best way to fill the trim holes??
 

Hey guys what is the best way to fill in the 30 or so trim holes?

Buddy says weld pennys behind and fill the hole in with the weld and grin smooth? Sounds :uhmk:crazy?

It takes some practice but you can fill the holes with weld from the outside provided they aren't too big (I've never tried one more than about 3/8") - just start on one edge and push the weld across. Grind - carefully - after it cools a little. 80-grit flap disk works great.
I've found the welding works much better for me in quick, short bursts using solid wire and argon/CO2 gas

All I have is wire with 120V welder. Should I cut little pieces of metal?

My Lincoln's 120v and I use .023 solid wire; is yours fluxcore (shielded) wire only - can you add gas?
I've read on here guys have welded very thin sheetmetal with shielded, heavier gauge wire, like .030-.035, but for me it was very messy, tends to make bigger holes - that seems more useful for heavier-gauge structural stuff.
You could also try holding or clamping copper/aluminum backing behind the holds

I've recently been having good luck with cutting little pieces of metal, the philosophy being less weld will have less heat and less warping. Takes some time, but not too bad.

If you back up the holes with some copper plate you can puddle a weld over the hole then smooth off the bump either a flappy wheel or rolloc, my choice is a cutoff wheel slowly and carefully. Its much more controllable and easier to see exactly where you are in the process. just dont bind the disc or put much pressure sideways. This process has served me well in years past.

If there is access to the back side of the hole, you can permanently close the holes with JB Weld. I’ve been doing it since the 1970’s and never had a failure. Here’s a thread on how I do it:

If you hold a penny behind the hole make sure there is no way for the wire to get past it. I had a hot piece of wire burn through my glove and go into the end of my finger 3/4". That was a good time.

I read on here about using a steel nail ,weld the head in and grind the rest off

I have done this just make sure you use common nails and not sinkers(coated nails) .It worked great for me ! not too much heat and when tacked simply cut the shaft of the nail and you are good to go! cheers, Pat

That's how I found this thread, marks jbweld thread, and many others.

I like marks jbweld suggestion, but I think my favorite suggestion is to use a nail head and weld it in, then grind it down.

The easiest way to fill the holes is to use panel bond to fill them. You can use a penny as a backer inside the panel. Works pretty slick this way, and goes a heck of a lot faster, too. Panel bond also works well for filling cab seams and such, too.

I've done the nail idea. It works and gives you something to hold onto without burning a damn hole through your finger! DON'T ASK!

Filler does not like to stick to it and due to the metals expanding and contracting is what I think happens.

I found the best way to fill the holes is by using the stock trim. :D
