Survivor ‘76 Crew Cab

This is a local truck that was with the original owner since December of 75. I stopped and expressed interest in it several years ago, was told it wasn’t for sale, but I left my contact info. Fast forward to a week back, I got a call, packed cash and battery and drove it home.

Photo from the day I stopped to ask about it:

Congratulations on hanging in there and finally getting the prize. 454 I presume?

It was bought for and spent its life as a vineyard truck. The benefit of that being it was only used between April and October, and was stored for the off season.

The glove box had a few treasures:

Sadly it wasn’t optioned with a 454. It’s a 350 4bbl with SM465. Its basic. No radio... no music man.

I’ve started cleaning up the original paint. So far I’ve just been doing it by hand with clay, polishing compound and wax. I’ll probably spend A few days on this. There’s a ton of painted metal.

Wow that’s a nice looking truck. The clay bar & polishing is making a huge difference. Can you show some pics of the interior?

Beautiful truck! You should consider yourself very lucky to have ended up with it.

Here’s a question. Was there a seat belt recall on these at some point? There was a box under the rear seat with a new seat belt receiver, hardware and install instructions. The box is stamped 1986.

very nice find... after a few years. curious, did it look pretty much the same as when you first inquired about it? the seats look amazing! I kinda like the pattern.

The day I stopped by it was in use - otherwise it was usually kept inside a metal pole building. So, yes, the same condition more or less.

I’m just outside of St Catharines - Niagara Region. The truck was sold new in St Catharines, and possibly the engine was built here, prior to final assembly in Baltimore.

Pulled the dash cluster tonite to address the high beam indicator - bulb was loose in the socket. These wires & connector in the photo below were tucked up behind the dash. Is this for a radio?

Your truck is great find, I really like that interior, I have never really seen one like that. As for your question on the connector, I unfortunately don't know, but would point you here (courtesy of hatzie) that has all the wiring diagrams and might help you locate what that connector is.

I’ve been through the fluids and greased the front end & slip yoke. None of the u joints have zerk fittings - assuming these are still the originals. I drove it around a bunch yesterday and today.

I’ve read conflicting info about whether or not hubcaps had to be optioned in 1976 - and What the difference was between getting painted caps versus polished.

So far I’ve tracked down 1 polished GMC hubcap of the 73-76 style. Anyone with any info or extra caps let me know...

There are some posted on a Facebook group, but they are pricey. Let me see what I can find.

There’s a few on eBay, but they tack on almost as much as the cost of the caps to ship to Canada.

Nice truck! Great find,

I tried to locate a set of hub caps for mine just like those. Found set for sale much rougher than mine. They wanted $495for a set of 4, thus I re did mine. The hub cap you have shown are identical to mine.

My guess is since your truck (it appears has no chrome trim) would have come with painted white hub caps.

I have attached my before and after photos of the hub caps.

Since it’s a GMC any part-specific parts generally are higher than the comparable Chevy part.

My guess was the chrome front bumper was related to the polished caps.

Wow. Your caps look good. I’d be happy with the before condition!

Re: Survivor ‘76 Crew Cab

Now that I think about it a little more I think the mirrors dictated the hubcaps

So if the mirrors are white the hub caps are supposed to be white (at least from the factory).

I had the truck parked outside and it got caught in an early snowfall. I hoped to drive it a bit more this fall, but they’ve salted the roads now. Away it goes until April.

Found a ‘76 GMC sales brochure. Here’s the interior page - for those interested in the upholstery- it’s base Sierra trim level. Neither seat in my truck folds.

I had to really hunt for this photo because base models in original condition are hard to find. Everyone will have an opinion on what to use, but IF there is no PO3 option on spid, it came with these painted hubcaps. This painted hubcap is specific to '73 thru '78 base models only. Yes up to '78 on base models, not up to '75 like the stainless version. The white wheels and white hubcaps and white front bumper will contrast great with the red body and white roof. Here is the correct cap on ebay, not mine https://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-1972-G....c100667.m2042 Seller does not have a clue on years used.

ACS 11-17-2019 09:08 PM

Re: Survivor ‘76 Crew Cab

Thanks for the photo. I don’t see P03 on my spid.

I didn’t know white caps were correct until 1978 for base models, that’s interesting. I’ve been spending a bunch of time looking around at various caps on eBay. I should probably go back and ask to look around the barn the truck was kept in - maybe they’re hiding in a corner.
