Turn signals not cancelling
 

Hi
I have a '71 c10. non tilt, and the turn signals do not cancel. Looks like the white plastic operating arm has been replaced but the problem is the arm has a 1/8" gap from the cancelling cam when in the on position. I am unsure if the replaced part is complete and the correct one for my truck can any one confirm this. Also if I need a new part is it available seperate to the switch assembley.

You are missing the cancelling springs. When the tab hits those it shoves the turn signal arm back.

Hi Alex, Thanks for the info. its appreciated. Do you know if the springs are available or have I got to buy a new Actuating cam. I can't imagine why the p.o. didn't fit the springs

They may not have known about the springs. (They will break over time as well, but you will usually find parts of them hanging on).

You can buy them individually, I think rockauto may have them as well. Those springs are used in just about every GM vehicle (lets say 1969 to 1987) so you may be able to source them locally from someone who may sell restoration parts for whatever GM American car is popular in the UK.

I have seen those springs sold separately in the HELP! section at O'Reilly's Item # 49312 not sure if you have one in U.K.? but i think all auto parts stores have a HELP! section.

Both sites say not compatable for a '71 C10.
At that price I'll take a chance.

On Dorman's website it shows them fitting 1967 to 1999 GM's and the cam in your picture looks almost identical to my 76 so they should work.

Thanks for the conformation, I'll get a family member in VA. to mail me some. I am surprised that I can't find them listed in either Ecklers or LMC truck catalogs. So local factors it is.

Thing is with a lot of these little parts, you need to look at other models that tend to get over-restored. Camaro catalogs are another good source for little bits that is used cross platform, but not necessarily listed for other platforms. I have a Nova, lots of little bits are the same as on a Camaro, but the catalogs only have the parts listed for the Camaro but not in their Nova catalogs. Thats why I suggested a local UK shop that caters to "popular" American Cars.

Different Price. Same part functionally and interchangably (they may actually source from two different places though, somebody is not doing a complete cross checking of parts. Might change if they pay attention to search terms used, and hits from links to specific parts. I see they also list the part for Camaro, but not Firebird).
And El Camino they list separate left and right spring at a buck 99 each, but not a pair.

Things that make you go hmmmm.... I also think this is the first time I have seen a "corvette" part cheaper. And if it is marketing driving pricing levels, El Camino guys must be easier to get a few more bucks out of.

Regarding the parts look-up headaches. When I go to the parts counter searching for some obscure part, I go straight to the oldest guy with the grey hair who's looking in a big old fat parts book instead of the young kid punching numbers into the computer. That old guy has forgotten more than that kid can find on his computer. When all those old, grey haired guys retire, searching for those obscure parts, will become even more frustrating.

Just my thoughts. :(
