Hello all,

I have been search and thinking for a while and need to build/buy a bumper/rack that can hold a 37/12.50. When i had smaller tires i ran with the OE tire inside thinking if I needed a spare a new 35/33 tire is mostly in stock. THe 37 Falkens not so common.

I have the barn doors and wanted it on the driver side so i could possibly open the pass door without messing with it. I can not locate much on the net. Some have a full width swing making the thin stick out real far when opened,,, not ideal.

Anyway, any pics or build treads would be great,

You probably need one of those swing out carriers that mounts into your trailer hitch receiver.

There's one I think the name is "rigid something" that's supposed to be really good and you can still pull a trailer. There was a review on the Casey LaDelle YT channel some time back.

Here is the idea I am coming up with.. NO way around having to open the carrier to get to the passenger door,, The 37 is too much even when on the driver side.

I am getting the support for the spindle off the receeiver frame and the OEM from under the bumper. I am thinking 3/16 angle and welded to the lower portion of the spindle housing. This mock up is the only way to not have the latch interfere with the barn door unless i go full width and that is to much to walk around when open or trying to open it in a parking lot.

I have vintage squarebody rear holders. These were a little different made by dualmatic and were dual in that one side held tire other side jerry can. These are nos not sure on 37 inch tire though

Update,

Since this thread has ~400 views I thought it might help someone venturing down this path and save them some headaches or give some ideas.

Making the brace behind the bumper is a headache but doable. For not much stuff under there,, what is there is in the way for every idea. I resorted to using a 2x2 and inserting it into my hitch receiver and will use multiple welded nuts that I can thread into to hold it in place and adjust height.

The spindle through the bumper is easy enough but the bumper does angle forward causing some tight issues underneath.

Which leads me to the latch. I will/would use some type of angle iron to support the latch and the barn door clears the latch hook but there is not much to screw the latch to. It would be nice to have solid iron for tha latch to catch but this tiny piece of the puzzle is a real pain.


It looks like removing the bumper and fabricating a 2x6 or 2x4 tube is the only solution.. I wanted the OE appearance and not giving up yet but it is starting to look like a mess.

There are aftermarket solutions if you want to save the work and spend the money.

Plus it would not be custom and permanent so you could move it to another vehicle.

I have been looking for a bolt on solution and there is not much for squarebodys.

I see a ton for jeeps/toyota etc.. Bluelake has one but not so sure of the design and it is pushing 2k in the end.

The receiver style is a compromise and they are 2k also.

I caved today and cut the OE bumper off. I am leand toward a 3.5x6" angle iron.. It covers the plastic filler so there is no gap under the doors and it is easy access to the rear for lights, painting and easier to fabricate.

It will reuse all the factory mounting brackets and holes.

This is my mess so far.

Later on this year (I hope) I am wanting to do the same to my 91. I'll probably have some 1/4'' plate folded up after I figure out exactly what I want. Keep the ideas coming. I already have the spindle and sleeve with the bearings sitting on my bench. Just gotta get the time to figure out a pattern and go with it. After that will be a front bumper with a warn 12k built into it. One thing I always seem to forget is a place to mount the license plate and lamp where it looks good

I picked up some material today... I used a 3.5x6x3/8 angle iron and some 3x1.5 rectangular tube.

Not counting the spindleand bearings I am in ~80$.

I will post a few more pics tomorrow...

With what you are fabricating ;)

I would factor in the weight of the stuff.:lol:

So, with that being said.

A 10 to 15 Degree angle is going to be required.

The Weight swinging in needs to be Factored in.

So I would suggest welding that Pipe at a 15 degree angle in line with the rear of the Bumper.

I have a millermatic and a hypertherm 30,,,, I like to use a straight edge and the plasma,, makes easy work of 3/8"

Update,

The bumper is cut and the spindle tack welded... This give you the idea.

THe ends need some filler but i will get the rest of the tire rack tacked up first and then weld all at one time...

Looks like you got it figured out, Hella stout! There are some stout ones available for combi vans and 4x4 vans that incorporate ladders for going up top, or racking for cans instead of a ladder.

I like your bumper.

I remember the 70's & 80's G series GM and E series Ford custom vans with the barn doors had spare carriers mounted on the hinges and the door skin so the tire swung with the door.

I am not happy with the latch,,, I would likt to find something like the RIgid latch so I can mount it to the horizontal 3x2 and fasten it to the bumper.

I put mine on the front. On my van I moved it to the inside of the door because the tire interfered with my trailer.

The more to passenger I move the tire the less clearance there is when opened. The way it is now it will open enought to allow the barn door to open past 90. Any more and it hits the side of the truck.

I still have not figured out how I want to latch it. I feel I made a few mistakes I will share.

I should have left the lower horizontal bar long until I was certain of the final lenght.

Originally I wanted to make it short enough so it did not interfer with the opposing door when it did does not have the tire on the rack.. I wont have the tire on there for running arounf town.

If had mouted the spindle on the driver side, and no tire, I want to be able to open the right door without touching the rack.

I dont feel the loop style latch mounted below the swing arm offered a lot of support. My other rack, (cj7/35) the latch is horizontal on the lower 2x3. Doiing it that way on the burb interfers with the barn doors.

Latch solution.

I went as simple and strong as possible. Using a 3x1 channel, I ran a 3/4 bolt through the channel retaining it with a slip collar and then welded a grade 8 nut to the rear of the bumper.

Extremely stout,, no movement.

I will look for a nice lever ot weld a T-bar to the bolt. It does take a few turns to release it but i think the trade off is worth it not coming undone.

I may incorporate a drop pin at the end to hold it closed when at a campsite or running around town with no weight.
