painting over 5 year old epoxy

5 years ago did the bodywork on my Suburban doors and painted them with Nason epoxy primer. For finishing it off all it should need is a coat of 2K primer and some blocking. How should the Nason epoxy be prepped for recoating. It's been 5 years since these were last worked on. I know the 5 year old epoxy has to be sanded or scuffed but with what grit? Also should it get a fresh coat of epoxy before applying the 2K? Lately I've been using SPI epoxy and 2K.

I would block the Nason with 180 and then a coat of SPI epoxy. Wait 48 hours and then spray your 2K.

SPI recommends sanding then recoating with epoxy if it's been on there that long.

Epoxy has a recoat window . After that time you have to sand no matter what you put on over it.

Sinces your epoxy primer is 5 years old it's possible there may be rust under it

Epoxy primers that use zinc phosphate as an anti-corrosion device are sacrificial. Knock it down with 180, you'll probably go down to bare metal in certain spots, apply at least two coats of your anti-corrosive epoxy and follow it up with your surfacing epoxy and you should be good to go
