Engine Identification

Hi,

I'v just bought a 56' chevy pickup shortbed and plan on rebuilding the engine and sprucing the truck up a little. I am having trouble identifying what inline 6 the truck has. I'v found the casting numbers (3994257 GM66) and checked certain databases but can still not identify it.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Re: Engine Identification

230 or 250 chevy six cylinder.
Look here for specifics.

Yep, with the points style distributor it should be 1974 or earlier and a 194, 230 or 250 with the short side covers.

If there is a suffix code on the engine number stamped into the pad on the side of the block by the distributor that may be the key to figuring out what it came out of.

I read somewhere that you can tell whether its a 230 or 250 by looking at the crank pulley or piston heads. I think I'll just pull off the valves to have a look.

Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated!

Re: Engine Identification

Copy down or get a good photo of the engine number that is stamped in the pad next to the distributor an I'll try to decode it.

The good thing is that most pieces interchange outside of some size specific parts.

The casting number sheets show that 8994256 is the casting number for most 292 blocks. Being one number off doesn't jive as your engine has the short side covers and the fuel pump is in front of the motor mount boss. Here is a shot of my 68 292 with the tall side covers and the fuel pump behind the right side motor mount.

Re: Engine Identification

I did find this link that shows a similar engine that was posted on here at one time. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1316317720

Hunting down a photo that engine compartment is a 65/66 Chevy Nova engine compartment with the spring towers.

I have a feeling that your engine code stamped in the pad on the block is going to match either the 1965 or 1966 engine codes listed here. http://www.novaresource.org/codes.htm
