Need replacement cam/lifters
 

Hello everyone, I'm in need of a replacement cam for my stock 350 in my 69 custom/20. I've had a tick on the passenger side of the head for over a year and now it's a lot louder. I've checked the valve lash and none of the lifters are collapsed. I'm about to start looking around and I'm just wondering what y'all would recommend. I'm not looking for anything crazy, just a good cam to bring my 350 back to life. Thanks.

That looks great. Thanks! Gotta love it when you wake up on Christmas morning and get a stuck lifter digging into a cam lobe...

Now I just have to get all the gaskets checked off.

Changing the cam might not cure the problem.
Could make it worse.
You could have a rocker stud pulling out.

also if a lobe is going bad you will see it in the distance the rocker arm travels through its arc compared to other rockers.

oil pressure is good?

Do a good inspection of the cam bearings if you don't take their wear seriously you could end up with a lot bigger bill later

A lot of "bad lifters and worn cams" have just turned out to be an exhaust leak...

I'd check your exhaust manifold/header gaskets first.

Before you pull the engine apart, find the actual problem. With valve cover off and engine running, you should be able to find which cylinder and rocker assembly the noise is coming from.
Grab each rocker with your fingers and your fingers will deaden the noise. The problem could be as simple as a chewed up pushrod tip.

Thanks everyone, I will be sure to check the movement on all the intake and exhaust valves. I know that its not an exhaust leak though because when adjusting the valves while running it got louder. Ill be sure to take a video! The engine was recently rebuilt a year ago to and this tick was there before that so I'm guessing the cam was not replaced like it should have.

Oil pressure is very good. Its pegged when cold and when fully warmed up its 3/4 pegged.

So it looks like all the movement on the rockers are good. I also tried holding each rocker arm and I didn't notice a difference in the noise.

So I took off all the rocker arms and pulled out all the pushrods and they all checked out and looked good. None of the lifters are collapsed and none of the studs pulled out. Could it be piston slap?.. Before the rebuild the engine was ran for about a week without oil and I caught it and put new oil in it. Before the rebuild it developed a small tick and even after the rebuild it still had it and was told it was the heat riser even though I found out my self that it is on the drivers side and the sound is on the passengers side....

I may have to take a video while I'm driving because that's when you really can hear it well.

Ran a week without oil???

It was about 6 days of driving back and forth from school and before the rebuild it was a great oil burner when going around a right corner(under side of the original intake manifold was cracked). For those 6 days of what I thought was a faulty oil pressure gauge(learned it was mechanical) turned out to be no oil.

Since I went through the valve train on the passenger side with the noise I'm thinking the crankshaft rod journals weren't looked at.

So I found this thread and it's the same of what I'm dealing with so I'm gonna look at the exhaust and see if tightening it does anything and if that does nothing then ill try oil through the carb and hopefully that will give me a sign.

Well it turns out that a couple exhaust manifold bolts were loose on both sides and I tightened them down and the sound is still there. Tried oil down the carb and same.

I guess its time to pull the engine. What engine stand and lift would you guys recommend?
