Tot Roddin': Mid-MO Style

Back in the fall, I got the urge to build a custom pedal car. So I set out to locate an original paint pedal car to start as my foundation for this build. I posted an ad on Craigslist and followed a few deadend roads until I came across an all original (except for the seat) AMF Skylark.

Early in the fall I tinkered with it a bit, looking for some inspiration and I think I found it. :)

After sitting in the garage all winter being neglected and the birth of our first on 2/26 (more info to come about this :)), it was time to give it a good clean up (remove the seat) and then get to work. :D

I contacted a couple different people to see if they could help me come up with something (grimss and kyull67) and kyull67 had a free weekend to help me with this project so we headed out on 4/2 to build a custom cruiser for the little one.

As most already know, when I go out to do something it's never a normal process and the same went for this little project. Since I would like to use the pedal car as a pedal car in the future, I didn't want to modify the original suspension pieces, nor did I want to hack up such a clean original cruiser. kyull67 was nice enough to take a day out of his busy schedule and allow us to come down to show off his welding skills. And, he even let me take a stab at welding, but fortunatley we didn't get any shots of those welds.

We started off building the main square piece and then built the front and rear from that point. The axles are all stationary and the car will be a "stroller" with eventually adding a push bar to the rear of the car.

So, here are a few shots of the frame work:

Time for final assembly of the body and frame.

And a few quick shots to look at our hard work first hand:

After we returned back to the house it was time to get a final shot before the sun went down on the day. I still have some things I want/need to do before it is fully operational, but that will come with time. I need to finish up the push bar and add flooring, etc.

A BIG thanks goes out to grimss for helping me get the concept together and to kyull67 for laying the welds to pull it all together.

Thanks a ton Ryan! He has been such an amazing addition to the family that we wouldn't know what to do without him now. I hope that you're little one is doing well.

Looks great. I want to see how you are going to do the push bar. He's going to love riding in it.

Sweet pedal car, I had one of those things back in the day. I will follow along with this one too. I like the new chassis.

Can't wait to see what you can come up with. One thing... you might want to talk with 67cheby... a kidillac would look good with your cadillac. :)

Thanks Matt!

I've got a "few" updates but not near what I figured I would by July. :)

I'll keep you guys posted when I actually have something worthwhile to post. I've been working on the floor and had to make minor adjustments due to the front wheels being shifted more towards the leftside of the frame (no biggie). Push bar, front wheel covers, and interior/support features and we're done.

We saw a 27t roadster munchkin hauler made from a steel wheel barrow tub at Good Guys and I want to build one so bad. I'll see if I can dig the pics up of it I shot with my crappy phone camera. LOL
