Got it home saturday and I even washed it for the first time in three years. The results of all this ended up at 3304 lbs without driver. 51.6 to 48.4 weight distribution. It lost a little over 200 lbs. Thanks to Brad Jones Race Cars.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

Good to see it back together Regan! I have been waiting to see what you were going to do, and it looks good.

Your weight bias is a little better than mine was last time I weighed it, but I also leveled the truck as it was about 3" higher in the rear. We'll see what that does for me.

I was surprised with the current 3300lbs with out you in it. I know you have an all steel front, with bumper, the air shifter stuff, I just thought it might be a little lighter than that. Last time out mine was 3200 with me in it. But then again, I have decided if it doesn't have a function, it doesn't belong in my truck. You truck is much cleaner than mine.

If I do a front end, I think I am going to do something similar to what is in the rear of mine. Cut the stock frame and go round tube. Chris Alston tubular frame rail kit with the rest of the complimenting parts. It's pre-engineered with bump and everything figured out. I'd imagine with CM rails vs factory, it would shave some extra weight.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

I was hoping to get it down to 3250 but it didnt happen. Dana 60 with solid 40 spline axles are heavy. Turbo 400 with 10" converter heavy. Big Duke heads weigh nearly as much as iron stockers. And of course the steel bumpers extra seat etc. The truck also has alot of tubing in it too.

Regan,

The performance of your truck at that weight is just a bit more uhhmm shall we say, impressive.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

Well the first outing went well. I raced the LODRS event at Thunder Road in Gilliam La this past weekend. I left Wednesday afternoon blew a trailer tire 40 miles out. One of my good friends and racing buddy Charlie Owens rescued me with a spare and an unmounted tire. I got back on the road and blew another in Waskom Tx. Pulled the tire off and limped with five tires to Flying J truck stop in Greenwood La. Got another tire mounted and hit the road again. Got five miles from the track and boom another one let go. I said to hell with it and limped to the track with rubber flying. A 130 mile trip took me 4 1/2 hours, it was beer time. Thursday morning we tried to figure out a way to fix the trailer but I decided I came to race so thats what Im doing. I got my chassis cert done and teched for the race then made three time trials. I tell ya 148 felt like 200 lol. I made some adjustments and felt like the truck was working well. Friday I had a four run reaction time average of .009 needless to say I was happy and confident I could be competitive. On to Sunday morning, I missed the tree and had a .037 light but my opponent went red. Second round I was .025 on the tree to my opponent's .030 light and I won the round. Third round I made some adjustments to shoot for a .010 to .012 light. I ran Tony Fuller third rd, I turned the top bulb on and he ran in and turned on both bulbs. I guess I let it get to me and got in too deep and it rocked on the transbrake. I went .005 red and he was .020 green. It was a round I could have won so I wasnt happy with myself. All in all though the truck did great. I put four tires on the trailer monday morning and came home. I have some videos and some cool Go Pro video coming soon.

Have to hate it when you have trouble just getting to the races, but it's always nice to get some runs in, good to see the truck is working well.

I was @ our local cruise joint here in Dallas (Kellers Burgers @ NW HWY/Abrams Rd) on Sat night & was BSing w/some buddies (go-fast truck guys) about 2014 Drag Week.

We were showing DW pics back & forth & I noticed one guy had pics of your truck from some race shots somewhere. I said I've been following the story of this truck for a while here on the site as I remembered it from years ago out @ the races (Super Chevy event @ The Motorplex or Houston Raceway). I told them about the recent front end updates & subsequent weight loss.

Time for a glass front bumper/hood now....

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

Regan.. trailer tires are like wives,, you ignore them and they just cost you money. I've gotten to replacing them every 5-6 years The damage to the trailer and the aggravation / danger of sitting on the side of the road with a flat just ain't worth it.

BUT,, a weekend of racing and the truck made it into the trailer under it's own power,,, Hell I'd put that one in the success column!

regan wilson 09-21-2014 04:35 PM

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

You're right Marv on the tires. These were three or four years old. The deal is the trailer sat for three years on in the same spot. The tread came off in squares.

I'm really glad you got to go racing again. Sounds like a good day at the track.
On the tires. I've had the same dryrot problem in the past. Discount Tires offers a warranty based on tread depth not age or miles (or at least did). Might see if they still do. That way no matter how old they are, they are warranted.

