I'm enjoying your diagnostics. You should send these photos to Zefal and show them what a precision instrument their tire pump turned out to be. They would probably be impressed. Or tell you that your warranty was void.

I'm hoping you find something that is easy to fix, or that you had just managed to work out an air pocket. Good luck man.

One of the pressure tests I typically do is to pressurize the system and run the engine. If the needle doesn't fluctuate or drop like a rock I don't usually have a problem.
You can get cooling system pressure testers from AutoZone's loaner tools.

10PSI is a little low for the radiator cap. They are usually rated for 14-16PSI. Every PSI drop is @ 4.333333°F lower boiling point.
Pure water boils at 228°F at 10PSI vs 254°F at 16PSI. 50:50 Coolant:Water will raise the boiling point around 10°F.

Thanks HATZIE so could i be loosing coolant via the radiator cap in the form of vapor on the account of it releasing pressure too early at 10 PSI rather than 15 PSI?

It's possible. If you don't have a catch-can/overflow-bottle or the bottle is smaller than the overflow volume you're likely just blowing it out on the road.

Never heard of them before a few weeks ago. They had a booth set up at Goodguys in Ft Worth. They had hats and t's for $10 each. Since that's about the same price as a bottle of water at GG's, I bought one of each.

well it's been 24 hours and the pressurized engine (block, heads, and intake manifold) are still holding 10 PSI, so I am going to order that new Northern aluminum radiator this week after I get paid, and we'll change one thing at a time till we find the source

If the Aluminum radiator is a good idea today it's still going to be a good idea in a couple days...
Try changing the cap to a Delco 10409635 (RC27) or STANT 10230 rated at 16PSI.
The fill neck could be borked but I'd replace the cap first. It's cheap and you can always order the Aluminum radiator on Tuesday or Wednesday if you still want it.

so my plastic [ahem] PVC Mityvac MV4560 coolying system pressure test kit arrived from Amazon today, they deliver on Sunday's who knew?!

so the first thing I did was test the radiator cap, and it holds 15 PSI easy, no leaks, hmmm

this seems like a pretty nice cheap kit for an amateur, I'm sure the metal one would be better for a many uses, but for a one time deal, it does fine

alright I just put a 7 PSI pressure test on the engine (heads, block, intake) chose 7 just cause it's a bear to pump that little guy up, plus 7 is in the geeen zone, so we'll see if it holds

Thank you, unfortunately I called them up and it comes with the transmission cooler inlet and outlet and I have a manual transmission and don't want those for a cleaner look, anal/silly I know, and they want $80 bucks additional to replace that plate

Thank, you I love my two wheel drive short bed, hope you get a good one, they are fantastic to wrench on, plenty of space to get in to everything, I would say they are like playing with Legos but it's more like Duplos, ha ha

My last project was a Miata, surprisingly easy to wrench on given the size, but I'm looking forward to V8 power again. I'll post pics in about 24 hours.

I have the same Wideband you do in the Miata. Super useful.

so glad you brought that up, strength in numbers, I hope more and more guys with old trucks like on this forum realize the potential of these AFR gauges as they come down in price and take their tuning to a whole new level for both fuel economy and performance

I tend to put turbochargers on everything I own, so they aren't even optional, but honestly i can see a huge amount of value even without forced induction, particularly with a carburetor. If I were staying with a carb it would likely be the very first thing I did.

Pricy but very worth it. They don't loosen up by extruding the hose through the worm slots.
Breeze Liner worm clamps will accomplish the same thing but they are around the same price and don't look near as nice.

well after two years of fast at it looks like the Greg may finally be slowing down, the replacement water temp gauge arrived yesterday and I took a nap instead of installing it right quick, ha ha, that or it's hibernation season

I give you the world's dumbest invention, radiator hose lube, this is excellent if you want your hoses to slip off the inlet or outlet tubes no matter how tight you make the hose clamps

you can find these right next to blinker fluid at your local parts house

I actually use a very very thin layer of Sil-Glyde Synthetic Silicone grease on the coolant hoses on everything I work on.
When the bead on the tube and fitting ends is properly formed and the clamps are sufficient for the task it causes ZERO problems and the hoses don't end up bonded to the fittings.

If that stuff is petroleum based you will have issues.
