Axle swap ?

My 67 Suburban has the stock six lug, are the five lug axles from 72 splined the same. Want to convert to five lug and disc's up front. Both are the 12 bolt rears.

67-69 rear diffs are narrower than the 70-72, so no luck on the 71-72 axle swap. You can have them redrilled,& use the 71-up drum. Another route would be to ordera set of axles from moser. i ordered a set for a buds nova.....$260 with studs & shipped. here is the link.... http://www.moserengineering.com/

Al, thanks for the info. What about swaping the whole rear any problems with that. What about shortening the axles and resplining would that work.

You could swap the complete diff, but the axles are biggest at the spline......then neck down.(cant respline)

I put 71 axles in my 69 housing. There was a gap with the stock 2" rear drums, but with 1974 drums (2-3/4"), the gap closed perfectly...

I better add the fact that this is not on the road yet, but the ebrake makes them engage. I don't have the hydraulics on yet.

you woulndt have much luck having shafts resplined, 12 botl shjafts are necked, the diameter changes, but then you would lose your C clip groove on shafts end if you had that doen anyways.

the 70's 11 5/32" x 2 3/4" drums trick is a good one, the shafts 70-81 shafts are same length, regardless of shoe drum size, but 70 are still 6 stud though

good luck

Fast, good to see ya back! I finally got those axles you sent me about a year ago into the 70 housing last weekend. They fit great. I just gotta bleed the brakes and I'm good to go.

Hotrodhenryj 11-08-2002 10:25 AM

OK, so the axles will fit, just need to get the drums from 73 up?

Thanks for all of the info guys as I hate the trial and error thing.

Slicker n sh$t ! 73 up has 2 different sized drums, you can find the wide set on the burbs, & some of the pickups.....
