07 avalanche p0302 code driving me nuts...

hey guys, i bought a 07 avalanche, 5.3L 2wd. it has a p0302 code and I cant seem to get it to go away.

what I've done so far...
Plugs
Wires
Coils
Injectors
Smoke test (found a broken pcv pipe on the drivers rear of engine...repaired)

it does have a little miss at idle, my next recourse will be compression test on the cylinders and look at the cats.

I pulled live data today with my scanner but don't see anything here is a readout sample, tell me if you see anything in the data.
Thanks in advance!

With the data provided, was the idle data after you drove it and came back to the house? You have an fuel open loop (OL) fault. Now if you do a cold start, it will be in open loop until it warms up. No problems there. However, if you go from open loop to closed loop and back to open loop, and you have a continuous misfire, the PCM is saying it’s having a hard time trying to control fuel and spark so it goes into open loop fault. You have to get to the bottom of this misfire.

Many times it’s a spark issues, but not always. Since you replaced the coil and plugs, double check the connectors and loose wires at the connector. Also check the fuel injector clip and make sure it’s actually seated on the injector. Loose connectors will affect injector operation. This is a cylinder #2 issue so concentrate there. From the looks of it, this is an intermittent issue and will take some patience to find the fault. But the good news is that you know it’s cylinder #2.

I honestly don’t think it’s a cat issue because it would be more of a p0300 code and not specific to a cylinder.

Yes the second set of data was "DTC triggered" so it only started recording after the fault occurred.

Have you tried doing a compression test?

Sorry it's been a minute..... no doing a compression test this weekend. Someone suggested a cam phaser? Something about variable valve timing. This avalanche does have the cylinder drop out for eco mode.

Ok, so did a compression test.
#1) 175 psi. #2) 165 psi
#3) 180 psi. #4) 185 psi
#5) 185 psi. #6) 190 psi
#7) 180 psi. #8) 180 psi

So clearly #2 is low, where should I look? Valves? Rings?
I'm screwed, I need to get this thing transferred into my name and it's not gonna pass smog.

You can squirt a small amount of oil in #2 cylinder with the spark plug removed. Spin the engine over and see if your compression shows a increase. if it does, then its most likely ring related.

I would guess its carboned rings. If so, buy the GM top end cleaner, pour some in each cylinder and let sit overnight. spin the engine over the next day with the spark plugs out to clear the fluid. Install the spark plugs and go drive the truck to clear out the residue.

Thanks, I will give that a try.
