Re: My new project 86 Silverado

moved my cab out of the carport, now can sand and prime the bottom over the next few days.
moved my frame back into the carport up on jackstands.
now i can stay out of the rain while i do the frame, and clean up frame parts.
will be redoing all the tie-rod ends now, and the installing the LCA's
pics tomorrow...

will be going flip kit, and 2.5" drop spindles in the front after may 1st.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

I am glad you said that about the tie rods. I need to go ahead and put all my new steering stuff on. Did you end up getting any drop springs or are you cutting yours down?

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

i'm going with Mcgaughy's drop spindles, and flip kit. not going to cut any springs, don't want the ride to suck

it appears that a truck 10 bolt has a larger pinion than a truck 12 bolt, a car 12 bolt is stronger than a truck 12 bolt. so basically a truck 10 bolt is built stronger than a truck 12 bolt...will have to keep researching to see if it is worth the swap. if the truck 12 bolt is weaker, then i'll keep my 10

anyone confirm this?

That's what they say. I've read the debate a few times and can't pick a side anymore. When will your engine be done? Looking forward to the dyno pull.

I'm going with my 10, if I bust it to pieces, i'll have the 12 as a backup plan :)

Joe@cmengines said 2-3 weeks for the engine...

frame is up and ready to be put back together

stripped all the dash foam off the dash panel.... i think i'm going to sand it down, and paint it so it looks like part of a cockpit panel or something and leave all the bullet holes in it....

finally got to where I can pull out my doors/fenders/bed etc.

LOL that's the thing. I was thinking of leaving all the holes there. like it's a lightened cockpit panel hehehehe
plenty of places for switches and lights :)

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

I for one would like to see that happen. I would prefer the holes filled if it were mine but its not. :) Either way I would like to see it finished out. That would probably be pretty cool.

Seriously, I think you might be on to something there. That would have never crossed my mind. The metal is pretty thin isn't it. I would be worried about it warping. Still a great idea. Do it!

i could weld some reinforcements underneath, it would stay rigid. i just thought it would be different. never seen one done like it before.

It's going to look awesome with whatever you decide to do! :metal: maybe weld some of the holes up, and leave a few to put some lights or guages in maybe?

that damn hood was a pain, i need to get some 40 grit paper cause 60 just didn't cut it good enough.
i'll be glad to get the front/rear suspension done so i can hang this cab...

I'm no expert but I kept my 10 bolt (mainly b/c of cost) and put Richmond 3:73 gears in it. The guy that did my rebuild told me I was better off w/the 10 vs. the 12 b/c the truck 10 is stronger. He's been running a truck 10 bolt in his 81 Firebird drag car for years w/out any issues.
Nice build so far, keep at it. Can't wait to see how the dash is going to turn out.

Good Lord, you've removed some material haven't you? How big a compressor do you have? Looks great, tuned in for the progress.

yeah man, but made the mistake of getting 60 grit DA paper--- took all day long :waah: , man I wish I would have had 40 grit :)

compressor is a porter cable 6hp 6.8 SCFM@90 psi 25 gallon tank - not a powerhouse but it will get the job done, i'll be spraying the whole truck with it too...
