12 V for Gauge lights

Hey there guys, do any of you have a diagram or a picture of which cable under the dash gives 12v only when the day lights / head lights are on ? I want to hook up the lights on my Tach and Temp gauge. Thanks!

Next to the panel lamp fuse is an open port you can tap into, if it is taken the 20 ga. gray wire at the heater lamp is another source.

The best way to test those ports is just check with the volt reader with the head lights off, then on to see which gives 12v with them on?

Used the grey wire at the header lamp , works great. Thanks!

Now a question. is it safe to wire it like I did...my really professional artistic rendering. Now this is only throwing out 12V when the head lights are on, and its only powering the lights on these gauges and the temp bulb.

I'm going to something similar on my 72.

My plan is to take the 20 ga. grey heater lamp wire to activate a relay. Then I'll have plenty of juice to feed my aftermarket triple gauges (3 bulbs) plus a couple LED accent lights, and the heater control lamp. My aftermarket Tach light bulb I will wire to the PNL LTS tab in the fuse box, since it's right down the column.

I like the idea of the relay for "lights on" for two reasons. It will provide full 12 volts to the many extra lighted accessories. And, it will reduce the stress and draw through the headlight switch and light duty wiring.

Re: 12 V for Gauge lights

I installed a volt meter under the dash on my Burb, and found it to be hard to read even in the daytime. So I just fed the gauge light from the ignition wire that went to the gauge. Now the gauge is nice and bright during the daytime when there's a dark shadow under the dash.
