for between the header and the backside of the bracket and using one of the factory manifold studs as shown. Anyone else have a solution?

I forgot to mention I got a more suitable tailgate too!
:chevy: instead of :gmc2: I think it looks a lot better, but I've always had a soft spot for tailgates that don't match the colour. |

Hey, I haven't posted on here for awhile, but stay tuned for a drivetrain swap. I plan on doing the actual swap next winter/spring, and I'll be gathering up parts and ideas as it gets closer to that time. First, an update. I haven't done much other than drive it since my last post. I found a stock radio with a cassette player and put that in, fixed a rotten rubber gas line, and I still have a leaking axle seal (I'm planning on swapping rear ends so I never bothered fixing it yet).
For the drivetrain swap I found a 2002 2500hd 2wd cclb, with a 6.0l and nv4500 5 speed. I'll be swapping that in during next winter spring, but I'd like some advice from people that have done similar swaps on the best places to get parts and what stock parts I can reuse (the computer for example, can the stock one just be flashed and reused?). I'll need mounts, wiring, headers, driveshaft, etc. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Here's a few pics of what will be the donor truck. Its currently my daily driver, that's why I'm waiting until next winter to start the swap. It used to be a DOT truck, and the interior is VERY dirty, but it works great and has lots of power, and it loves 3rd gear lol. It should work great in my c10! |
Re: 1984 c10 barn find
So here's my first round of questions. As I said I'm daily driving this truck so I can't really tear anything apart to get the answers myself, but some of you on here must know.
1. Did the make a clutch pedal assembly for c10's that used a slave cylinder setup, or were they all mechanical linkage? 2. Any recommendations for a speedometer setup? I've seen boxes that use the electrical output from the newer trans and have an electric motor that drives the speedo cable for the old speedometer, is this the best way to go? 3. Anyone know how many splines the output is on a 2wd 2002 Silverado HD with nv4500? Is there any chance I can reuse the driveshaft in my c10 with some modification? There's going to be more questions coming. Ideally I'd like to have as many parts ready as I can before the swap and have as much info going into this as I can. Also, aside from some accessory noise, the 6.0l and nv4500 are working great while I'm daily driving the 2500hd! |
Re: 1984 c10 barn find
Regarding the clutch, my 83 K20 has a hydraulic clutch from the factory.

On Thursday I learned a lesson about safety the hard way. I was working under my 3/4 ton truck when it fell off the jacks and pinned me under the frame. The frame wasn't touching the ground, the full weight of that corner of the truck was on me. The neighbors babysitter heard me yelling and got my fiance, Emily, out of the house. She jacked it up enough for me to get out. Things could've been alot worse, and I'm very very lucky to have walked away from that. I've got lots of pulled muscles and bruises, and some pinched nerves, but nothing permanent or broken. Keep in mind everyone, you never think it'll happen to you, but it can. Always take a minute to think about what you're doing when you get under a car. We all do it so often, we tend to forget just how dangerous it really is. Have fun, and be safe!

Re: 1984 c10 barn find
Glad you made it out with relatively minor injuries.
