Looked at this Suburban today

I went and looked at this truck this afternoon. It isn't advertised anywhere. It has the usual Iowa rust and has been sitting for quite a few years. I screwed up the SPID pictures (all 3 of them) so I may have to go back and re- take that. I also couldn't get the hood up. The drivers side hinge is binding. It is only 7 miles from me. They want $1500 for it. It isn't in the best shape but I would say it is saveable.

This stepside pickup is in the same building.

Well worth $1500 in parts alone

Wow! Looks like a smoking deal for 1500. Lmk if you pass on it. It would be worth the drive for me

Would you look at that headliner. It's almost worth the asking price alone. Is it me or are those odd looking mirrors. Large arms with small mirrors.

Re: Looked at this Suburban today

Oh Boy!!! A big block suburban, auto trans, w/ AC...Take some WD40 with you when you retake the SPID picture, to get that hood open. The best thing about the suburban, it's a 71 or 72. Has disc brakes, that's a deal maker!!!

I will try to get over there and take a few more pictures this next week. Hopefully it will warm up a little and the wind will stop blowing. Another freeze warning for tonight.

I'm voting against any parting of a 72 big block, dual A/C, Custom Deluxe, tinted glass 3 row Suburban with full wheel covers. This wasn't a fleet truck nor was it a loss leader for the dealership (like mine). It has the hallmarks of a special order truck. And with a bit of fudging on the restoration this could be a beautiful Highlander.

Its a shame the parts are worth more than the whole when you consider it as it currently sits. I do agree with you, hopefully someone will get it that has always wanted a burb like this as a project.

Ive parted two perfectly decent for restore/fix up burbs. I compared them to another burb I had at the time that was highly optioned, but was actually a decent driver (until the engine horked lol). Lotta hindsight when playing with old cars and trucks.

Re: Looked at this Suburban today

I parted and scrapped a 71 440 R/T Challenger back in 85. It was badly so rusted you could look through the back of the door frames and see the rear wheels. Today it would be a $10,000 car. I paid $1000 for it as a running driver. Yanked the drive train, sold it along with some of the interior pieces, the hood, and drug the shell onto a trailer and scrapped it. Made $500 on the deal. Been regretting it for decades now.
I have some remorse issues.

If I was even 10 years younger, this would be a no brainer for me. I really miss my Suburban since I sold it.

X2 or 3 lol!

Buy her, get her running, fix the worst of the rust or dont, and drive her!! Perfect rigs are highly overrated!

Thats a nicely optioned 72! It must have been in covered storage for several years, that's the only way that headliner stays in that good of condition. I don't see any rust around the drip rail/windshield area either. Well worth the money.

I have been trying to get back over there now that I am able to slide underneath it and take some pictures. But so far that hasn't happened. I think the rain is going to quit this afternoon and the sun is going to come out so I will try and make it up there tomorrow morning....

Not much for rust up top but down lower it has some. It will be interesting to see what it looks like underneath.

The Suburban I had was a '71 version of this one, Medium Blue w/blue interior Custom Deluxe 402 with A/C. I had 8" rallyes with narrow wws on it. Wife's rig. I hope you get it

I bet you could get that running with a little work. Paint job and seat covers and you got a nice suburban there. Please don't part it out.

OK, I finally made it over to take a few more pictures, and got the hood open. The body mounts have some rust but they are not as bad as I thought they would be.

Engine & seats. Seats would be pretty nice with a good scrubbing and engine is complete with all the original goodies. Notice the chain hanging down in the engine pictures? That's why the hood wouldn't open....:)

Lot of good parts and I’m sure a lot worse have been restored.

So——- Whatcha thinking Leon?

I know that it’d be sitting in my driveway if it were a thousand or so miles closer and available. But, I’ve rarely been accused of good judgment
Costs nearly twice what I paid for mine but it sure has a lot more. Mine was a plain Jane 307 and a bolt action 3 speed. No air or power accessories. It does have a chain to hold the hood shut though. Mine came from a rough part of Portland. Lotsa battery thieves in your area?
Good luck, I’m sure whatever you do will be the correct answer for you-

Not too bad around here but someone lifted the power steering pump and brackets from the '67 stepside sitting beside it, so I'm betting that's why he chained it down.

Re: Looked at this Suburban today

I have to give a huge shout out to Leon, aka LockDoc. He turned me onto this burb and it was just about too late. I'm very glad we were able to get it purchased. Long story short apparently there was a guy at Goodguys telling a lot of people about this burb and the seller had one guy coming to look at it this weekend. Apparently there were a few others wanting to look at it as well. I got over there as soon as I could to buy it because I wanted it pretty bad. After we made the deal, I was standing in Leon's house talking to him and Pat. A friend of mine messaged me asking if I just bought a 72 blue suburban with a big block because his friend was going to look at it this weekend. He tried buying it from me but I told him sorry, we're keeping it. This is going to be momma's ride/family hauler.

Thanks Ryan. I'm glad you got it bought and glad I could help. It is at my place now sitting on the trailer.

Maybe Ryan will post some more pictures of it.

Leon,
I'm really glad the burb went to someone who can bring it back to life, instead of to a owner who might part it out.

Re: Looked at this Suburban today

I've been wanting a 67-72 suburban for a while. I actually had 2 a few years ago but for what ever reason my wife decided she hated the look of them so I sold them. (One was a really nice rust free Colorado shell I got from a member on here.) She's been wanting something old the entire family can fit in for a while. I found a 72 Coronet wagon, but she hated it too.

We were at Goodguys a couple of weeks back, and an ochre 71/72 burb went by us and she said I could live with that...... I would have liked to smash my thumb after hearing that.

I started looking for one and found a rusty one in Davenport. I called Leon to get an idea on what prices of parts were for these because I haven't been paying any attention on these. He then told me about this blue and white one and I decided the one in Davenport wasn't for me. :metal: Luckily no one got there before us to get it bought.

When you get ready to dive into the burban, start a build thread. I think you'd have a lot followers on it. I've done a few small things to my burban but nothing major yet since on it over a year but I'm get ready to.
