My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Everyone knows Monument Valley, I didn't camp inside the Navajo reservation, but...... Been wanting to take Blue Cloud camping. I prefer avoiding campgrounds, and would rather be under the stars than a roof. These are pictures from the Nikon camera, more will be posted from the phone. The pickup ran great, but the weather cut it short.
This is west of Tuba City: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1266a718_c.jpg This landmark is Elephant's Feet: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a2e9c96e_c.jpg Abandoned service station: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a3bc3920_c.jpg Forest Gump made this straight famous, which is north of Monument Valley. They paved pull-offs, and made it a 35 MPH zone so tourists won't get run over: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...475da503_c.jpg Day one campsite, in the Valley Of The Gods: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...67cc733f_c.jpg When I left in the morning, scouted other campsites: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5c5e7a36_c.jpg Campsites are just off the road, but there is no traffic at night: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...658a5dce_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...35862a84_c.jpg This is Moki Dugway, the highway is gravel in this section that goes up the cliff: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...57081702_c.jpg I took more videos of this part than pictures. Day two campsite, on Cedar Mesa at Muley Point. You can see Monument Valley beyond, about 20 miles as the Eagle flies: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5b301b28_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...315b1924_c.jpg The drive down Moki Dugway the next day: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...627442b4_c.jpg Sand Island is where rafters launch for going down the San Juan River. There are petroglyphs on the canyon wall, and a developed campground: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6137f030_c.jpg This is along Comb Ridge, there are petroglyphs on these rocks: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...300884ed_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8acef497_c.jpg Can camp at these locations, too windy today. For now skipping day three camp spot, pictures still need to be downloaded. I got woke up at 2:30AM by rain. So I left, in case it really came down didn't wish to get stuck! This is the north entrance to Wupatki Nat. Mon.: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3d240a9a_c.jpg This is Wukoki Pueblo: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...18b4010a_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...53f20158_c.jpg To avoid the headwind, I took Snebbley Hill Road, which is a historic road that is suited for Jeeps, but Blue Cloud did great! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...159132b5_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...21a1ae77_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...05b8dd1e_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fef8c0c1_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fa5ca038_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1fa57e69_c.jpg I was nice to take the old truck for a long drive, 674 miles. Thanks for looking. |

I am not after you to sell it to me , I just notice it being like the catalog business in Kansas City.. Now , I'm going to look at the photos again ..very nice,, looks a little snaky to me..

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Very striking scenery, those pics would make great picture postcards! (Do those even still exist?)
|
Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Great use of your truck! I really enjoyed the pictures. You've inspired me to do some camping too.

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Some nice pics there, thanks for posting. I've been through Monument Valley a few times but, never toured it like you have. I will definitely check it out more when I should go there again.

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Nice! I live about 2 hours from monument. My wife is Navajo and has family in tuba, so we are well acquainted with that side of the rez. Mexican hat is a pretty cool site too.

Such a cool way to see that incredible beauty. Thanks for taking the time to get the good pictures and to post them for us.

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Nice get away. In the '68 makes it all the better. That's good desert camping, under the stars and no one around. When it came to Snebbley Hill I thought, "That's a ways from Monument Valley", then I saw 674 miles. Not surprised. Thanks for sharing. I miss that area. Seeing your pictures not only brings back how it looked but the feel and smell of the air with the sense of vastness. Thanks!

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Hard to imagine that it was all underwater thousands of years ago and mammoths, camels, bison, horses, giant ground sloths, saber-tooth cats, dire wolves and whatever roamed that area.
Great pictures and a very interesting area of the world. |
Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley

The drive from here up thru teec nos pos, and Kayenta on to monument valley is a nice drive. Sometimes we go up thru aneth and come in that way. The mesas above the San Juan coming from aneth are pretty spectacular. They look like a rattle snake weaving around the river. |
Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Great photos and even greater trip. Jealous and love to see an old truck doing truck things.
Thanks for sharing. It's been a few years since I was out west and you are making me want to go again. |
Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley

Now I'm going to post the pictures taken with the iPhone. In some cases, it does better than the Nikon. There was something I wanted to take pictures of, here is only one shot: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...203f45db_c.jpg . . . . https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...71bf1d4b_c.jpg  One of my favorite views near Tuba City: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a17e4f3c_c.jpg I love the panorama feature: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6a9f8a61_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a988bb75_c.jpg Again Forest Gump tourist speed trap: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1262ea22_c.jpg Driving through Valley Of The Gods: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c6c85f4d_c.jpg Arrived at the first camp site: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...33775d7a_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fed0c751_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...642eb8b2_c.jpg I'll torture y'all with day 2 and 3 later. |
Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
I wouldn't call it torture. Love the pics!

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Question: What is your model/make of your tool box? Might you have a link? I didn't think you could get a toolbox with the in-bed spare tire! Love to have the width of it (since perhaps with my Rally Wheel it wouldn't fit).
Thanks! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c6c85f4d_c.jpg |
Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
Oh what a cool experience that had to be - rollin in an old truck, camping out of the back & beautiful scenery - thank you so much for sharing with us!

Back to first night camp, I was hoping for a sunset. The hood is ajar because I have a battery disconnect switch, last thing I needed was a wire that came loose and drains the battery. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...37bc7240_c.jpg Driving out..... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...83e4a53d_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f4fa245a_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2895f5a6_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...309140f8_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fdbae3db_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e6311b2c_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5ccd2bf3_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...462bd824_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5d8f60b0_c.jpg So that took awhile, all the stopping for pictures. I was thinking what a killer rally stage this road would make. Moki Dugway is next, do you see the road going up? https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2f86ac93_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2aaa2cc8_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...420f6fd2_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...85b7a7f6_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9e77358b_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0320c16f_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...eeda5581_c.jpg I recently saw a post on Fascistbook about this, half the people said they wouldn't drive this because it's scary. Try it in a 53 year old pickup with solid rear axle, and no booster drum brakes without ABS! |
Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
What great campsite over Monument Valley. I wondered about wind but I guess you lucked out. Boy, to think you have to go places like this just to get away from people offering to buy your truck . Washboard... I noticed the great example shown in the picture your dad took. You'd think they'd have fixed that by now

Re: My remote camp trip near Monument Valley