I picked up the bullet for my truck Sunday. I so can't wait to get mine back to the track.

I am glad you had a good outing. I blew 3 tires on my enclosed on the last trip out and I blew the motor in the drag truck. I will have 16 inch on my next enclosed. I may even run a load range e truck tire.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

I've got the motor out of the truck and stripped down to the rotating assembly. I sent one head to Hairy Heads in Ohio to see if they might find some power in them. I found that I have a piston to valve issue on the right bank due to piston rock. I will fix that without taking the short block apart. The motor leaked down 3% on 6 holes and 4% on 2 that is very good especially for an aluminum block. I found that it only has 200 lbs of cranking compression so we will grind a cam that will work better to increase compression. I also have fuel delivery issues that have been effecting hp. I need to rebuild my shocks .etc etc etc. Hopefully with the time frame I have I can get all this done and afford it also.

Right and our first race is March 6th in Baytown. I'm kinda getting hung out waiting on lifters and a camshaft right now. That may be two more weeks! I've had my shocks rebuilt and put new springs on them. I need new slicks but I may wait on that. I just need some hard parts so I can get it back together. It seems like its like this most of the time for me. In 2010 my first race was in Belle Rose La. I had to go down there (6 1/2 hour drive) untested because I was waiting on parts. Some things change some things remain the same...lol

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

Igot the motor back in a week before we were supposed to be in Houston March 6th. Got it running and found water in the #3 cylinder. I had changed to Cometic gaskets but thought it was the head. Sent it to Brodix and they couldnt make it leak. So I changed to a Fel Pro Composite and it still leaked. Ran some Delco block sealer through it and it stopped. We will see what happens I will be in Ennis April 17th.

Also the port work picked up the heads 20 to 40 cfm across the board. It was really good at mid lift. The cam is a little bigger with 917 lift and ground on 114 and set up at 110. The cranking compression is 255 now. It sounds different than before, it just kinda growls and chirps at the same time. Its pretty salty ! The throttle response is awesome.

On another, note last Saturday March 28th was the 30th anniversary of my first race win in the truck. The trophy has the date on it. I'm gettin old. lol

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

Con grates on the 30 year anniversary . ,917 lift! I bet it sounds mean . Thanks for the update , I know for sure the amount of work it takes to get to and from races much less win . Probably should set mine up to run Hotrod/Super Street .

Texas Motorplex this weekend 4-17 to 4-20! I guess I'll find out if all these changes are gonna work for me. Hopefully no water leaks.

Hey Regan,
Had a racer friend w/ similar trailer tire experience. He now runs his tires 4 years, and they come off, regardless of how they look.
Most companies that recap tires will not cap a tire older than 4 years old. Tire knowledge is part of my job. Knowing how old your tires are is a good thing, for any vehicle.
Hope you make it to Oklahoma again soon!!! The Tulsa divisional race is weekend of June 13, 14.
Thanks again for show me your pickup at Noble last fall!!!
Jeff

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

I havent given an update becuase it was not a good trip. I had fuel system issues from the start. Finally got it down the track on 3.5 pounds of fuel pressure and it was 11.00 at 149.50. The air conditions and the wind were horrible fri and sat but all the passes I made were good mph. Sunday first round I screwed it up and gave the stripe up by 15 thousands and lost first round. But it looked to have been on a 152 mph pass. My generator gave me hell all weekend. It had an exuast valve guide that gave up on me. Now I have to replace a head on my Onan 7000 generator. Its never ending!

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime

LOL Hotrod... Your not going to do that to me all season are you? Ok heres the update since you ask. I just got my generator parts this week. Put a new cylinder head on yesterday but still have an hour or so of work to finish. Also they didnt send my manifold gaskets so I have to find some. They postponed the Belle Rose La race till July becuase of rain. I am supposed to be going to Tulsa next week but Im not sure I can go. All the sudden my old trusty Goat decided to develop an exhaust manifold leak. Also I have an equipment install thats going to take all day wednesday next week(when I should be loading up). On top of that Houston is the week after on June 19th. I really dont have the time to do both becuase its just too much time away. It looks like the plan is Houston, Topeka(two races in one), Shreveport, and Noble Ok. That will only make six for the year but at least I will still have one to throw out(we only count five). See you in Houston for sure.
