I hope to git these round port aluminum Mr. Casket ones Part # 7402G (G is for custom made for Greg I think) which I already owned once, but like a fool returned |
Re: Restoring Rusty
Yeah I saw those and wondered if you were going to use them or those never have to retorque ones.

so the Mr. Gasket 7402G rode home shot gun with me, no seriously in the front seat
$38 bucks, pretty pricey, hewk at this rate I'm building a million dollar exhaust |
Re: Restoring Rusty

so lets take a closer gander at this be all end all gasket cause it sure wasn't what I expected, it comes off as a nice 1/8th of an inch gasket, or at least that's how it looks like in the box, well until you open it and flip it over
what's up with these ridges? hey man, I'm just sayin' and I'm just sharin', cause sharin' is carin' |
Re: Restoring Rusty
4 Attachment(s)
well lets try these on for size
first in non of the 17 languages on the box does Mr. Casket tell us which way is front and which way is back, in other words which side goes to the cylinder head and which one to the header I guess the ridges are supposed to wrap around some header, but good luck finding a header that matches the gasket exactly precisely |
Re: Restoring Rusty
2 Attachment(s)
two more pics of the ends
Wonder if I should flatten out that ridge around the border on the gasket or leave it be so the gasket lays flat on the header? |
Re: Restoring Rusty
well dingle dangle, Miss Easy On The Eyes shows us how to install these types of exhaust gaskets in this here YouTube video

what in the world is that? would that explain my coolant always being low?

my push rod numbering system
left to right 1 medium zip tie 2 medium zip ties 3 medium zip ties 0 medium zip ties 4 small zip ties (ah snap I forgot the zip ties on this little rascal) 3 small zip ties 2 small zip ties 1 small zip tie |
Re: Restoring Rusty

Off with Rusty's head!
something is definately up with the two middle cylinders (for sure #5 ie second from the right with all that build up) |
Re: Restoring Rusty
3 Attachment(s)
the jugs look fine ie cylinders and piston tops at least from what we can see here
|
Re: Restoring Rusty
2 Attachment(s)
looks like the head gasket held just fine (here we check out both sides of the same gasket)
|
Re: Restoring Rusty
3 Attachment(s)
here I show you my one man piston catching aparatus, don't worry it never came to that, the towel was there just in case, I tapped them out gently to where only the rings were crowning out
|
Re: Restoring Rusty
4 Attachment(s)
the first piston to come out was #5 and right away I noticed a problem, the oil rings were frozen / stuck, they would not spin nor wiggle
I marked this guy with a zip tie because I did not a have a number punch yet |
Re: Restoring Rusty
3 Attachment(s)
so I decided to compare it to the number 1 piston
I lined up the ring slots on purpose for the pic so you can see the spacing, they were properly offset in the engine notice how further apart the oil rings are on the #1 piston than the #5 (last pic) which are jammed closer together squeezing the piston to the point where they can't move |
Re: Restoring Rusty
4 Attachment(s)
decided to hit Harbor Freight for a stamping set before pulling any more pistons, didn't want to mix them up, as they were not numbered/labeled already
|
Re: Restoring Rusty
5 Attachment(s)
so I pulled all four pistons from the driver side and stamped there with their numbers
|
Re: Restoring Rusty
4 Attachment(s)
I also picked up what I thought was a bore gauge set from Harbor Freight, and folks don't waste your money this is total junk, I was unable to find the center ie the widest point of the cylinder this thing wobbles all over and by the time to lock it down you are in a different spot
|
Re: Restoring Rusty

cleaned my second work bench, this one is on the passenger side, i really like these benches, come in so handy, and a clean workbench keeps me sane
so the driver side head etc. went on the drive side workbench, and the passenger side components will go on this side |
Re: Restoring Rusty
1 Attachment(s)
this is what happens when you don't label your push rods, ha ha
at this point I didn't care |
Re: Restoring Rusty
3 Attachment(s)
pulled the passenger side cylinder head
no surprises here - things looked normal |
Re: Restoring Rusty
3 Attachment(s)
passenger head looked better
|
Re: Restoring Rusty
2 Attachment(s)
passenger head gasket was in good order, front and back shown here
|
Re: Restoring Rusty
5 Attachment(s)
and all the pistons out of the passenger side as well, and numbered
I realize I'm stamping them on the bottom part that comes off but I don't plan on having more than one apart at a time |
Re: Restoring Rusty

tried to take a picture of the part number on one of the pistons, 6271096 I think it was so stock size 4"

before and after honing pics
the mirror like finish is actually what you don't want when putting in new rings, you want it to be dull(ish) like the second pic |

Re: Restoring Rusty

yes I did get a ton done in one day, I wrapped things up late at night by de-ringing the pistons, and oh boy did I find two problems
but first the good side, the passenger side, all de-ringed |
Re: Restoring Rusty
2 Attachment(s)
things got a bit more interesting on the driver's side
two oil rings were broken, can you guess which two? remember the two middle chambers in that head #3 #5 |
