If I had to do it all over again I would have bought the 4150 model Part# 0-80783C also a Classic Holley. both have vacuum secondaries both have electric chokes but the 80783 already comes with the center hung float bowls with the dual inlet, the only thing it lacks is the sight glass in the fuel bowls, and it is made of heavy Zinc instead of light Aluminum, but still a better carb if price is a deciding factor look for these on eBay sold by Holley Performance as referbished you can get them for under $300 and they are done by the Holley guys / factory (dang it I just gave away my secret) here's a pic of the better 80783 4150 style carb |

just another reason to convert from the 4160 style carb to the 4150, this transfer tube that connects the fuel bowls is a PIA when changing jets or power valves and the rubber gaskets rip and tear

so my carb came with a spec sheet, which was wrong by the way, it said it came with the Purple vacuum secondary spring, well it didn't it had the plain one
moral of the story gentlemen, please check what you have installed don't trust no written word, ha ha Introducing the starting line up (from left to right, lightest to heaviest) Snow White, Short Yeller, Tall Yeller, Purple Rain, Plain Jane, Too Tall Brown, and Back in Black |

so we remove the appendage and remove the cap / lid
first we gotta remove the electric choke housing and slide that out of the way, PIA, the Greg does not like dependencies and prefers a nice isolated stand alone modular setup, in other words why does the electric choke have to block/hang off the vacuum pod |

now we thought we were too cool for school and that we could git er done on the carb on the truck, but turns out that rubber plunger/diaphraghm is so pesky that we decided to remove the entire vacuum pod and put the new lid on it on the work bench

and here it be in all its glory back on the carb back on the truck
be super careful with that microscopic clip washer that holds the push rod on the cam lever thingie it is practically invisible to the human eye, lol and my God this is the best single investment you can make to your Holley carb, it takes a 20 minute job (replacing springs) and cuts it down to 2 minutes (that includes chugging a beer) ha ha |

Gentlemen I've been sitting here agonizing over my chronic exhaust leaks and I think I see the problem, take a look at this picture, don't it look like the Hooker header ports don't match the location of the ports on the L31 Vortec cylinder head?
this is the passenger side head, can you see the black square outlines and how they are all shifted over to the right about 3/16ths of an inch, all four ports are like that, as if the header was bolted up a bit too much forward and not on center of the exhaust ports am I crazy or do you see it? |

the driver side is offset too but in this case it seems like this header sits about 1/8th of an inch too far back and needs to slide forward a bit for the holes to align
I don't think I can fix this by welding the bolt holes up and then re drilling them in their proper locations as it's a poor design and the holes will hit the pipes |

I think I'd widen the contact area with a MIG or TIG or even my Oxy Mapp torch then file or grind or mill for flat contact.

did I mention the wife will be out of town this weekend and I have already scheduled the next Dyno Test for Tuesday October 4th the year of our Lord 2016 so I am making a list of touch ups WE need to make to make Rusty Roller Ready
1. Fix Exhaust Leak (AGAIN) 2. Replace Magnaflow mufflers with just large resonators 3. Shorten #5 spark plug wire 4. Fix/calibrate one of the AFR Oxygen Sensors 5. Eliminate transmission noise by draining a bit of fluid 6. Finish hooking up license plate light 7. Maybe try a 1" carb spacer 8. something I forget 9. misc. 10. etc. |

I'm excited to see the dyno results. There are none near me and being without a trailer to take my truck kind of leaves me hung out to dry.

then I decided to cut up the flange into three separate pieces, this is an old Hot Rodder trick passed on from generation to generation by the spinning angle grinder
so first we mark the flange with a Sharpie with surgical precision, ha ha |

then I got bored of all the grinding and decided to get rid of the Old Man Magnaflow mufflers - they just had no bite and you know Rusty needs a proper Soundtrack
laying around we had our 9 inch resonators, a bit too small but it would be criminal not to give them a go mandatory stare and compare old vs new(ish) |
