Will gas prices mothball your truck?
 

Right now California gas prices are approaching 6 bucks/gal. Which makes the price of a day trip in my 15mpg small block powered truck cost a about 50 bucks. I believe we have yet to see the cost of diesel fuel really hit the store shelves but I think it surely will. I'm not rich but I used to think I've done pretty well for myself.
Now however, as I look at prices skyrocketing all around me the idea of burning up a 50 dollar bill in my '66 seems quite extravagant since my retirement savings are worth less money with evey passing day.
Most local cruise nite venues in my area disappeared in the pandemic never to return and my friends have pretty much parked their classic cars for economic reasons as well. What about you? Do you forsee a glut of classic cars hitting the market as gas heads for the 10 dollar mark? These trucks have recently achieved a market level which makes them a pretty decent investment, do you see that tide beginning to recede? Will you wait it it out? Or maybe like me, you're so pissed that you have thoughts of selling now while the gettin' is still good and bankrolling that cash for your future. It's becoming the elephant in the room and nobody is talking about it here.

I've been saying I need to park mine so I can start doing the rust repair, but have been enjoying it too much to stop driving it. Gas prices are definitely pushing me even more to start fixing the rust sooner rather than later

My truck is a tool. I use it when I need to do something that requires a truck. Putting gas in is a cost of using the tool. But is a fun tool to use! My 65 Impala and my 96 Impala SS will likely get a little less driving this summer, and I'll use my electric Caddy a bit more. However, for fun drives, it's tough to put a price on things when it comes to the old stuff.

My '61 GMC 5000 will be staying on the road. Aside from the usual truck shows and cruise nights, it gets used for moving equipment and hauling my stuff to tractor shows. Besides... the enjoyment driving that truck brings me, the thumbs up ya get tooling around, meeting people when you stop somewhere... makes it all worth it!

Hard times come and go. Wouldn't you rather have a focus that makes you happy, a hobby that brings enjoyment during this BS? Rather than just sit and sulk about it?

I will keep driving mine. But I don’t drive it anymore than once a week. I enjoy driving it, that is all that matters to me.

I just bought a used Hyundai Accent to daily drive instead of my $100/week '77 C10.

Not going to stop building the '61 though.

Being in my golden years, driving the '64 at 13 mpg is pricey. But as a previous poster said, the remarks and thumbs up brings a smile to my face. That's a whole lot better than listening to the news today.

My 60 is my weekend cruiser. Here in the bay area gas prices are nuts. My daily driver requires 91 octane so I am paying above $ 6.00! Still plan on driving the 60 on the weekend, just not going as far !!!

Converted to dollars, it costs $9.09 a gallon in Germany. The liter Super E10, 95 Oktan, €2.20 and rising.

Mine is a bakery delivery truck that is used daily for aprox 40 miles. It has certainly got out attention but as in most everything, peaks and valleys. The price will come down is 3 years.

But not before big oil makes back what they lost when the pandemic hit and oil hit $30 a barrel so they make it back on the rebound

My 65 is no worse on fuel (ls swap) than my 17 crew cab, I’m considering buying a rice burner to save some $ when my company tells us we have to come back to the office. Been very fortunate for two plus years working from home, has saved about 40k miles off my 17, not to mention the fuel costs….I’ll still drive my 65 for the fun of it!

Exxon reported Feb 1 that they had their best profit quarter ($9B) in 7 years. They've made their money back and then some. This rise in crude is 100% speculation. Not much has changed with demand and supply. Just government regulations that have the industry concerned.

No, but I was planning a engine swap anyways. The current engine in my truck was the best Performa parts of 2 engines with a cam swap for my Camaro. While it is in my truck now. I just drive it when less people are on the highway when I need to do a longer drive.

I will have fuel injection on its next motor no matter what. While my hwy mpg is amazing for the combo. The city mpg suffers due to the carb. I can't run part throttle leaner otherwise I end up too lean on the hwy.

Also my daily commute is less then 20 miles with shopping on the way home. I won't save enough with a small car to justify it.

Although I am hoping to pick up a crew cab dually cheap soon to replace my Durango as my DD.

I have always thought that Not having a Car or Truck Payment makes it a Lot easier to drive my TOYS!

Been through this before . Never stopped me from driving the Chevelle still won’t and the trucks get twice the mpg so I’ll be driving them too. Not as much or as far as before but they will be out and about

Just made it back from a 700 plus mile round trip ride to Emerald Coast Cruizin in Panama City, Florida. I'm gonna keep driving it when I want to....

I had cut back on using my 72, and my nova, awhile back, but mostly because of the influx of people that have moved into the area, in the last couple of years. I'm still barely into a rural area, but major development, has brought a lot of crazy drivers, and waaay to much traffic into the areas I have to travel through. my commute to work has doubled in time because of it, and the roads where I live are very curvy and it seems once or twice a week someone is in my lane, I'm seriously wanting to move away from here..as far as fuel cost goes, I bought a beater 94 honda civic a few years ago, to travel back and forth to work every day, it gets in the mid 30s on mpg and takes the wear and tear off of my other vehicles, and I drive the c10 and the nova on the weekend, or out for cruise ins..so I will continue to use them the same as I have been, I think the prices of gas will come back down in the future .either way I'm not going to stop using them

...ya know, it really bugs the heck out of me when some posters feel it necessary to reply with a whole dang novel that takes up two pages in response to some simple question. :mad:

I usually just skip over their post and go on to the next.

And no, it is not going to make much difference to me because I'm retired and never seem to venture too far away from the big screen HDTV these days, but it may actually motivate me to finally get off my dead bottom and do a brake job on my Bug...well maybe. :o

Having a child that can't ride the motorcycles, no gas will not mothball my trucks. Not by choice though, just means I'm going to start burning savings [literally] as I was already on the edge of breaking even every month before gas went up. Sucks.
