What color "white" for wheels?

I did a quick search but I came up dry...

What is the correct, or closest to, shade of white for my truck's steel wheels? I will be putting a set together soon, wanted to paint them before I mounted the rubber.

Oh yeah...looking to do this ala rattle can. Someday I will do it right with rest of truck, I need fast and accurate now. ;)

Thank you.

I used duplicolor white steel wheel paint from Kragen or Auto Zone. I don't know if this is the correct factory color, but it looks fine.

I used Rustoleum gloss white, pretty close to original look.

Look for this one. It is white with just a bit of blue in it. The guys on Chevytalk claim it is a perfect match.

Duplicolor Truck, Van & Suv # T174 White/Blue

Thanks

It's GM code #12. I think GM called it "frost white" but I've also seen it listed as "linen white". It's the same as WA-5111 used on some of the newer GM trucks as well.

Yes, the same shade of white was used on bumpers as well as some mirrors. And it was also available as an exterior color (common on many 2-tones).

I used some Nason Ful-Thane urethane mixed in GM code #12 to spray these wheels for Dad's 77

this is about what we came up with at the powder coater when faced with several options of white..

and I was informed that powder and liquid colors aren't necessarily the same..

so the factory white chevy wheel I brought for sample looked to have a skosh of blue in it as mentioned above..

the four of us agreed on Axalta Glacier White PFW500S9 comparing colors in clear daylight..

turned out pretty good, for my eyes anyway.. if I can remember I'll post some pictures with rubber mounted on them

Re: What color "white" for wheels?

I'll be using Frost White since my truck has that color under the trim line and on the roof. It appears that Frost White is available from automotivetouchup.com. However, this is a quote from their website when I looked up the paint: "AutomotiveTouchup paint products are custom mixed to perfectly match the color of your 1982 GMC All Models using a basecoat/clearcoat system just like factory specs." That little blurb there, doesn't inspire much confidence, since those trucks had single stage paint. I checked to see what DupliColor had to offer and their perfect match premium automotive paint line now consists of six colors that they call "universal"... it appears that they are out of the 'dupli'cating business or that their website navigating logic is not up to the task.

Another quick side note, if you are trying to match an existing color. I have two trucks that are painted colonial yellow. One is painted over a black primer and the other is painted over a white primer. It changes the color noticeably. So it is worth approximating the primer color before top-coating if trying to match. Not terribly important on wheels though.

Re: What color "white" for wheels?

^ good point on the matching factory colors, reminds me of something..

after I got home from dropping off wheels at powder coater I wanted to look up the color we chose.. I wasn't getting the warm fuzzy I was expecting regarding factory color names so I called Axalta to see what they had to say.. the territory rep called me back fairly quickly and we had a nice chat about powder coating :)

he explained that they are required to obtain permission from the manufacturers to use licensed names of color codes and the fees are steep.. and since there are so many colors and competitors is just isn't worth it to obtain all the credentials to name and advertise their products with reference manufacturer's color.codes..

of course larger companies may do this for certain brands or colors they can sell in volume to be profitable.. and I would imagine the company that made the actual paint for the OE would have some rights to use the factory codes.. but it's just not an economical option for every other paint company..

Re: What color "white" for wheels?

You wouldn't think white paint on wheels would be such a big deal but the correct shade is very important. I made the mistake of painting some in the wrong shade and it bugged me for a couple years until I changed it. The primer color makes a difference too like LT7A said.

83GMCK2500, I see that you hail from both Washington and Oregon. Wesco Auto Paints ought to be able to mix you a couple of cans of Frost White to match the factory color. Not super cheap, but quick.

Thank you for the recommendation. They have a Portland location, not far from me and not in the middle of the trash.

Aside from GM 12, there is also a code 11 white.
