Roller cam question
Hey guys,
I'm in the process of building a roller cam engine for my lwb 70 c10. The foundation will be a freshly machined oe roller, 2 bolt main, .030 over 355 (638 block). I don't have numbers on deck height right now, it is still at the shop. But for conversations, we'll say stock deck height right now. The idea is to build a strong little engine that has very strong torque numbers and reasonable hp numbers. I do not plan to take the truck to track but just want a hot little street engine that has a good sound and works well with the truck. I'm running a th350 with 3.73 rear gears. I have a balanced rotating assembly, with hypereutectic +7 cc pistons and stock rod length. I would like to use a set of 062 vortec heads that I already have (just needs to be set up for the chosen roller cam). Long story short, I was looking at the xr270hr from comp (218/224, .495/.502 if I remember correctly with 1.5 rockers). Do you guys think this is a good cam for the set up, especially with vortecs? Again, the overall idea is strong bottom torque more so than top horsepower, but good hp numbers are a bonus. I do plan to get on it from time to time, but I want to make sure it will work well with the heavy truck and 3.73 gearing. Thank you all for the feedback. |

Actually that would be a great cam for the vortex heads. Just remember to machine down the valve guides for retainer clearance.

You have a light truck and high gearing, torque won't be a problem.
That's a great cam with vortecs as the intake port stalls at .500" lift, so no point in going over that until you get back to .600" or more lift [which nobody should be doing with vortec really lol] |

I think that is a great cam for your motor/application as well. Look into a 1800-2000 rpm converter. We went that route with my teenagers Jimmy (mild 350, 204/214 cam 3.73 and 35" tire) and the additional stall is great for idle and reducing clunk into gear as well as getting off the line.

I would contact comp cams and varify what valve springs to use to insure no valve bind

I’ve actually been looking at this cam for my the 350 I’m currently building for my K20. I’ve got a vortec 350 roller block, stock deck, bore, stroke, and pistons, speed master aluminum 190cc runner, 64cc chamber heads; should be about 9.5:1, 4:11 gears and a sm465. I’m thinking this cam should do pretty well in that combo, but not too rowdy. I’d love to see how you like it if you end up with this cam.

i have looked at several cams for this build. ive looked at some a step up, and some a step down, even different companies. however, i keep coming back to the XR270 for this 355 with vortecs. once i know my block checks out, im going to go ahead and get it. we'll see how it turns out!
