Stay bagged or go static again

Well I've been debating on removing my bag setup just to get more road coarse type suspension under it. I will probably go tubular up front and sway bars fr/rear and 4-6 drop. My plan is 17" wheels and a good shock package and go more twards the touring side of things. Help me make up my mind. I plan to drive the thing alot once it's done and ac/fuel injection are in the future.. I should be able to get enough out of my air system to fund my static springs/shocks/a arms... Help a brotha out!!!

I'd buy another truck to do all that to. You would miss the adjustability, IMHO

you can make it handle just as good with bags (with the right set-up of course) as with springs and you would still have a better ride quality

Just not real happy with the bag setup. It was given to me and I really wasn't keen on the idea..

I'm not made of money or I would... I'm actually looking at buying my old truck back and swapping all the air stuff onto it. Rat rod it with a ls motor and airride and blast it and paint flat carnival red...

I know but I'm a simple guy and that's why I think I liked my static drop. I'm still on the fence. I should've listen to my gut and went with smaller air lines because I don't like how fast 1/2" line is. Gotta slow the front down..

I like the reliability of a static setup if I,m to drive it alot. I have one with bags and one without but if I go on the hiway I always take the static one

It sounds to me like you need to invest some time in to making your current system right. Start by adding flow control on your dump valves so you can adjust your system properly. Most guys dislike the speed and lack of control of 1/2" lines and end up with regulators of some sort.

After that, see what you can do to make the truck handle with the air suspension. If you change to better tires, lighter wheels, sway bars, and improved shocks, you will get better handling. If you still feel a static drop is what you want after those mods, you won't have to change anything to go static.

If it were me I would consider 18's or 20's over 17's. They look better (IMO) and the cost of tires and available sizes are much better.

I do alot of highway driving and I like the ride of air But I have to fab my front shock mounts and sway bar mounts.. I don't know. I think gonna see about my ok truck... It's rough but it will serve its purpose.. I've always had static drops so I guess I'm just a simple man. Still on the fence...

Re: Stay bagged or go static again

Well anything bigger than 18's forget it. I don't like the look of a hot wheels car.. Not my thing... I've got some check valves coming but I just need to slow everything down on the front. As far as away bars I will have to fabricate arm mounts because I built the arms without a mount for one. In my area 17's being original equipment alot of stores carry the size I want in stock and I know they will fit my current setup and not rub.. I just wish I would've stayed static for a while. Oh well I guess I should've thought about the line size alittle more..

since you have everything already I'd rather just mod but get control arms that will let you run a higher pressure keeping the same height add in some sway bars...

if it is double duty truck i'd even go as far as make a bottom cup for the bad so you can run it at a better pressure when you're not running on the truck.. some adjustable shocks and you're set.

My lower control arms are modified stock with a big cup on the bottom of them. Check my build... I'm gonna try something's before I scrap the air.

If it was me getting front stocks and that swat bar is a must both well smooth out the ride more and handle better,If you fix that and slow down the dump valves you'll be happier with the truck i bet.

I'm probably going to do the exact same thing.

Right, if you don't have shocks, that's a big part of your problem. I drive my truck on the highway, at speed, low (1" off the ground") no scrubbing, and fully lifted up (stock height) with absolutely no problems. A well designed and installed system will rival a static system in drivability, and definitely in comfort and adjustability.

I don't have problems with bouncing or anything it's just I was expecting a different outcome I guess. I need to slow it down (lift) and get the front/rear sway bars on then I might change my mind. I'm just a simple person and with static you don't have to mess with anything just jump in and drive... Guess that's what I'm used to. Maybe the slower system will grow on me..

Re: Stay bagged or go static again

yes, if you have the slower system, you will not only enjoy the comfort level, but if you ever get in a situation where you need to be higher for whatever reason, it is there. I mean, you can always leave the truck at the height you like with air, and tweak it every now and then, if the moving up and down is not what you want.

I'm a simple guy as well.... That's why my air pressure only changed when the truck would get loaded to the max w/cargo. The remainder of the time it was driven, the air psi was always the same & the ride height was always low.

If you want to go back to static drop, do it. But I'd correct what I have 1st before anything.

Re: Stay bagged or go static again

id say, if you like static, buy a bunch of good static parts and get some shocks that are the best length to run in their "sweet spot". get that thing as low as possible and drive it with no worries and no hassle (if you think it is now). if you worry about the air ride every time you get in it or its not riding like you want it....make it static and enjoy it, so you can drive it like you stole it. i'd also keep the air ride parts in case you go back to air or get another truck to make a rat rod

When you are ready to sell your air parts let me know. I can help a brother out if you decide to go static.
